Little Known Friends of the Prophet Joseph Smith

Before going to his martyrdom at Carthage, the Prophet Joseph Smith called the Nauvoo Legion together. While speaking to them from a large frame stand in front of the Mansion House, Joseph put his hand on the head of Levi W. Hancock, who was then acting as his bodyguard, and said:

“Brethren, the Lord Almighty has this day revealed to me something I never comprehended before; that I have thousands of friends who have, at a respectable distance, been ready to ward off the blows of the Adversary, while others have pretended to be friends and have crept into my bosom and become vipers and have been my most deadly enemies.”
