The Word of Wisdom, a code of health dealing primarily with human nutrition, was promulgated as a divine revelation in 1833 by Joseph Smith, the "Mormon" Prophet. It is a part of the religious system of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which declares that the care of the body is a sacred duty; and it has been practiced measurably by members of the Church with very favorable results.
Three objectives have been kept in mind in the preparation of this book. First, to make clear the meaning of the Word of Wisdom in terms of modern knowledge. Second, to show that the learning of the last century confirms the teachings of the Word of Wisdom. Third, to furnish some information for the guidance, through proper nutrition, of those who seek to retain, improve or recover their health.
About the Authors
It's lifestyle change, not a diet
by Catherine - reviewed on February 18, 2008
I have always known what foods should or shouldn't be eaten in promoting good health, but I never felt as motivated to to eat that way until I read this book. Widstoe was a very intelligent scientist, and his documented research proves his points for maintaining this dietary lifestyle, what I like to call an ancestral diet. Once I understood the implications of eating the modern, processed food diet that most Americans eat, I have striven very hard to change my lifestyle and eliminate those foods. His book may have been written over 50 years ago, but the principles still ring true today. I also appreciated his testimony of Joseph Smith's inspired call as a prophet of God - of which he frequently reminds the reader of throughout the book.

Not a modern dicussion of the WOW
by Sam - reviewed on May 16, 2013
No where in the discription of this book does it state it was published in the 1930s. While I believe the principals and the comandment of the Word of Wisdom is eternal I was very disapointed to learn the scientific references where almost 90years old. This is most definitely not a modern discussion of the Word of Wisdom.
Most thorough and inspired Word of Wisdom book
by JENNIFER - reviewed on June 08, 2013
Sam, it was first published in 1937. It was slightly revised (as stated right in the book)and republished in 1950. I have studied the Word of Wisdom, traditional (historical) nutrition, whole foods, & natural healing/prevention for quite a while now. I am a witness to the fact that following the principles in this book are HEALING and preventative. Elder Widtsoe was inspired and led in writing this amazingly comprehensive book. He was a highly respected scientist. This book was first approved by Heber J. Grant, then again by David O. McKay & Joseph Fielding Smith - and they asked that it be published with urgency. Since that time, honest science has countless times proven these principles to be true. Conspiring men, even in the scientific & medical industries have time & time again tried to convince people otherwise, and because of it, degenerative disease is becoming epidemic. Fraudulent and misleading "studies" are being strewn across the media, and people are giving into what they're saying. I've read a lot of articles & books on the Word of Wisdom, & this is BY FAR the best book available. It has changed my life & the lives of many others. I'm personally grateful that it was finally re-published after being off the market for so long. We need it!!!
