In the scriptures we are commanded to learn of "things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the nations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms." (D&C 88:79). In this intriguing seminar, Daniel C. Peterson, a noted scholar and professor of Islamic Studies and Arabic at BYU, provides a fascinating look at the history and beliefs of a religion that encompasses more than 1.4 billion people. Dr. Peterson explains such things as shared beliefs of Muslims and Mormons, the events from history that have led to today's fundamentalist movement, and why some Muslims have such an intense hatred for the west. "We can't understand the circumstances that led to this anger by merely watching the news," says Brother Peterson. "We need to examine these actions in context of their history and culture." Understanding Islam: An LDS Perspective is a great tool for all who seek diligently to grow in knowledge and understanding.

Dr. Peterson's insights deliver an informative history of a complex culture.

Vicki, ID - January 10, 2008

With the current state of events in the world I was looking for an understanding of not only the religion but the mindset of the people and culture of Islam. Dr. Peterson's insights were informative and relative. His presentation was intelligent and articulate and he treated their history and contributions with the respect a great culture deserves.
