About the Author
I wouldn't recommend it.
by marcia - reviewed on January 19, 2008
We received this movie for Christmas and everyone was excited to see it. However, the acting was a huge disappointment. The story was fair, with a good surprise ending, although it wasn't as much about missionary work as it was about attitude. I couldn't recommend it, though, without a huge caveat that the acting is really bad. I wouldn't want to see it again, nor would I have wanted to waste my time seeing it the first time.My bottom line Sorry...try something else.
I should've listened - BIG DISAPPOINTMENT
by Angie - reviewed on April 01, 2008
I was looking forward to this movie so much, the only thing that swayed me from buying it sight unseen was reading the poor reviews posted here. I did go ahead and rent it though, and all I can say is thank goodness I didn't waste the money to buy it! The only reason I finished watching it was to 'get my $4-worth', but even that is questionable! I would definitely skip any other opportunity to see it again and would never show it to someone, whether they are in the Church or not. I totally agree with what other posters mentioned as being inappropriate and annoying. This movie came nowhere near the uplift I was looking for, and I am baffled by the positive reviews here - they must have seen some other show!!
It has its weaknesses yet is wrapped up nicely.
by Joseph - reviewed on January 02, 2008
Was definently worth the money as it also tells a great story about not judging others on appearance or expecting to know all of God's will. It has its weaknesses yet is wrapped up nicely.
Didn't like the cleavage!
by Customer - reviewed on May 12, 2008
Just got this movie; hadn't read the other reviews. I thought the basic story was good. I wasn't bothered by the friend with tattoos or the mom working in a bar; everyone has interesting family members, so I could see that being possibly real. The thing that bothered me about this movie being a 'Mormon' movie was the girlfriend's clothing; in nearly every clothing change she was showing some cleavage. That's probably true to life for a lot of Mormons these days, unfortunately, but I thought it was inappropriate to portray a temple-bound Mormon girl that way. I don't really want my teenage girls to see this movie for that reason.
Boring!!!
by Customer - reviewed on April 08, 2008
I was extremely let down by this movie. It was so boring that half of us watching fell asleep. The other half wished they had too. I thought is was a tacky portrayal and non-realistic. Don't bother watching it unless you want a good nap.
Just liked it!

While this may not be the best LDS movie I can not understand why so many dislike it so much. I think it is a good movie and very worth watching.
The worst LDS film I have ever seen!
by Customer - reviewed on March 17, 2008
The only reason I gave it one star is because there isn't a 0 star option. So horrible we couldn't even finish it! There was no connection with the characters the girlfriend ('hey, baby!') was pathetic, the best friend was a joke, the mother was unsympathetic, and the return missionary was dull and lifeless - even before he died. We couldn't hold on until the end to see if it ever redeemed itself.
Great Little Movie

Sure the acting was not oscar worthy performances, more like real people, and that's what sucked me into the characters. , I loved this movie. Very touching.
Good movie!

I am suprised by the reviews! This was no high budget hollywood film but it was good. This movie was funny, sad, cute...all in one, with a good message to boot!
Skip this - you won't miss anything

Maybe I expected too much with this show, but unfortunately it's not as good as i had hoped. The title of the film doesn't describe it at all - it really has nothing to do with missionary work and at times it was painful to watch. , My wife thought it was much worse than I did, and she's normally more patient with movies than I am. So I'd have to recommend a pass on this one.
Fantastic Mormon Movie!

Return With Honor was a well written and excellently filmed romantic drama that I was more than happy to take my family to, LDS Cinema has given me a reason to go back to the movie theater. Probably my favorite movie this year!
Wasn't Honorable With This Viewer
by David - reviewed on January 26, 2008
This is one of the most unintentionally funny movies I've ever seen. , The good the music fit the flow of the film and was pleasant. , The bad the storyline/screenplay. Juvenile and incredibly far fetched. The actors showed their inexperience, though the screenplay hurt them. There were several times when we all laughed at the poor dialogue. , This reminded me at times of The Book of Mormon Movie--it had potential but didn't deliver (though this film was not as bad as BofMMovie). , Don't waste your time. I'm sorry I did.
Not worth seeing.
by Melissa - reviewed on February 25, 2008
The idea for the movie is good but the way that is was acted and layed out was poor and juvenile. The movie did not flow well together... The acting was terrible and the storylines were not believable. Rowes girlfriend was a terrible actress and very squirmy and annoying. Overall NOT RECOMMENDED!
Good Message
by Greg - reviewed on October 24, 2007
I think this film is a wake up call for people (including myself; making the mistake of pushing his/her religous beliefs onto others. The main character's growth shows us that loving people for who they are and living your life by example; is the best way to spread your gospel.
A great family film.
by Customer - reviewed on October 23, 2007
I enjoyed this heartwarming film. Seeing a young man's emotional growth in this film is the best part. Great score, and from what I understand, this film won several film festivals, and has been highly regarded even outside the LDS community.
Riveting
by Customer - reviewed on October 24, 2007
If you have ever been judged or have ever been judgemental - and who hasn't - this film will appeal to you. Rowe is a twenty-something with his life - and everyone else's life - planned out, until a near death experience puts his plans on a 60 day deadline and teaches him what usually takes the rest of us a lifetime to realize - Preaching and pre judging does not effect constructive change. I must admit, I squirmed a little in the beginning - but was riveted to my seat by the end.
Help!

Who ever heard of a returned missionary wanting to have sex with his/her fiancé, hanging out in a bar just to talk to his mother (who, by the way, works there), and a Mormon with shaved head, piercings and tattoos? And, if that is not enough for you, how about Bishops talking about how great sex is, and BYU coeds eloping to Las Vegas? Singles ward may be silly but at least it had real characters. Please leave LDS movie making to Utah filmmakers. That part about the church 'taking' our tithes if we don't pay voluntarily and the 'Bully Squad' was ridiculous and a total misrepresentation.
Unlike any film in the genre.
by Tracy - reviewed on October 24, 2007
I found this film to be more than an LDS movie. . The characters in this film were real and more of a reflection of myself and most latter-day saints that I know. The theme of learning to love people rather than judge them can be an uncomfortable experience. I found it to be quite clever how the film engages the audience in forming snap judgments of their own, while at the same time being critical of the main character for doing the same. Unlike any other LDS film that I've seen it really made me think. It's dramatic, touching and entertaining. It starts a bit slow, but hang in there the end is well worth the journey. I Highly recommend it.
moving

A lot of people sitting close to me were in tears by the end of this film. I thought it was pretty effective and I loved the message. It wasn't a missionary movie, thank goodness. And the music was really good. But I like movies that are human and make me laugh and cry.
Still thinking about it.
by Mary - reviewed on October 25, 2007
This movie has staying power. The story is powerful and the message is enduring. It left me emotionally spent and at the same time uplifted. It was funny, sad, romantic, moving, at times uncomfortable and I enjoyed every minute of the journey. WOW!
Enjoy

This movie is like a great meal - lots to chew on, leaves a good taste in your mouth, and fills you up for a long time. Destined to be a favorite.
As a mormon I am embarassed by this movie.
by Customer - reviewed on January 22, 2008
Huge disappointment. First of all, poor acting. And second, its great that the return missionary in this movie wants to talk to his mom but he hangs out in a bar everyday for 2 weeks to do it. I'm sure he could have found an alternative. Also when he is talking about sex with the bishop. Well,... that should have been left out. There were just some inappropriate scenes and over all it was a poor movie.
Not too bad

I thought this was a pretty good movie. I was actually supriesed that the end. It could have been a little better though, the characters tended to be a little frustrating to watch.
Great

Great as a return gift for a missionary.
GREAT movie. GREATER message.
by Customer - reviewed on March 23, 2008
I have NEVER written a review but I love this movie--primarily because of its message. I like movies that make me want to be closer to God and be a better person , Many people don't like to hear that their intolerant attitude of 'change now or we won't like you' isn't a good approach to take when dealing with others who disagree with your choices. They don't like to hear that acceptance and love often come someone can feel safe enough to change. , I love the movie, the message, and it made me want to be a better person. Isn't that what all 'good movies' should be? , It was great. I will buy this movie.
What the?
by J - reviewed on April 02, 2008
Seriously I had been hoping that this would be a great movie in the vein of 'Best Two Years' or something like that.... My hopes were dashed within the first few minutes. This film is so rediculous and poorly acted it makes me wonder if any of the people involved were LDS. I certainly think that the screenwriter could have taken some time in a gospel doctrine class. I wonder if they even spoke to a singles ward Bishop. That scene made me cringe. , I know that this is an LDS film about LDS issues and culture, but that doesn't make it a good movie. I feel disheartened that this film has garnered any positive reviews. It really doesn't deserve them. This film could have been awesome. All it needed was different actors, a different screenplay, a different director and a sense of purpose. Yeah.... it could have been that movie however it most definitely is not.
Good film.

we used this for FHE just loved it and the message it has!
Enjoyable, but a bit difficult to follow.
by Morgan - reviewed on September 22, 2008
The movie was better than okay. But, the acting and the writing left a little to be desired. If you enjoy a good popcorn drama (a movie you can sit down and enjoy), then this is it. It gets a bit intense in the message, but is overall enjoyable.
boring

this movie would have been really good had they not draged it out for what seemed like forever. so to say the least i was really disapointed because the potential was there but they failed to use it.
Thought provoking..
by Amanda - reviewed on October 07, 2008
This movie was amazing! One of the themes seemed to be that you can never judge a person until you have talked to them and know where they are coming from. Its also a bit of a tear jerker for those that are really into romance.
A real tear jerker

DEPRESSING
by Customer - reviewed on April 25, 2009
I bought this movie so my teenage sons might get inspired to serve a mission. I expected it to be uplifting and a 'feel-good' movie. NOT SO!! I actually have it tucked way back in the bookshelf. I would say rent it before you buy it. It might be what someone needs, but not us!
worth seeing
by Matthew - reviewed on June 04, 2009
So many reviews were critical. I expected the acting and production quality to be low. I was pleasently surprised and even let the video store hit me with late fees so I could watch it a few more times. Think about what is otherwise available for viewing. It is wonderful that production companies invest there time and money in films like this. Not a thing to be critical about here, though others have, some within reason.
What was that?
by Manolo - reviewed on December 09, 2010
I went into this wanting to like it. However, this is unquestionably the worst LDS-themed movie I've ever seen. Some of the people commenting on how great this movie is must be seriously deprived of any entertainment. This movie makes The Fast and The Furious (worst movie I'd seen before this) look like Oscar material. Save your time and money. The old missionary filmstrips are a thousand times better.
Best movie i have ever seen!
by Customer - reviewed on May 31, 2010
i don't understand why everyone is hating this film, i watched this movie last night with my mother, and it was the most emotional movie i have ever seen. Great movie, EVEN greater message. everyone whom i know loves this movie. and the part of the movie where he is hanging out in the bar at the beginning weirded me out a little but, i watched the rest and it made sense why he was there, and for you people who hate this movie and get angry at him staying at the bar, he was waiting for his mom to get off work so he can talk to his mother and try to teach her, that's what his mission was, in which the lord told him isn't it. he had 60 days to teach his mother of the gospel. would you not do that for your own mother, i would to have her learn
Pleasantly surprised
by Bertha - reviewed on July 27, 2011
It looks like I'm a little late, since this movie came out 4 years ago. But before I watched it, I had only heard negative critiques. I am glad to say, overall, I was pleasantly surprised. What I've noticed in the reviews is that some people say the characters are totally unrealistic, while others say the characters are just like people in real life. So, I think it depends on the viewer's perception and experience. I'm not sure what people mean when they say "bad acting". I was actually impressed with the lady that plays the non-member mom, because she plays righteous women in every other LDS movie. My favorite was the guy that played the best friend. His character is so...awesome! This movie isn't my most favorite, but it's certainly not my least favorite. It definitely has its virtues.
Why an LDS Girl Showing Cleavage?
by Glen & Ann - reviewed on July 31, 2012
I felt so encouraged that I am not the only commenter who was turned off at being ambushed by images of a young (LDS!) woman's exposed chest cleavage. (See: "Didn't Like the Cleavage" May 12, 2008.) Why in blazes does LDS Cinema sometimes seem to insist on embedding their movies with spice from Babylon? It is just so needless. Even old (non-LDS) Hollywood movies often proved that there was no need to use foul image content to make poignant stories. I don't understand why so many directors and producers feel the need to compromise standards. It is needless, cheep.
