An organic, vibrant collection of hymns that brings out both the reverence and celebration of the hymns. Part vigil. Part revival.
The Lower Lights convened in fall 2009 for five days of recording. The goal was to dive into the hymns - familiar hymns, overlooked hymns, non-traditional hymns, and more - and connect with them on a deeper level. Drawing equal parts reverence and celebration from the rich well of the hymns, we ended up with 30-plus songs that felt part-revival, part-revival. And we ended up with more than just an album. We ended up with an experience.
Listen to the songs and suddenly you're there: a few people are in the studio hallway working out a candlelit arrangement to "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" while in the main studio no fewer than 15 people record a spirited version of "Israel, Israel, God Is Calling," making a choir out of anyone not holding an instrument. Somebody's flipping through an old hymnal. A couple of guys tune a marxophone with a wrench. Spontaneous hand-clapping breaks out. And another song is finished and crossed off the chalkboard.
Ye Elders of Israel
Come, Ye Children Of the Lord
Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me
Count Your Blessings
If You Could Hie to Kolob
Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy
Israel, Israel God Is Calling
The Lord Is My Shepherd
Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
We Thank Thee, O God, For a Prophet
For the Beauty of the Earth
There Is a Green Hill Far Away
Sweet Hour of Prayer

This compilation of hymns is amazing! I have listened to the cd non-stop since receiving it a few days ago. I've enjoyed the album so much, I've already gotten another to send as a gift to a family member. I love that the hymns are upbeat, yet still maintain their spiritual value. They are performed in a "revival" type way that can't help but pull you in, and the harmonies are beautiful! I would say if you enjoy bluegrass to any degree, you will LOVE this album! But, it is also a compilation that can be enjoyed by anyone looking to be uplifted by hymns. I am now eagerly awaiting another release from The Lower Lights. I want more!!
So Fresh and Beautiful!

I saw the group video on the BYU channel. I am not a fan of blue grass or "Country twang" but this group and the instruments and the vocalization is moving to the soul, so, so so, good. I will play it over and over and over. I hope to hear more and that they continue recording. I am 74 years old and if I like it most anyone has to like it. I can't say enough. I saw instruments on stage that I haven't seen or heard since I was a kid. A Zither!!! How great this sound is!!!
