This painting of gorgeous Old Jerusalem is depicted in its modern-day setting. This view is from the hills of Jerusalem which are covered with the lilies of the field or red poppies which grow wild all over Israel. This beautiful ancient city and the surrounding hills are where our Savior walked, lived and taught. It stands as a reminder that we must remember Christ’s example and life and constantly renew our efforts to follow Him. We must also continually look forward with faith to his return and watch diligently for the prophecies to unfold. “The Gate Beautiful” is known as the Gate of Forgiveness or Mercy. A small stroke of the only white paint on the whole image approaching the gate beautiful is a figure of the Messiah, our Savior. This symbolizes the second coming of the Savior in His purity, glory and perfection. This small figure in the painting must be diligently looked for just as we must anxiously look for the signs of His coming for we are told He will come as a thief in the night. All over the world many wait in anticipation or fear for that “Great and Terrible Day” of His coming. The Gate Beautiful was sealed by the Turks to dissuade the Savior from entering but will provide no obstacle for the Messiah at his Second Coming. Olive trees in the foreground represent the gathering of the elect from around the world and the oil they produce symbolizes that the bitter will be made sweet. Sunlight tones reflect on the gate beautiful and the Dome of the Rock in Old Jerusalem. This beautiful city and land stand as a testament of His life. Christ does live and He will come again.
