What would it have been like to know the Prophet Joseph Smith? Countless Church members have asked themselves that question. Though books written about the Prophet may shed light on his character and personality, nowhere do we find a clearer picture of him than in his own writings.
This volume, now updated and revised, collects the personal writings of Joseph Smith - those written in his own hand or dictated to a scribe - and includes photographs of the original documents. His journal entries, letters and other documents reveal the true character of the Prophet: his humility, his unwavering loyalty to his family and friends, his love of life, his commitment to the Church, and his deep spiritualty and desire to do the will of the Savior, whose servant he was.
Readers will share Joseph's joys and sorrows, understand the price he paid for truth, and realize that here, indeed, was a prophet of God.

Mini Version of the Joseph Smith Papers
Kendal, UT - March 31, 2011
Even with the publication of the Joseph Smith Papers (JSP), this book is not obsolete. Its small size makes it more readable, and therefore more useful to the interested amateur that the large and bulky JSP volumes. Additionally, we are not bogged-down by commentary—as helpful as commentary is. We can read the primary sources, fall in love with them, and use this book as a springboard to swan-dive in to the JSP.
C. S. Lewis once said, "The only use of selections is to deter those readers who will never appreciate the original, and thus save them from wasting their time on it, and to send all the others on the original as quickly as possible."
As such, consider this book a “selection” of what you get in the JSP. You get the holographic reproductions of original documents.
In plain English, the misspelling, typos, cross-outs, and caret-insertion are preserved, much like the first draft of that high school paper you crammed out the night before it was…
