    More "spirited" than Spiritual!

by  Dave  -   reviewed on  October 13, 2011

Wow! This gal can play! Great “musical chops.” A very accomplished pianist. However, I found this CD to be more “spirited” than “spiritual.” These arrangements, while beautifully performed, are quite aggressive in nature, rather than the placid, calming, or soothing style I would normally associate with the Sabbath. Many of the arrangements are given a recurring, or similarly formulaic treatment of including one verse in the “obligatory” minor key. Hansen also repeatedly uses the full width and breadth of the piano keyboard to demonstrate her piano prowess. I guess I had been hoping for some music similar to the styles of Kurt Bestor, Jason Tonioli, Jim Brickman or David Lanz, which would be more introspective or reflective in nature. Instead, most of the tracks came across with the flair and showmanship of Liberace! I was hoping for something more subtle and soothing: more representative of Debussy. Instead, the music felt more dynamic and majestic, as in the style of Wagner. Don’t misunderstand. This music is very impressive. And I am pleased to have the CD in my collection LDS inspired instrumental music. It was just dramatically different than I expected. I will simply choose to listen to it on another day of the week, as it is a little too aggressive for my preferred listening on Sunday.

    Absolutely Amazing!

The first time I heard Amy Hansen's debut album, "Piano Noel Classics," I honestly could not hold back the tears. I was equally impressed and touched with her new album, "Fount of Every Blessing." Her unique arrangements of classic Hymns sheds new light on their meaning and depth. I love her music and look forward to hear more!
