Product Description
“I_ă_ve always been the one to tell my friends, _ăÄIt_ă_s because the prophet said so._ă_ Now with this book, I can actually give them doctrinal reasons why.” — Brooke, 14
“Some songs on my iPod had swear words. My dad and I read the chapter _ăÄWhy Does the Music I Listen to Matter?_ă_ It was really interesting. I decided to delete the songs with the bad words. I think it_ă_s important to have the Holy Ghost.” — Steven, 12
“This book uses humor and scriptures together to relate to youth. It will help anyone with any problem.” — Brad, 15
Now, the most important answers for LDS youth ages 12_ă_18 can be found in one book. The authors use quotes from Church leaders, informative real-life stories, and colorful graphics to engage the minds of teenagers. Most important, this invaluable book gives readers, including leaders and parents, the doctrinal “whys” to back up the standards found in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet.
Features answers to more than 100 questions, such as:
- Why do some people who break the commandments appear happy?
- Why shouldn_ă_t I just “try” alcohol, just so I can see what it tastes like?
- Why is wearing two pairs of earrings such a big deal? Or is it?
- Why is it wrong to steady date someone if we both have high standards?
- Why is 16 the magical age — is it all that different from 15?
- Why is pornography a big deal if it doesn_ă_t hurt anybody?
- Why shouldn_ă_t I wear flip-flops to Church?
- Why do some people who pay tithing still not have a lot of money?
- Why should I talk to the bishop about certain sins?

Behind the Scenes
How the book came to be from the authors.
This book was a collaborative effort. We originally wrote the book to be just like a regular book – print on the page, and that was it. After we submitted the book, Chris Schoebinger, the product manager asked us to go through the book a second time to add in visuals, graphs, comics – things that would make the book come alive. At first we were hesitant about this approach, but once we got started, it was a ton of fun to bring in visuals along with the text. The next big piece of feedback came from Sheri Dew. She said something like, “This book is good, but in addition to answering questions like, “Why should I be modest” we need to get down to more nitty-gritty questions – questions like, “Why shouldn’t I wear flip flops to church?” “Why is it a big deal if boys sag their pants?” or “Why is it going too far to passionately kiss someone?” So we went back through the book a third time! There were many other people at Deseret Book who worked on the design and layout of the book to make it visually appealing. We’re grateful for this team effort; we could never have done it without everyone’s involvement.

I got this book for my kids/their friends. They enjoyed it. Plus, it is nice as a parent to have a resource to answer some of these questions.

My kids and I LOVE this book! The answers, explanations and object lessons found in this book are written in such a fun way that my kids enjoy reading it. This morning my son wanted to download a song that didn't have a great message. We went straight to this book (and for the strength of youth) for some answers. Such a great teaching tool!! Love it!!
Fabulous!

We use this book along with the Strength of the Youth. It really helps explain the "reasons behind the "rules".
This book just makes so much sense!

It's true... it's not just for teens. I'm a mother of 4 kids ranging from 4 to 13 years old and ALL OF US have enjoyed it and learned from it. It's hard to put it down. For family home evenings sometimes we'll have the kids pick a question from the book and we read the chapter and discuss it. Just from the intro of this book I've learned as a mom not to just say "Because I said so!" to my children anymore and have become more patient as they ask "Why?" a million times. This book contains great info for giving talks and lessons. Must have in your home and give as a gift! Mother-37
Everyone in the family is picking it up!

I bought this for my girls for Christmas (age range 11-18). Every single person in the house has been picking this book up and reading it. It is easy to read a little or a lot. It is kind of like a "bathroom reader" type of book with lots of fun facts, funny stuff along with the serious reasons why it is so important to live the standards of the gospel. I've learned a lot from this book and have a lot more confidence in WHY I am teaching my children certain things. I would highly recommend this book for new members, parents with teens, and anyone who just wants to know WHY!
More than just saying "Don't"
by Customer - reviewed on March 31, 2009
This book is a great resource! Kids and teens love looking through it. I like it because is doesn't just say, "Don't do this, or don't do that", but it explains to youth the why, and the authors do it with doctrine. Highly recommend this book for every youth, and parents of youth.
Great Resource for Families

I'm really impressed with this book. The visuals are inviting to teens and tweens but it contains solid gospel answers to real questions that teenagers ask. It's also so much better than just saying, "Those are the rules of the house." I'm planning to loan it to church leaders and hope it will help with some hard questions they face.
Greatest Book Ever!

I got this book for Christmas last year and at first I thought, Wow..... This doesn't look exciting. But then one day I looked inside it and WOW! Was I excited. I can't put it down. I'm so happy that I was able to receive this book. Thanks John Hilton III and Anthony Sweat By Alia, age 10
A must for every LDS home!
by Brad - reviewed on April 25, 2009
With its unique layout and amazing graphics, this book catches the interest of readers and doesn't let it go. Don't fool yourself into thinking this one is just for teens. Parents and leaders will find valuable analogies and object lessons for many talks and lessons. The authors include enough humor and personal experiences that the book doesn't get preachy. I'm glad to see it among the best sellers because this one is a must for every LDS home.
A Must Have

Santa brought this book for Christmas and so far, without any effort on my part, my 11 year old read it and lately I've been catching my 15 year old with her nose in the book. Why? is such a great book for youth, parents, and youth leaders.
