No one wants to experience pain. But there seems to be no other way to teach us some of the valuable lessons of wisdom, humility, and endurance that we need to experience in this life. Though pain comes to us in different ways—sometimes self-inflicted, sometimes a natural result of mortality—there are things we can do to minimize our misery and maximize our learning.

Drawing on lessons learned through experience, Hyrum W. Smith discusses gospel principles that can help us understand and deal with the pain that will inevitably come into our lives. He explains the nature of God's plan, why pain is part of the plan, and the importance of knowing who we are. he discusses the liberating power of the Savior's Atonement and the glories of eternity when "God shall wipe away all tears."

Pain is inevitable.. happiness can be too!

Alicia Williams, - May 06, 2004

I started reading this book weeks before an excruciating change would come into my life.. I had no idea what was about to hit me. How grateful I was in the midst of that trial to reflect on the principles I had read only weeks before in this book. I came to a different understanding of the role of pain, how it teaches, refines and even strengthens and betters us as people. The book was presented in an easy to read format, replete with scriptures and personal experiences. Considering the experiences of the author, the book contrasts the effects of pain from our own choices, and the pain of simply being mortal in a fallen world. With that bittersweet trial now behind me, I have a deeper appreciation of the plan of happiness, and ironically, the role of pain in that plan. A wonderful book.. highly recommended for anyone who feels the exquisite effects of mortality.
