About the Author
Prologue
Jim
“Jenny and I followed after the Apostles, our hearts glowing like torchlight, our minds racing. Others ran past us, too impatient to wait. Enthusiasm and wonder radiated around us—in every living creature, every living or inanimate object. It was infectious.
Intoxicating. My gaze was sweeping back and forth, searching the multitude at the bottom of the hill. I wiped frantically at my tears. I could hardly see anything at all!
“But for an instant my vision cleared. The crowd parted. A figure stood out like a beacon, like a searchlight, in the midst of the multitude. My emotions overflowed—I felt as if I might drown in them. He stood there, unmoving, patiently waiting, a loving smile upon His face, the impassioned crowd pressing Him on all sides.
“As we drew near, I swore there was an instant when He took us in with His perfect, loving smile. He acknowledged us. He knew me!—just as He knew every living soul gathered about Him.
“He was here. The King had come in peace.
“My Savior, our Redeemer.
“The Son of God.”
I am a wretched man. Yes, Jim Hawkins is a wretched man.
Don’t stop reading or toss the book. Indulge me for a minute. After reviewing my last words from the previous volume, the reality of my state of being pulses inside me like a star verging on supernova or the heartbeat of an earthworm.
I confess my wretchedness in utter humility. No ulterior thread of pride. No secret whisper of, “Okay, you’ve confessed the obvious. You may now feel superior to those who will never confess.”
I say it merely because it’s true. One of the truest statements I could ever make. And I don’t feel particularly wise for having stated it. It just . . . is.
When a person meets perfection—when he stands face to face with a perfect Being, someone who is nevertheless so physically similar . . . two arms and legs, eyes to see, a nose to smell, and ears to hear . . . one’s weaknesses, his wretchedness, can become particularly glaring. Or so it was for me.
The thing of it is that I had tried so hard. Aspired so sincerely. And still, the end result was the image that I faced in the mirror. I trailed so embarrassingly far behind. As I considered the spiritual progress He had made in only two-thirds of the time that I had presently spent in mortality, I felt deeply, hopelessly ashamed.
Yes, He was the Son of God. It’s easy to point out that His ancestry was far superior to my own. Yet He’d come into this world in circumstances far less advantageous. And still, He’d progressed line upon line, precept upon precept, just like any other child of our Father in Heaven who’d come to this earth to receive the glorious
blessing of a mortal body. This is what made the difference between us all the more astounding. It came down to choices. For Him, every choice was correct. Every minute. Every moment. Every consequence. While for me . . . I can’t even count the number of my sins and mistakes in any given hour. But the emotion I felt in His presence, along with the whole range of every other spectacular emotion, was not jealousy. Never jealousy. Just . . . shame. Resignation. And
worthlessness.
But I wasn’t worthless, right? I was a soul of infinite worth. And why? As far as I could figure out, the reason that I wasn’t worthless was because He didn’t see me that way. But why didn’t He see me that way? Why in the world would He, did He, utilize the very fact of His perfection, the incomparable power that He gained from that perfection, to save . . . me?
My failure to comprehend His reasons, His motives, consumes me. Haunts me. For what purpose did He love me so much? Why did He love us all? Why was He so willing to do what He did? That is, what He was about to do? Why would He endure it? The only hint I’ve ever found is from a scripture in the Pearl of Great Price. The book of Moses says that it brings Him joy. This same verse proclaims that God’s entire work and glory is to bring to pass mankind’s immortality and eternal life.
His work.
His glory.
My eternal life.
And His joy.
But just as I cannot comprehend the why, I also cannot fathom the how. Most of all, I can’t comprehend the distribution and dissemination of His love—how He is able to project and express such love to each of His children. There are so many of us! Billions and billions! Yet I can sincerely report, whenever I’ve truly felt the love and comfort of God, the feeling has been so intimate, so individual, that I weep even now to think of it.
And now, on this day, and over the next several days, I was about to feel that individual love again, and in a way that would pierce my heart and penetrate my psyche more deeply than I could have ever expected. Ever imagined.
During this same time, as I witnessed the unfolding of so many staggering events in ancient Jerusalem, something else struck me. Perhaps it should have been obvious. But in the context of my current circumstances, I found it quite profound. I realized that the Savior’s love and His power were one and the same. The source of His power was His love. Two phenomena, inseparably connected.
So, to follow this line of logic to its towering apex, if the source of God’s power is love, it must also be the source of our power. The power to receive revelation. To obtain wisdom. To transform and influence events and elements through faith. The power
literally to move mountains is based not only on faith, but upon love. Too bad.
Sometimes we’d love to think that such power can be obtained and exercised for our own personal benefit. It just doesn’t seem to work that way, at least not in the beginning. God gave to Nephi, the son of Helaman, his amazing powers to bring to pass anything he so desired, to bind whatsoever he willed on earth and in heaven, because God trusted and knew that Nephi would not ask for anything contrary to Heaven’s will. In other words, God trusted Nephi’s love. He was fully cognizant of Nephi’s love for Him, and Nephi’s love for all of God’s children.
I know that whenever I’ve felt consumed by anger or bitterness, whenever I’ve felt lost and alone and without hope, a part of me has been able to open itself up to the love of God, and everything else evaporates. Just the feeling, the mere hint of the full depth and breadth of God’s individual love for me, and suddenly I am endowed with the power to act, to shake off the shackles of despondency, and do precisely what needs to be done. That’s the power of love. That catchy song from the 1980s had it right. That’s the literal power of love.
So if love is power, then selfishness is weakness. Selfishness seems to me a far better antonym for love than hatred. After all, hatred is rooted in selfishness. And if selfishness is the opposite of love, it must also be the opposite of power. When we are selfish, or act in some way that serves only ourselves, we physically and spiritually cut
ourselves off from Heaven’s power and progress, like yanking the plug from the outlet or blocking the light of the sun. Only by losing ourselves in service, in charity—in love— can we become like God.
Profound thoughts, eh? Or maybe not. I know they’re just words. And I’m no better than anyone else in my ability to turn mere words into life-altering actions. Undoubtedly that explains why we couldn’t just take a class on mortality before we came to earth, with God as our personal instructor. It explains why we had to experience the entire spectrum and minutia of life in mortality for ourselves. Words must be coupled with events, memories, and experience to have a lasting, eternal impact. These same criteria are also necessary in learning how to love.
So how is such love best expressed? How can we know that we possess this gift? I suppose the answer isn’t complicated. It’s obedience. Obedience to God’s commands. Actually, in my life I can hardly recall when my obedience was inspired by love. Normally, it’s been inspired by fear—fear of the consequences for disobedience. As it
states plainly in Doctrine and Covenants 130:20–21, blessings are predicated upon obedience. So, to me, it seems logical to conclude that a lack of blessings—roadblocks, brick walls, or curses—are predicated upon disobedience. Unfortunately, this deduction often became my motivation for living the commandments. Rarely had my spiritual willingness to act and obey been motivated purely by my love for God, neighbors, or self.
So perhaps that explains why I was here. Why I was destined to witness the extraordinary, wondrous, and catastrophic things that I was about to witness. It seems to me that there is no greater instigator or inspirer of love than gratitude. And, sadly, gratitude was too often the very thing I lacked.
But never again. Not after what I would see. Not after what I would feel.
Please. Help me, God.
Never, ever again.
Huge Cliffhanger Book of Mormon Adventure!!!

Tennis Shoes Adventure Series: Vol. 11: Sorcerers And Seers by Chris Heimerdinger Well, it's about time we get to read more about the adventures of Jim Hawkins, his sister Jenny and Garth Plimpton, plus all their children and the Book of Mormon and New Testament characters we've come to love. The first time I heard Chris was close to finishing this Volume was last year and the deadline came and went, so we found out it was being released early Sep of this year. Well, the wait was well worth it, but Chris, please not keep us in suspense another five years!!!! For those not familiar with the Tennis Shoes Adventure Series, the first Volume is entitled Tennis Shoes Among The Nephites. Jim, Garth and Jenny embark on a fascinating and terribly exciting journey into Book of Mormon and New Testament lands, winding up in Frost Cave, Wyoming that takes them on a time travel journey of mass proportions. In this volume, we find Jim and Jenny side by side with the Mortal Messiah in Gethsemane and Golgatha, while witnessing the wrath and rejection of His followers, ones who cannot comprehend His full earthly mission to save mankind. Joshua Plimpton, Chief Captain of the Nephites, is on a quest to destroy the vilest of villains to rescue the Golden Plates. He has both the sword of Laban and the Liahona with him. He has times of struggling with his faith, but he manages to realize whose side he is fighting for and his faith becomes strong with the aid of Hamira, one of King Omer's granddaughters. They come in contact with huge Mastadon's as they journey towards Cumorah. We continue to savor the exploits of Appollus, our fearless andcourageous Roman Centurion, who shows Meagan just how much he loves her when she is seriously injured by a "Gadianton Ghost." It's surprising for the group when they find how adept Huracan, the black jaguar is, who has been with the group for a long time as well as Rafa, Harry's constant companion and a Perigrine Falcon, who appears to know when things will happen to warn the group ahead of time. Other characters we're friends with are Gidgiddonihah, who died and was brought back to life to change history, Rebecca, Josh's 10 year old sister, who was also born in Book of Mormon days, Marcos,a former Gadianton Robber, Mahonri Moriancumr, the brother of Jared, Pagag, son of Mahonri Moriancomr and Ryan Champion, former boyfriend of Meagan. And,then we have Steffani, Jim's daughter and the most athletic of the Hawkins children and constant companion to Pagag. If you love time travel as I do, you'll love this series and if you want to know more about The Book of Mormon and its characters, you'll love this series and book. Also, for those who have listvened to tvhe book on CD, you miss out on the Chapter notes at the end of each chapter. I very highly recommend this next installment, but hope to see it come to a huge climax soon, especially since one main character has ended up back home in Utah where he started out from. I bought my autogaphed copy from Chris. Published by: Covenant Communications, Inc. Published Date: 7 September 2010 ISBN: 978-1-60861-087-7 491pp

Great book full of wonderful cliffhangers that left me on the edge of my seat. Only problem I had was the chapters where Jim and Jenny were in control. The way their events were portrayed did not sit well with me. And in a lot of ways was rather boring for the events they were witnessing. Can't wait for the next one and hope it doesn't take as long as this one did to be released.
Better and better

Those who are avid fans of Chris Heimerdinger will commiserate with me in the agony that has been the last five years. One began to wonder if we would ever find out how the story would go on. And now that the wait is over, I can say, with complete assuredness, that the wait was definitely worth it. Every second. But please, please, Mr. Heimerdinger, don’t make us wait that long ever again. Though all the Tennis Shoes books are one continuous story, the “beginning” of this particular part of the story actually started in Book 8. And I’m simultaneously sorry and happy to say that it doesn’t end in Book 11. When we left our dear friends, they were separated into three groups, but everyone was relatively safe and well. Of course, it’s not long before they are all in mortal peril once again. This book is a rollercoaster of action and emotion. And along the way, we meet new characters, some of whom we immediately love. I loved this book. As I say to anyone to whom I am recommending these books, “They just get better and better.” And that’s not to diminish the worth of the earlier books. It’s just that there always seems to be something new and unexpected and completely amazing around every corner. Something that, I feel, truly sets these books apart is the absolute sincerity of the Spirituality and Emotion. You will not find patronizing words or blanket statements in these pages. The spiritual journeys of the characters are so real, you feel as if it could be your own. I cannot count all the moments when the words would blur through the tears in my eyes. I am continually in awe of the genius, imagination, organization and inspiration that is Chris Heimerdinger. But I don’t pause long to question it. I can only be grateful that he has chosen to share it all with the world.
Your favorite characters fight for life, working against the powers of darkness.

The Tennis Shoes Adventure Series begins when a group of teens go spelunking in Frost Cave, and after falling into an underground river they find themselves in the land of the Nephites. The series progresses to chronicle the adventures of them and their families’ as they explore the times of Christ, and other characters of the scriptures. In Volume 11: Sorcerers and Seers, the adventures of the whole Hawkins and Plimpton families are lost in time. This book is packed with close calls and chilling revelations as the families try to find their way through time and space to be together once more. This series has been a long time reading project of mine, and I was excited to have this installment come out, especially since I have been waiting five years for it. For having so much hype about it, I felt Sorcerers and Seers was a letdown. For being left on such a big cliffhanger in the last book, I felt that this one should have had some more action. I also feel that some of the more key points should have been described better, like in the other books. It came off as slow, with quick and somewhat confusing action scenes, and there wasn’t as much detail or emotion. Some of the formerly more dynamic characters fell flat. At the same time, it was satisfying to make some progress forward. The developing relationship between Josh Plimpton and Hamira was interesting, however rushed, and the largest group of lost travelers finally made it to their destination, but not without casualties. I loved the humor added through the confusing “speech” of Rafa, a Peregrine falcon from the times of the Jaredites, who seems to have a knack for spotting danger. I also enjoyed the insightful ideas the author had concerning the operation of the Liahona. The book ended on a major cliffhanger, with two of the more prominent characters suddenly and mysteriously arriving back home. I was left eager to see what would happen next. Overall, I would recommend Sorcerers and Seers to any lover of the Tennis Shoes series. The new developments and surprises will capture your attention, holding it until the final page is turned. You’ll be amazed at seeing how the destinies of all the characters are intertwined as the series heads for its final climax.
