Product Description

Christmas Eve, 1941. Mere days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt met at the White House. As war raged throughout the world, the two leaders delivered a powerful message of hope that still resonates today.

Bestselling author and renowned historian David McCullough relates a compelling story about the spirit of Christmas and the power of light to shine in difficult, dangerous times. Also sharing the stories behind the songs "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas," this beautifully designed book is filled with historic photographs and uplifting messages that will bring the Christmas spirit home to your family.

In the Dark Streets Shineth also includes a DVD of David McCullough's presentation of this story at the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's 2009 Christmas concert.

Sweet Book

by DeAnn - reviewed on October 22, 2010

This is a sweet book. I was not around in 1941 but because of my parents I heard many stories from this era. It was very interesting to read the speeches given by the President and Winston Churchill during a very uncertain time. The pictures were a nice touch too. I read the book before putting on the DVD -- and I have to say that after watching the DVD I wanted to go back and look at the pictures again in the book. The DVD is a fun addition.

The book by itself is great, but add the DVD and you have an amazing experience.

an excellent addition to your library

by Customer - reviewed on October 15, 2010

I was expecting more of an actual story, and was a bit disappointed to hear that it only takes about 15 mins. to read. But this is an amazing book. Such a powerful message and story. I was near tears when I learned the story behind the song "I'll Be Home For Christmas". It's a great book to share with friends and family.

This book is a compelling, quick read with an inspiring message of hope that would make a wonderful gift for anyone this holiday season! Reading the Christmas messages of two very prominent men from history during rough times not only in the U.S, but around the world was really quite interesting! David McCullough did a great job as he usually does!
