Product Description

President Packer has had a lifelong love of nature and art. He has developed a deep appreciation for the beauties of nature and an understanding of the laws that govern the natural world. Animals, especially birds, have been the primary theme of his artwork. The whole collection consists of nearly 600 original carvings, paintings, sketches, and drawing, many of which illustrate this book.

His artistic passion has become entwined with his love of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through the years, he has often used his art to illustrate gospel principles. One of his key teachings is that there is agreement and harmony between natural and spiritual laws and that nature bears witness of the divine creation.

The companion DVD features President and Sister Packer describing the artwork and telling some of life's lessons learned along the way. Originally recorded as a keepsake for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, it now becomes a treasure for admirers of his work. While the photographs in this book provide a beautiful view of his artwork, the video recording shows the amazing precision and intricate detail.

About the Author

Boyd Kenneth Packer was the tenth of eleven children born to Ira and Emma Packer in Brigham City, Utah. After graduating from high school, he served as a pilot in the US Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1946. He served in the Pacific theater of World War II.

After the military, he attended Weber College (now Weber State University), where he met his wife, Donna (Smith). They married in the Logan Utah Temple in 1947 and had ten children. After their marriage, he attended Utah State University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and later an EdD from Brigham Young University.

He has served as a General Authority of the Church since 1961 and an Apostle and member of the Quorum of the Twelve since April 1970. He served as Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve from 1994 to 2008 and was made President in January 2009.

In addition to his natural gift to teach, he was blessed with a remarkable gift as an artist. President Packer’s artistic bent and love of nature are as integrally a part of him as his spirituality, compassion, steadiness, and humor.

A Treasure

by Katie - reviewed on May 03, 2012

This book is filled with stories and experiences from President Packer's life and his teachings. The artwork is beautiful and I loved the lessons taught by his talents--in word and art. I loved watching his talents grow throughout his life. I do have to say the book's outside cover is kind of flimsy and has already started to bow. I hope future printings will be of better quality.

Learning About President Packer's Talent

by Customer - reviewed on June 05, 2012

I received this book as a gift and it is really beautiful. I honestly had no idea about President Packer's talents as an artist, so seeing his different pieces in this book has been interesting. The photograph that I've enjoyed most is of a fireplace mantle that he carved. It's really pretty amazing. This book is a nice way to learn about a different side of President Packer than what we normally see at General Conference!
