In Navajo Madonna and Child, Jesus Christ is depicted sleeping peacefully in the arms of His mother, Mary. This tender painting is a one-of-a-kind spin on a traditional Christian image, drawing inspiration from elements of Navajo culture. It’s a sacred interpretation of the divine relationship between mother and child, between the Savior and a chosen vessel, that emphasizes God’s universal reach. All are alike unto God; all are invited to come to Christ. With vivid colors and masterful talent, artists like Tyrone Whitehorse draw upon cultural lenses of understanding to evoke reflection on that tender reality. About the Artist: Tyrone Whitehorse is a Diné artist from Page, Arizona. His blend of traditional and modern art elements is rooted in a lifelong love for crafting with his hands, as well as the cultural inspiration he draws from his family. His mother, grandmothers, and aunts all cultivated in him a deep sense of appreciation for Navajo culture, while his father instilled in him a work ethic that led him to pursue his creative dreams. As an artist and silversmith, Tyrone works to capture cultural elements of beauty and meaning that can touch the lives of all kinds of viewers: “I have followed in my grandfather’s footsteps and have been inspired by his work to bring my culture and art to the world. Many of my pieces aim to keep the old style of Navajo silversmiths alive. Working contemporary art into my pieces has been a goal in order to appeal to individuals all over the world.”
