Product Description

In this children's picture book, President Thomas S. Monson recounts a Christmas memory from his childhood. As a boy, he yearned for an electric train. To his delight, on Christmas morning he got exactly that—a train that operated through the miracle of electricity. Then he noticed a second train that his mother had purchased for the boy down the street whose family was struggling. Although it was only a wind-up train, it had a beautiful oil tanker car, which little Tommy wanted for his own. Soon after, Tommy's mother invited him to accompany her to the neighbor's home to deliver the gift. Young Mark was thrilled with his new train and, of course, didn't notice the missing train car. However, a remorseful Tommy did. What happened next will bring the spirit of Christmas into every heart and home. Illustrated by renowned artist Dan Burr, The Christmas Train is sure to be a classic Christmas story and a beautiful addition to every Christmas library.

About the Authors

President Thomas S. Monson was set apart as the sixteenth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in February 2008. He had previously served for twenty-two years in the First Presidency of the Church, after having been a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since October1963. Five years after his call to the Twelve, he was given a special assignment for the work of the Church in Europe, requiring many visits with members behind the Iron Curtain. He also served as chairman of the Scriptures Publication Committee and supervised the process that resulted in the new editions of the scriptures. His ministry has been characterized by his compassion for the needs of individuals and his gift for one-on-one service. President Monson and his wife, Frances, are the parents of three children, grandparents of eight, and great-grandparents of eight.

Dan Burr earned his bachelor of fine arts degree from Utah State University and a master’s degree in illustration from Syracuse University. He and his wife, Patti, are raising their two children in the Teton Valley of southeast Idaho, a setting that provides great artistic inspiration and fantastic fly fishing. Dan is a well-known illustrator, having been in the business for many years, most recently working as a children’s picture book illustrator. A few of the books Dan has illustrated are The Miracle of the Wooden Shoes; God Bless Your Way; A Christmas Journey; and I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.

A great story!

by Stephanie - reviewed on December 03, 2012

When Tommy was a boy he dearly wanted a train. Not just any kind of train, but an electric train that would chug independently around its little track. On Christmas morning Tommy was delighted to receive just that! His kindhearted mother had purchased a second train to give to Mark, another boy who lived down the street who's mother could not afford presents that year. Of course, Mark's train was just a small windup train but Tommy eyed a oil-tanker car jealously in Marks set. "If you need it more than Mark, you may take it..." his Mother had said. So he did.... Later, when Tommy accompanied his mother on the delivery of the wind-up train Tommy felt remorse over the missing oil tanker car. Of course, Mark didn't know there was a missing car, but Tommy did. What happens next will touch your heart and help even the littlest listeners & readers understand that Christmas is about much more that getting...it is about giving. Knowing that even our beloved prophet suffered jealousy and selfishness really allows us to view President Monson as a real person, not just any person...even a little boy. I adored this story and I am thrilled to add it as a new annual Christmas story during our advent season. My heart feels so soft and giving after reading this wonderful, true story about our prophet.

New Christmas Favorite

by Erin - reviewed on January 02, 2013

Every year we add a few new books to our Christmas collection. This book was the favorite this year. It made it even more special being a true story about our dear prophet as a child. My kids loved this book, especially my 4 year old. I read this book many times this season. A story about giving, and the true meaning of Christmas. 5 stars.

Great Christmas Tale

by linda - reviewed on December 18, 2012

I just bought the Ipad app version. I personally was touched by the story. Furthermore, the simple interactive features on this version would mean young children would come back to it time and again as I have several other such story books on my iPad but they are not faith-based. It's such a bonus to have it narrated by President Monson. I have already bought a second copy as a gift for a friend's family. Thank you.

Sweet TRUE Story

by Shauna - reviewed on November 26, 2012

This is such a sweet, true story! When President Monson was a little boy he was given an electric train set for Christmas... Along with that train his mother purchased a wind-up train set for a neighbor boy... When the young Tommy saw the one car in the wind-up set that he really wanted his mother allows him to keep it... Not to give the ending away...let's just say... President Monson learned a very valuable lesson on "service" and "reaching out to the one" during that Christmas season. An added bonus: With this book you get a CD with President Monson reading to you. Using an interactive iPad App -- President Monson will read the book to you AND you can make the tree light up, the train move and watch young Tommy run back to his house, etc.

Loved

by Emilee - reviewed on October 11, 2012

I absolutely love President Monson's stories especially those of his childhood. This picture book is a wonderful keepsake of one of Monson's precious stories. The illustrations by Dan Burr were amazing as well. He portrayed young Tommy, his mom and friend well. I did have a different ending in mind but Monson chose the right direction to go. He is a wonderful example of loyalty, honesty and friendship. This book will bring the spirit of Christmas into your heart and home. I definitely recommend this book for young or old.
