For Single Saints

A CLOSER LOOK

by Mary Jane Woodger

Talk on CD

As a single Latter-day Saint, Mary Jane Woodger says she gets tired of all those people who tell singles to have hope because there is some “wonderful singles ward in the spirit world where they will have access to all the babes and hunks from all dispensations.” Or the single women who say they guess they’ll just have to wait and marry one of the stripling warriors. (She has to remind them that the stripling warriors didn’t die. They went home after the battles and got married. They aren’t available!) In this entertaining and thought-provoking talk for singles, Sister Woodger speaks about the crucial roles that faith, hope, prayer, and revelation have in the process of trying to find a mate. Using scriptures, insightful quotes, and fascinating stories from the lives of the prophets in Church history, Sister Woodger illustrates key principles on the topics of courtship and marriage.

“It is a God-given desire for us to want to be married,” says Sister Woodger. “It is part of the plan for us to find one another. Certainly the Lord will help us as He has helped people in the past to meet, date, and marry.” Referring to the scripture in 1 Nephi 3:7, she says, “Nephi’s promise of the Lord ‘preparing the way’ applies to keeping all the commandments, including the new and everlasting covenant of marriage.” For Single Saints will be a welcome and enlightening talk for anyone who could use some real hope on this topic.

I'm not single but have friends of various ages who are. I found her talk interesting and enjoyed her stories to illustrate concepts. I think this CD/talk could be helpful for those who are single to see that its okay but like she says...the Lord cannot drive a parked car...so each has to do their part. Helpful to myself, so that I can remember that I should be more sensitive to my single friends' needs and concerns, be encouraging as well, assuring that there is hope and all is still well and good. That they, like the rest of us, are not alone.
