Product Description

In the time before Creation, before so many of the children of God turned away from their Father and walked knowingly into the dark, there was a choosing, a sifting, a contest of ideas and a battle for souls. In that great premortal war, each of us learned the first lessons of life: The great ones may fall. The wicked can change. The weak and the foolish can become the strongest of all. And the battle between good and evil is the same regardless of the time or place.

The Brothers is the first novel in a new series by national bestselling author Chris Stewart. The Great and Terrible takes us from the beginning of time to the final hours of the last days, revealing the greatest secret of all: The children of God can defeat the adversary, for we have fought him before.

Surprisingly Inspiring

by Daniel - reviewed on January 13, 2006

I must say, as an avid reader of many 'last days' themed books, I was a little skeptical about this series starting off in the pre-existence. I thought it might borderline on the inappropriate. I was wrong. This book was very inspiring in its view of mortality. Stewart is usually a very strong writer, but this book is kept simple. My guess is that he does not want people to take this as doctrine - which can be easy to do when something is put to print. At any rate, the book is a great lead-in to what is proving to be a fascinating storyline. The only reason I give this 4 stars is because of the book's simplicity. It could've been 5.

Enlightening!

by Linda - reviewed on November 09, 2006

I am currently reading book 3 of the series. These stories really opened my eyes and put a more realistic perspective on the ability Satan has to alter daily events. The stories make you wonder how many sinister plots he has in store and the people involved. Is it within our own country or some foreign entity? These stories may help individuals realize that we really are in the last days and the importance of keeping our lives in order to be able to discern the difference between the promptings of the Spirit and the enticements of the adversary.

The Best Series

by Cami - reviewed on October 29, 2008

A must read for every reader. Chris Stewart makes this series so realistic just like the way it may have happened all the way through how it could happen. This series has opened my eyes to really being prepared for the unknown.

An eye opening novel

by Natalie - reviewed on February 27, 2004

I was very hestiant when I found out that this book dealt with the pre-exsitance but what a powerful book. After reading this book I came to understand the roles that we played in the premortal world and how the battle that we fought there has not ended. Even today we fight with Satan to save our selfs and our family and friends. This is a must read for everyone! I am looking forward to the second volume in this series.

Weakest Book in series

by Customer - reviewed on January 24, 2009

It's a good thing I started this series with book two, then went back to this one. The series is fantastic, but I never would have read the rest of the series if I'd read this volume first. It just doesn't measure up to the strong volumes that follow.

A Great Pre-Existence Thriller!!!!

by Teri - reviewed on January 05, 2009

Prologue: The Brothers Vol. I The Great and Terrible: by Chris Stewart I had heard of this book when it first came out, but it wasn't until the last one came out that I needed to see what all the excitement was. This first in a series is totally amazing, and Chris is a master story teller in weaving the story of the war in heaven. This novel simply tells the story of Ammon, Luke, Sam and their younger sister Elizabeth and their fighting to save their brothers, who are undecided on the choices they make, as their choices will set their destiny. I was amazed at how spiritual this story was and Chris makes you really think about our pre-mortal days and how it can impact our mortal lives. Even though this is a quick read, the eternal perspectives are mind-boggling!!!! If you haven't read this nail-biter (I don't bite them anymore) do read it.

Disappointed

by Customer - reviewed on February 17, 2009

I had great hopes in the Great and Terrible series, but was very disappointed in Vol. 1. The story descriptions weren't believable to me, and the characters were too one-dimensional. I feel like some LDS writers are held to a lower standard because there is such a demand for LDS literature. I will buy Vol. 2 and continue the story because the teaser chapter at the end of Vol. 1 sounded much more interesting than the book I had just finished. I continue to long for really great fiction, written by LDS writers - or by any writer who can write a great, descriptive story without resorting to the vulgarities that seem to sell books these days.

Not very original

by Daniel - reviewed on September 30, 2004

Not very original. Simplistice view of the pre-life. It really just builds on the same genre of 'Added Upon,' 'Saturday's Warrior,' etc.

WHEN is Volume 2 coming?????

by Julie - reviewed on May 31, 2004

I have found myself mentally and spiritually referring to this book's lessons and content, as I've gone about my daily life. Imagining myself and others in the roles of these characters has strengthened me against the subtle powers of the adversary! Every time I am tempted, I think of myself in the actions of this pre-existence, and 'remind' myself of the vital role I am here to play on this earth!!

Thought provoking

by Hillary - reviewed on January 29, 2004

Excellent book! Very thought-provoking and compelling. It sounded 'familiar' to me, almost as if I was reading an old journal. I love the way it has caused me to think differently about my mission on earth and has caused me to look at my husband and children in a different light. A great reminder that we conquered Satan and chose to follow Christ in the premortal life, and I know that I can do it again in this life!

Awesome and Powerful Book

by Hila - reviewed on June 04, 2004

This is an amazing book. As I was reading it, I thought, 'What would I do in this situation? Would I be fighting on the Lord's side? Or would I have been lured to Satan's side?' And then it ocurred to me... I already know what I would do, because I was there and I chose right, because I am here. The whole story was great, but the ending gave me goose-bumps and the best feeling inside. Can't wait for the next volume.

I am glad I started with Book One

by Fred - reviewed on February 04, 2009

I am glad I started with Book One. If I had started with Book 2, I might not have read the series, so far. (I am 1/2 way into book 6). Book one starts in the Pre-existence. It is a Prologue to the series, which wouldn't make much sense without it. It is well done. I have not been into political/military books. This series is an exception. Don't skip book one. Like life, it doesn't make any sense without it.

Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!

by Jarom - reviewed on January 06, 2006

Wonderful!! I am an avid reader of all genres and styles and Chris Stewart rates up there with the best of them. Intertwining such strong emotions with a captivating story seemed to come so easy for him. I can't wait to get the other books.

I can't believe he wanted me to take this seriously

by jake - reviewed on April 08, 2007

Wildly dissapointed. How does one get 'chilled to the bone' in the preexistence? And why is it raining in heaven every fourth page? It had a nice prologue and after that...Well, I laughed outloud several times by the pathetic dialogue, lack of plot, unreal characters. I love the idea, but LDS writers need to step it up. How did his editor rationalize this kind of writing? Don't waste your time.

This book will bring any LDS military member to tears!

by Mandy - reviewed on July 29, 2008

As a member of the Armed Forces for the last six years, and a patriot whose heart swells with pain and pride at the sacrifice of many of my fellow commrades, I related to this book on both a spiritual and temporal level. I was moved to tears at the end. This book was a gift from a family member, and upon finishing it I immediately went out to purchase all the other volumes of the series. If you are a military member and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints this book comes highly recommended.

A TRUELY INSPIRED WORK

by malia - reviewed on July 05, 2007

I loved this book!! It is truely inspirational. I could feel the reality in the plan of salvation and in Satans desire to bring our souls to damnation. It brought my purpose here on earth back into view and explained that the war didn't end in heaven but it is before us every second here on earth. The description of heaven and its beauty were brought to my imagination by this talented auther. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a reminder of who they are and why they are here.

Wow! Fantastic books!

by Customer - reviewed on May 18, 2009

These are amazing books! I was visiting my family in Utah and my sister told me I should read these books that she had borrowed from a friend. (She was on book two.) I had not really heard of them before, but quickly got enthralled. I thought there would be three or four books, but found out there were six. I read all six in about two weeks! I absolutely loved them! Now I will be getting them on cd so my family can listen to them on our way to Utah this summer. They are so amazing! They reminded me of who I am and why I am here.

Loved the series!

by Carol - reviewed on September 03, 2010

I loved the series and all my boys loved it too. At one time I had all of the books loaned out to either a friend or family member! If one of them was traveling they borrowed the cds. We were all waiting impatiently for the next one to be released. They are now in my family library and my husband and I are planning to start reading them once more!

This book was one of the best books I have ever read.

by Customer - reviewed on March 06, 2011

I had heard of this book from a friend who told me it was worth reading. He was right to the fullest. Though this is fiction, it keeps your interest and builds your testimony while reading it. I think that anyone who is able to should read this book!
