Hard Times and Holy Places

Hardcover
by Kris Belcher

Description:

We love the book, Hard Times and Holy Places, by one of our newest Time Out for Women presenters, Kris Belcher. Deeply personal and inspiring with just the right touch of humor, Kris bears testimony that although blind, her one great light is the Son. Unlike many books on the Atonement, the entire book follows the author’s greatest trial, blindness, and shows how it has helped her come to know how much she needs the Atonement in every aspect of her life. This book, filled with faith and hope, is a must-read for everyone.

How did the idea to write Hard Times and Holy Places begin?

I have often shared my story with fireside audiences, and was asked to write it for publication by Deseret Book Company.

How long did it take you to write it?

Three months- The process began in April of 2008 and my deadline was August 1st.  Only through the divine help of Father in Heaven was I able to complete the book in so short a time.

What was the most difficult part of the story to write?

Emotionally, it was very difficult to describe the heart-break, feelings of despair and hopelessness, as well as to remember all the pain of the year I went blind. Retelling very private experiences was draining for me and often I would have to stop writing to calm down. I felt very vulnerable as I shared myself so openly and hoped that in doing so, I would be able to help some one experiencing difficulties.

Which part was easiest?

The chapter on humor was the easiest to write. I laughed out loud as I remembered and recorded the funny things which have happened to me; however, it was difficult to choose from the many humorous experiences and embarrassing moments I have collected.

Did you have any special experiences while writing that you would like to share?

I can’t count the number of times I laid wide awake at night and prayed for direction in my writing. It seemed that each time I came to the end of an idea and didn’t know where to go next with the book; Heavenly Father opened my mind and led me. Also, during my writing, the Spirit taught me many truths, healed hidden wounds, and broadened my views of this life and my trials.

Because Hard Times and Holy Places is your first book and we are just getting to know you, will you tell us a little about yourself?

Being a mother is the best and hardest calling I’ve ever had, and my darling sons bring me many smiles, as well as many opportunities to pray for strength, patience, and charity. I love to learn the doctrines of Christ, and study the scriptures and words of living prophets. I love to take naps, eat yummy food, and laugh a lot. I love to listen to recorded books and hate to figure out what to cook for dinner.

What’s one random thing that not many people know about you?

In high school, I was a cheer leader, pom-pom girl and the school mascot (not all at once, of course).

If you could do any job beyond what you do now, what would it be?

I would definitely be a movie actress.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get the right body type for that job.  I’d love to have a radio show, though.
