About This Item

In 1892 many Saints feared that to move to California meant spiritual death. The Deseret News once reported, "So much prejudice existed against the Mormons that the very mention of the name was sufficient to bring out abuse and make it next to impossible to be given a hearing." But with more faith than fear, Church leaders and members in Los Angeles pressed forward with an "eye single to the glory of God." More Faith Than Fear recounts their remarkable progress. In the late 1800s, city officials would occasionally restrict missionaries to street meetings "on the lowest spot in Los Angeles," where they would be competing against "songs that were being sung inside of the saloons." In the late twenties many functions in the Hollywood Stake were formal, requiring tuxedos and gowns. The Depression, World Wars I and II, and the hippie movement brought further challenges, as did the special needs of deaf members, and single adults. While the names of members give needed detail, the real story is told in the miracles, inspiration, faith, courage, sacrifice, and dedication that accompany those statistics. When the Saints first came to California they were told that they must be the leaven of the loaf. Indeed, as More Faith Than Fear illustrates, they have done just that. Book is hardcover and it and dust jacket are both in new condition. The book has lots of black and white pictures, including the Los Angeles Temple Dedicated in 1956, President and Sister David O. McKay with the first Los Angeles Temple presidency, President Henry S. Tanner with the California missionaries Los Angeles l895, Ocean Park Branch chapel (presently the Santa Monica Ward chapel) dedicated in 1922, Wilshire Ward chapel dedicated in 1929 and others. 372 pp. FREE SHIPPING!
