Product Description

In a first of its kind release, Nearer: A New Collection of Favorite Hymns is a fresh, current take on the hymns that are most loved by young adults (as determined by a recent online poll of nineteen to twenty-five year-olds). Keeping in mind a reverence and respect for these hymns, such artists as Kalai, Mindy Gledhill, Sarah Sample, and others help young adults feel more in touch with the Lord through their music.

Nearer combines the sacred and simple themes of hymns such as “Be Still, My Soul” and “I Need Thee Every Hour” with an organic yet humble style. This newly recorded collection communicates the testimonies of young adults in a voice more similar to their own, while keeping a reverent feeling throughout. In a world full of trials and troubles, Nearer: A New Collection of Favorite Hymns helps bring young adult members closer to God, while making them feel represented and firm in their beliefs. It is an instant classic every young adult will connect with.

Fabulous!!!!

by Mary - reviewed on May 16, 2010

I'm almost 60 years old and I find this a refreshing, inspiring, and wonderful reworking of hymns and themes that are planted deep in my heart. Organs and choirs are NOT the only way to feel the Spirit. The Spirit comes to each of us in unique fashion and this music opened me to a fresh experience like nothing has in a long time. Very well done and very much appreciated. I will purchase more music if it is as innovative as this collection.

Love how it speaks to the diversity in all of us

by Lisa - reviewed on April 19, 2010

I realize this album is not for everyone. That said, I am VERY glad to see Deseret Book trying to speak to a wider, perhaps younger, demographic. Hymns are sacred, but what makes them sacred is the sweet, glorious spirit they bring to your soul. That process is different for everyone. No one is suggesting these versions be played in Sacrament meeting. My children really enjoy this and I am for anything that will help cement the beautiful lyrics of these hymns into their heads and hearts.

Not impressed

by Sandy - reviewed on April 15, 2010

I just listened to the sound bites of the CD and I based on what I heard I would not be interested in puchasing this CD. The arrangements do not seem suitable to the hymns nor are the vocals impressive. I am sometimes surprised and dissappointed in what Deseret Book is willing to put on their shelves.

i LOVE this CD

by Customer - reviewed on September 08, 2009

wow. wow. wow. i have not stopped listening to this CD since i got it and now i want to get it for all my friends and family. it's not your typical "hymns album" and i think that's what i love most. it's completely reverent, yet refreshing and relevant to today's music trends at the same time. a "must have" in my opinion.

I LOVE THIS CD!

by Customer - reviewed on October 14, 2009

Finally, an album of hymns that feels current and hip, but is still reverent and filled with the Spirit. My 14 year old daughter puts it on every Sunday and we all thoroughly enjoy it. I can not stress enough how great the music is on this collection.

By far the best!

by Jo Anna - reviewed on July 18, 2010

This was the best contemporary style hymn CD I've heard. I loved it. I gave my copy to a friend after her loved one passed, then bought another copy for myself.

A Nice Idea

by Shalyce - reviewed on March 14, 2010

I love the idea of this album and thought I would love it. I didn't think the arrangements were great though. It was okay, but I thought they could have done a better job with making the arrangements both contemporary and beautiful. It seemed like they tweeked them just enough to be a little different, but it wasn't always great. I give four stars for the effort and idea.

When is the second one coming out?

by Dana - reviewed on November 11, 2009

I love this CD.I don't usually buy this type of music, but have found it very uplifting and fun to listen to at the same time. It's great traveling music. I would love to see more hymns done like this.

Different, not in a good way!

by Elizebeth - reviewed on April 16, 2010

I love these songs when the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is singing them. There are only 4 (song numbers 1,6,9,11) songs on this cd that I would say are worth listening to. I agree with another review that sayed they've tweeked them enough that they don't sound like hymns. You have to be really careful with the hymns because they are sacred!

Beautiful!

by Heather - reviewed on December 02, 2010

As a rule of thumb, I am very picky about the music I listen to because I have found what I tune into really affects my mood. Music speaks to my soul. This CD has changed me. It is incredible. The first thing I love is the jewel case cover....simple but serene. Some of my all-time favorite singers are on this album, notably Mindy Gledhill and Sarah Sample. They add a folky twist to traditional hymns while still keeping them close enough to their foundation. I recommend adding Nearer to your Christmas wish list and gifting it to Young Adults you know. It's been played over and over in my home and I can't say enough about it to those I love. Favorite tack: Be Still My Soul ; it is breathtaking. Absolutely five stars to a CD that rooted itself within my heart. Thank you so much to Deseret Book for sending this to me; I may never have found it on my own.

Very cool!

by Amanda - reviewed on April 20, 2010

This is something that I would listen in the car instead of a radio station. I'm not gonna sit around and listen to hymns and their original arrangement. But this is very cool and is more my type of music. It feels more geared toward a younger crowd. Not for my grandma. :)

Music to make every day a little more sacred

by Deanna - reviewed on October 26, 2009

"Anybody can observe the Sabbath, but making it holy surely takes the rest of the week." -Alice Walker I love hymns and the way they can plant eternal truths into our hearts and minds, but I have to admit, I'm not a fan of choir recordings. Instrumental versions are okay, but if I need a gospel refresher course as a soundtrack for my everyday life, I need the words. The songs of "Nearer" uplift my soul and help me focus on the Lord's grace whether I'm stuck in rush-hour traffic or peeling potatoes. The clean, simple vocals and acoustic accompaniments bring light and peace to my hectic life.

Awesome, but not for everyone.

by Customer - reviewed on April 16, 2010

I have really enjoyed this album and the different style for each song. This is definitely not a CD for everyone and after reading some of the reviews it seems you either like or don’t. I liked it.

I don't like this album at all!

by Mindy - reviewed on April 15, 2010

Some of these arrangements are really awful. I am surprised Deseret Book is selling this. I didn't like it at all. I don't recommend this to anyone.

I love it!!!

by Customer - reviewed on October 23, 2010

This album is different, but in a good way. I am a young adult still living my non-member parents. They don't mind listening to these arrangements, but the traditional ones are not for them. I can have this album playing in the car or in the background of the day and my parents don't mind...I have even caught my mom singing along. I hoping that this album might spark their interest.

A beautiful, reverent, folk sound

by Customer - reviewed on February 07, 2010

I had gotten out of the habit of listening to LDS music after moving away from Utah where it was available on the radio. However, I got a job at an LDS bookstore and started playing demo cd's. None of them particularly stood out from the others (except for some that were so cheesy I couldn't bare them or others that were too loud for work)...then I heard this one. I played it over and over and ended up buying a copy for myself to bring home (first time in over a decade). It is reverent, compelling, and has given me a whole new respect for LDS music. It may not be to your taste--especially if you don't like accoustic guitar, or the folk sound...I had a customer note her particular distaste for the Onward Christian Soldiers arrangement (admittedly it does get a bit strange). Still, it is a CD I can whole-heartedly recommend to my customers.

Not my cup of tea (but then I don't drink tea)

by Customer - reviewed on December 10, 2009

I'm sure this album will really touch a lot of people who are into modern folk music. I'm not one of those people, however. But if you like it, you might also consider listening to other mainstream Christian recordings of hymns. You may be surprised to learn that almost 100 of our hymns are mainstream Christian songs written before our church was organized. Some of their arrangements and vocals are really cool. This album sounds all the same to me. I'm surprised that the songs are actually by different artists, since most of the guys and girls sound the same to me. They sound like they are trying to hard to imitate a sound and not put an emphasis on any particular lyrics or meaningful words. Kalai has a song on there with a different sound, but still sounds to me like a Bob Marley wannabe. Bob had some great religious songs also, but is not a great role model. I saw Kalai in concert and wasn't impressed with his demeanor or character. The songs that were exceptions to me were “It is Well With My Soul” by Dustin Christensen, which I found to be very fresh and enjoyable. The same with the song “More Holiness Give Me” by Debra Fotheringham. I wish there were some other new and modern sounds to this album. Add a little David Archuleta type sound (his AI ballads, not his self-named release). Put some acappella on there like Vocal Point or Eclipse. Or put some singing with a little piano. Where's the country influenced songs or Brook White sound? That or else leave it the same and just title the album A New [Folk] Collection of Favorite Hymns. I took part in the survey they did a year ago and was a bit disappointed that this was the result. Why not release a collection of a dozen different modern LDS genres/sounds of hymns instead of two or three. Listen and decide for yourself before buying.

Not impressed

by Customer - reviewed on October 13, 2009

It may be for some, but this is not my type of music. I want to be wowed by someone's vocal talent. A lot of the vocals on this are unbearable with how the artists feel the need to pronounce the words. Maybe I am stupid and behind on the times, but when did it become cool to enunciate like that? Besides the enunciation, the breathy singing is nothing special. Anyone can do that with their voice. I am just not sure why people keep giving this album such great reviews.

the most powerful compilation i've ever experienced!

by Tiffani - reviewed on October 24, 2009

I cannot get over the power within this cd! I usually don't LOVE these LDS mixes, if I'm going to listen to hymns and religious tunes I'm going to go for the MoTAB or Afterglow, but I heard about this cd on a blog that I follow, and I purchased it! I cannot believe the wonderful spirit that has been brought into my life because of these revamped songs! I honestly have been listening to it all week in my car! Be Still My Soul, and Nearer My God To Thee have moved me in ways I've never felt! ☺

This music touched my heart.

by Jo-Anne - reviewed on April 19, 2010

I was looking for songs for easy listening and found these,I have 2 autistic grand children that need calming at times. I thought this CD would be good for them to listen to at home and in the car so when they do get to church they will remember the words and tunes of the hymns. They love to listen to music at night when they are going to sleep. This is going to be perfect for them and me too.

Love this album!!

by pamela - reviewed on April 30, 2010

Hello, Just received this in the mail and am now listening to it. I love the freshness and acoustical sound of this music. I am over 50 so it's not just for the new generation. Thank to those whole compiled these songs together and offered a different sound for a nice and welcome change. I would highly recommend! Pam Roder

Captivated me!

by Laury - reviewed on April 26, 2010

It has been years since I bought any music from Deseret Book. I was curious and listened to the free download and from that, I bought the whole album. What I don't understand why the artist names aren't listed on the individual tracks. Since I downloaded them, I will never know who did this amazing work and that too me is very unfortunate! There are some I love more than others, but honestly this is the freshest thing I have heard from Deseret Book in years. I recognize this is not Sacrament meeting arrangements, but this is definitely food for my soul!!!

Just Okay

by Michelle - reviewed on May 18, 2010

I was very excited to check out this CD but I have to admit, when I listened to the sound bites, I was just a bit dissapointed. In my opinion, some of the arrangements didn't portray the feeling that the song was meant to give. For example, "How Great thou Art" and "Come, Come, Ye Saints" are both quite peppy and upbeat for songs that are so reverent in nature. But on a more positive note, tracks 1,4,9 & 11 I thought were very well done.

Not the same old-same old!

by Janeen - reviewed on January 06, 2011

Unique, contemplative, quirky but still respectful, this album is reminiscent of the late 90's folk alternative movement. Some of the arrangements don't quite hit the mark, but the hits outweigh the misses. Thanks for taking a chance on this album, Deseret Book. I would love to see something like this done with Primary Songs. Not every Mormon likes Male a capella.

MY FAVORITE CD!!!!!!!

by Customer - reviewed on September 07, 2010

I am one to read reviews and listen to the sound clips first, but I LOVE this CD and it is so much better than the sound clips allow you to experience!!! I thought about buying just a few of the best songs by downloading them, but I am so glad I got the whole CD...I love everyone! I've listened to it over and over. I hope they make many more volumes like this one...AMAZING!!!!

Finally something refreshing I can relate to

by Christina - reviewed on July 26, 2012

This album is fantastic. It isn't your typical MoTab, a capella, solo artist album (don't get me wrong, those are all great) but it's something new. The beauty of it is it reaches all those other people who are looking for spiritual music who don't fall into any of those categories. Many of the artists on the album hail from the local Utah music scene (which was another reason why I bought it) and it was great to see them bring something individual to the hymns, something personal to them. After I bought it I listened to it non-stop for several weeks and as a result I have now committed several more hymns to memory. I would LOVE to hear more collections like this. I started feeling like hymns could only be recognized or sung by the MoTab or be instrumental and I didn't necessarily always want to listen to that. What this album does is opens up the hymns to a wider audience. I would definitely recommend this collection to anyone of any faith looking for uplifting music.

Music and singing I good, but require a specific taste in music.

by Ryan - reviewed on March 02, 2013

This is not at all what I expected. The hymns are only recognizable by the words. The music is far different and not something you can sing along to. Definitely only suits a specific taste in music.
