Product Description

In this important talk, originally given while he was president of BYU, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland turns his remarkable spiritual and literary talents to the subject of human intimacy. Rather than simply listing the dos and don'ts of personal purity, Elder Holland reviews the doctrinal seriousness of this topic and examines “why we should be clean, and why moral discipline is such a significant matter in God's eyes.” Relying on scripture and statements from the prophets and using thought-provoking insights from poets and philosophers, he explains clearly, and without reserve, why Latter-day Saints cannot adopt the world's views about intimacy.

About the Author

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in June 1994. A native of St. George, Utah, he received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree and PhD in American Studies from Yale University. In 1974 he became dean of Religious Education at BYU and two years later was named Church Commissioner of Education. In 1980 he was appointed president of BYU, where he served until he was sustained as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1989. Elder Holland is the author of several books, including Broken Things to Mend and Christ and the New Covenant. He and his wife, Patricia, have three children and thirteen grandchildren.

One of the best talks to listen to

by Customer - reviewed on October 25, 2008

This talk is great for teens and young adults, but also for married couples as well. Elder Holland's insight to purity and chastity carries the truth of what he says to my heart. Would be very valuable for teaching children.

Perfect for teens for FHE

by Jill - reviewed on September 11, 2008

If you're looking for a FHE lesson for your children on the Law of Chasity---look not further. This is the best thing available-- Elder Holland is always so loving and remarkable in his teaching methods. My husband and I love to watch it as constant reminders--- it's better than the other version you get in every TV show and movie.

A POSITIVE approach to chastity!

by Tamara - reviewed on August 06, 2007

I have loaned my copy out so many times, (I finally purchased an extra copy for that purpose.) Those I have suggested the book to, have always said it was a great book on the subject matter. That the positive manner in which the subject is approached, makes it that much easier to follow.

Understanding your Divine Worth and the Sacred Power within.

by DD - reviewed on March 06, 2008

After listening to Elder Holland, it is frightening to think of what the world has made of personal purity and human intimacy. Elder Holland presents a striking contrast of the meaning of Personal purity. Understanding through 'Of Souls, Symbols, and Sacraments' will give you a greater desire to keep this commandment as you discover your divine worth and the sacred power within you.

Must Read Talk for Everyone--but why the charge?

by Customer - reviewed on June 01, 2012

Elder Holland's talks are always deep, cut to the core of the doctrine, and powerful. This is one of his best talks, and should be read by everyone who wants to understand the meaning of temple covenants and how we use them in our daily lives. I heard this talk referenced in two other BYU speeches, and finally found it online. I hate to complain about this as part of the review on the talk, but want to express that I am highly disappointed that BYU Broadcasting did not have this talk available on their website--something about a change in the talk and how it needed to be sold by DB. It seems that Deseret Book has now monopolized the market and the only way to access these talks is to purchase them via Deseret Book. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth that messages such as these must be bought and purchased rather than available for the general public. I don't have a problem with charging money if the talk has been neatly packaged into a book with covers, etc., but to dominate the talk by making it unavailable elsewhere is surely not a good precedent. Hopefully there is an explanation for this better than that the talk was changed and needed to be re-published.

Pleased but confused

by Andrew - reviewed on August 29, 2012

This is one of the most powerful and influential talks I've ever read. I do not understand why the Church does not offer MP3 downloads on the BYU website, as it does with many other sermons.
