About the Author

The 360 members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir represent men and women from many different backgrounds and professions and range in age from 25 to 60. They reflect a medley of unique lives and experiences and are brought together by their love for singing and their faith. Their incomparable voices are the common chord that unites to form the choral group known all over the world as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir originated in the mid-19th century in Salt Lake City. As the Latter-day Saints moved west, Church President Brigham Young included musicians among members of the advance parties. Consequently, a small choir first sang for a conference of the Church in the Salt Lake Valley on August 22, 1847, just 29 days after the first group arrived. The origins of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir may be found in the desire and commitment of early converts to include appropriate music in both sacred and secular events.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has appeared at 13 world’s fairs and expositions, performed at the inaugurations of five U.S. presidents, and sung for numerous worldwide telecasts and special events. Five of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s recordings have achieved “gold record” and two have achieved “platinum record” status. The most popular was the Grammy-Award-winning 1959 release of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

WOW! Buy this...

by Robert - reviewed on October 12, 2004

This is a 5 star CD. I agree with other reviewers in that at times you can't understand the words too well. The hardest song to understand happens to be my favorite...'Thou Gracious God whose mercy lends', but that's because the AWESOME orchestra takes over on the crescendo at the end. I just pull out the handy booklet that has all the words and I memorize them, and then the words don't seem too indecipherable. This is GREAT music. (Although I love 'Consider the Lilies', this collection seems to flow better and as a whole, is a better CD). , By the way, Mack Wilberg and Brother Jesop are geniuses. I do not care for 'Come, let us anew' as a hymn. It's just blah. But on this record, it's as if I heard the hymn for the first time. Remarkable use of drums! This is how that hymn should be sung.(Snare drums in church, anyone?)

This CD caused a change in me, for the good !

by Kate - reviewed on February 26, 2008

I bought this several years ago because it was on sale and I needed a gift ! I listened to it myself and it blew me away. The hymn 'Come Let Us Anew', as sung by the Choir cut me to the marrow. It made me realize how much time I waste and I got busy- when I get down, I think of the words 'for the arrow has flown, and the moments are gone...' and I 'wake up' and get doing something worthwhile. I have bought about 6 of these and am ordering another one today... to give as a gift. Please send my appreciation on to the Choir. Thank You.

Good, but not great

by Customer - reviewed on December 28, 2006

I love the choir CDs, and this has some great songs on it. However, the recording doesn't seem as clear as the sound as pure as some of their previous albums (such as 'Consider the Lilies'). I don't know if they've changed recording methods or if the choir sound has just changed somewhat over time(that's to be expected--no one can sing with the MoTab forever!) but it's just not quite as good as the others. Sometimes the orchestra (or the brass section specifically) drowns out the singing, which I think is sad.

CAPTIVATING!

by Mary Sandra - reviewed on September 15, 2007

This album is awesome. The song 'Peace Like A River' is the most beautiful I have ever heard by any Choir or singer and the special arrangement of verses within the song - Peace, Faith, Hope and Love - are unique. It sends shivers through the body in marvel. What an amazing Choir!

My favorite MTC album of all time

by Kristina - reviewed on October 30, 2010

I've been listen to the MTC for decades and own many recordings, but Peace like a River is my all-time favorite. This is the CD I listen to when I am tired, stressed, or in need of inspiration, hope, and peace in my life. Two years ago I visited a friend who lives near a significant Civil War historic area on the Potomac River in WV/MD. The songs Peace Like a River, Deep River, and the sound of the bells and bagpipes took on new meaning as I thought of the sacrifices tens of thousands soldiers made for the cause of freedom. Now I am filled with gratitude every time I listen to this album. This recording is food for the soul!
