Preface from Mormon Doctrine

This work on Mormon Doctrine is designed to help persons seeking salvation to gain that knowledge of God and his laws without which they cannot hope for an inheritance in the celestial city.

Since it is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance of God and his laws, and since man is saved no faster than he gains knowledge of Jesus Christ and the plan of salvation, it follows that men are obligated at their peril to learn and apply the true doctrines of the gospel.

This gospel compendium will enable men, more effectively, to "teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom;" to "be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient" for them "to understand." (D. & C. 88:77-78.)

For the work itself, I assume sole and full responsibility.

Inspired writing by a true prophet, a man like Paul to our generation.

by  John W.  -   reviewed on  July 31, 2007

Along with THE ARTICLES OF FAITH by James E. Talmage this is one of the two or three best books ever written on the subject of Mormon doctrine. Highly controversial in some circles because of the author's opinionated writing style it is nevertheless so well grounded in the scriptures and the revelations of Joseph Smith that it inspires as well as the scriptures themselves. It is one of very few books of which the Holy Ghost has testified to me. Highly Recommended. I would give it six stars if I could.

very in depth reading.

by  Robert  -   reviewed on  September 23, 2008

This is a great book writen by one of God's Apostles. Elder McConkie is known for his doctrinal writings and his in depth view of the church and it's teachings. This book can be compared to an encyclopedia for the doctrines of the LDS Church. If you want to learn about a subject this book is the first place you should look, and then at its sited references. I would suggest this book to any one who loves to study the in depth doctrines of the church.

A Book that will be well read and well worn!

by  Noel  -   reviewed on  April 14, 2005

If permitted I would like to base my review on the original publication of 1958, duly signed personally by Bruce R. McConkie, when he was a member of The First Council of Seventy. I have found the volume over almost 50 years to have been a very valuable and faithful guide to my understanding of the Scriptures. I have been so impressed that I am looking forward to acquiring a new version as a wonderful gift for the future generation. It is alphabetical in layout, easy to follow, and fully furnished with all available scriptural/Standard Works references. I highly recommend Mormon Doctrine to young and old as a constant and ready guide to the Word of God.

A LDS keepsake written by a legendary scholar.

by  Jay  -   reviewed on  July 09, 2007

Mormon Doctrine is a tremendous resource for any member of the LDS faith. It can be a great resource for any gospel student that is serious about learning of the restored gospel. Elder McConkie is one of the few legendary scholars that the LDS church has produced and to regard his work as flawed simply because some topics have become 'politically incorrect' is a ridiculous assumption.

A must for every LDS library

by  Jill  -   reviewed on  September 11, 2008

I love this book! It has really helped me with basic understanding of principles the 12 years I have been a member of this church. I love to read it like a book--front to back-- learning so many things all the way through. It has also helped with an increased perspective and knowledge when I have had to teach lessons, give talks and study the gospel a little more. It's a must have in every LDS library!

Great book.

by  TJ  -   reviewed on  September 15, 2008

This is really great, but more of an encyclopedia than a "book." McConkie goes through each gospel topic and expounds his (vast) knowledge on each subject. A great thing to help you further your understanding of smaller gospel subjects.

Great!

by  Customer  -   reviewed on  October 17, 2008

I agree that is this is more encyclopedia like than book, but it is just the thing when there is a subject you are pondering and need to find answers to. Almost every time you will find it here, an invaluable resource.

I have recently purchased this book, and frequently find myself looking up subjects in the book in order to gain further insight. Very interesting material.

A Must Have

by  Christopher  -   reviewed on  July 25, 2009

It is true that this book is 40+ years old, but the gospel is the same today as it was 40 years ago. A great resource and a classic book. For $30 you can't go wrong with having the teachings of a special witness of Christ.

Sadly Out of Date

by  Matt  -   reviewed on  May 27, 2009

While I love Elder McConkie, this book is sadly out of date and doctrinally incorrect. It mistakenly teaches folklore about blacks and the priesthood that was later repudiated by Elder Oaks and Elder Holland, as well as by McConkie Himself. If you are looking for a better volume, I'd try the encyclopedia of Mormonism or True to the Faith, but this book is mainly a relic of history, and not in fact "Mormon Doctrine"

Full of superstition and folklore

by  j  -   reviewed on  May 28, 2009

It's a shame that this book with so many great things in it also contains folklore and subjects that are absolutely not doctrinal. The section on African Americans is horrible and has been refuted by Elder Oaks. It's a real shame this book hasn't been removed from the shelves of this fine bookstore. Mormon Doctrine is not doctrine at all but instead the views of one man.

Needs an update!

by  Customer  -   reviewed on  May 31, 2009

"Mormon Doctrine" is a great book, and powerfully explains many important doctrines of the Church. Unfortunately, the book shows its age (40+ years), and some of the opinions expressed on race seem to be artifacts from 1960's American culture, not "Mormon Doctrine". If this book is to continue to be sold to members of the Church, it's probably time to update it with our 2009 understanding of how God views race (and modern LDS doctrine on the future of polygamy in the millennium as well). As a window into one man's studied opinion on Mormon doctrine circa 1966, it's a useful book. As a definitive resource on the subject for 2009, it falls far short.

Sound Doctrine From An Apostle.

by  Linda  -   reviewed on  June 02, 2009

I love Elder McConkie's book Mormon Doctrine! He had such an encyclopedic knowledge of the scriptures that he was able to call upon in delineating LDS doctrine. The articles are very clear and concise. It makes a good reference to use for sacrament meeting talks or personal study. His beautiful and strong testimony of the savior comes through in his writing. This is a must have for every member's book shelf.

poorly titled

by  Beth   -   reviewed on  March 29, 2011

While this book is okay for some types of quick reference, it is NOT an authoritative source. Before quoting it I URGE you to follow the footnotes and references and you'll very often find that they are not directly pertinent to the point and do not support McConkie's opinion. In many cases, his ideas have been refuted by current authorities. I'll never forget his final testimony of Jesus Christ, but I've retired this book.

More has been revealed. Remarkable book but not to be mistaken as the official voice of the Church.
