Today I am studying the seven seals.... Here is what the Teacher's Manual says:

The following ... provides additional information about each of the seven seals. [It] may also be useful in understanding the structure of the book of Revelation. Note that events are listed chronologically, according to the time periods in which they occurred. They should not be confused with the dispensations of the gospel.

First seal (about 4000-3000 BC)

The creation and fall of Adam and Eve; the ministry of Enoch and the translation of his city into heaven (Revelation 6:1–2).

Second seal (about 3000-2000 BC)

Noah and the Flood (Revelation 6:3–4).

Third seal (about 2000-1000 BC)

Ministries of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses; the Exodus; the period of reign by judges (Revelation 6:5–6).

Fourth seal (about 1000BC-AD1)

The period of reign by kings; the division of the kingdom; the conquering of the kingdoms (Revelation 6:7–8).

Fifth seal (about AD 1 - AD 1000)

The birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ; the establishment of his Church and the ministry of the Apostles; martyrdom of the Apostles; the Apostasy (Revelation 6:9–11).

Sixth seal (about AD 1000- AD 2000)

Continuation of the Apostasy; restoration of the gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith; signs of the times manifest (Revelation 6:12–17; 7:1–8).

Seventh seal (about AD 2000 - AD 3000)

Wars, plagues, and desolation; Second Coming of the Lord (Revelation 8:1–19:21). Millennium of peace (Revelation 20:1–6). Satan loosed for a season, the last great battle, and the final judgment (Revelation 20:7–15).

After the seventh seal

The earth is celestialized (Revelation 21:1–22:6).

• Point out that the first five seals are covered in 11 verses, the sixth seal is covered in 14 verses, and the seventh seal is covered in 226 verses. What does this emphasis teach us?

You know... I'm just going through all of the information as I'm finding it and thinking - what a CRAZY week to teach my first Gospel Doctrine lesson ever. There's a TON of tricky stuff in here - YES, I know that Joseph Smith said, "The book of Revelation is one of the plainest books God ever caused to be written." But, let's face it - we all know Joseph Smith saw what John saw.... it's not that plain to me.

You?

OH - I am finding great info by reading through the articles posted on the byu broadcasting pages....

Whit!
I think Isaiah is plain, to my heart....not my head. But not Revelations. And I love John. So, yeah, I guess I agree...I would focus on the love stuff in there though because I'm not convinced anyone else really gets the rest of it.
Unless....like you said, they've "seen" it too.

As I was reading through the lesson, the quote from President Hinckley really jumped out at me.
(I tried to underline the parts that caught my attention, but I couldn't figure it out so I capitalized them. )

“That war, so bitter, so intense, has gone on, and it has never ceased. It is the war between TRUTH and ERROR, between AGENCY and COMPULSION, between the followers of Christ and those who have denied Him. His enemies have used every stratagem in that conflict. They’ve indulged in lying and deceit. They’ve employed money and wealth. They’ve tricked the minds of men. They’ve murdered and destroyed and engaged in every other unholy and impure practice to thwart the work of Christ. …

“[Opposition] has been felt in the undying efforts of many, both within and without the Church, to destroy faith, to belittle, to demean, to bear false witness, to tempt and allure and induce our people to practices inconsistent with the teachings and standards of this work of God. …

“The war goes on. It is waged across the world over the issues of agency and compulsion. It is waged by an army of missionaries over the issues of truth and error. IT IS WAGED IN OUR OWN LIVES, DAY IN AND DAY OUT, in our homes, in our work, in our school associations; it is waged OVER QUESTIONS OF LOVE AND RESPECT, of LOYALTY and FIDELITY, of OBEDIENCE and INTEGRITY. We are all involved in it” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1986, 55–58; or Ensign, Nov. 1986, 42, 44–45).

I thought the part about "agency verses compulsion" was really interesting. Compulsion is kind of like those times when your body is telling your spirit what to do. And agency is when your spirit is telling your body what to do. All in all. . my natural man side is really lazy. And selfish. It would just as soon lie around all day eating bon bons. It doesn't feel like making dinner. It crops us once in a while and gets grumpy when everybody needs me. My agency side loves people and wants to do things for them. And feels happy doing it. My day goes much better when I use agency to accomplish good things rather than giving in to compulsive feelings.

I just thought I'd list the scripture chain of hope and comfort from the book of revelation:

1) "If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."

2) "He that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."

3) "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away... I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son."

4) And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever."

5) "And whosoever will [come], let him take the water of life freely."

As I have worked on preparing this lesson this week the thoughts that keep coming into my mind are about preparation and optimism. There is a church video that hopefully I will be able to show called "Fortifying Your Family." It's 3:45 min. and it's one the first FHE video. It has been on my mind all week and so I'm going to show it. I think I'm going to have a picture of my family with an umbrella leaned up above it... then we'll talk about some of the "bad" things that will happen and then talk about what the umbrella represents.

I have loved the reading and the different supplements I have reviewed. It will be interesting to see where the class discussion goes - but I want to keep it along the lines of fortification and then the "hope and comfort" that will come through preparation and optimism.

As I have reviewed this lesson this morning I find that I am in a very reflective mood. It has been a wonderful year of studying the New Testament. I have learned so much and have often done some deep soul searching. I have to say a big thank you to Whit for all that she has done to make this thread happen. You have made a difference in my life and in how I have studied this year. "Be not weary in well doing." I am excited to be here on the earth at this time and I look forward with hope to the Second Coming of the Savior. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is true and we are all a part of the army in these last days. I have no need to fear with soliders like each of you at my side. Forward march!

Thank you, MamaL... I have LOVED doing this. I have learned SO much and it was a scary but wonderful experience today to cap off a year of study teaching in my Ward. I am not sure I did justice to the Book of Revelation - but I have learned SO much and felt the Spirit testify to me of the truthfulness of the gospel.

I LOVE the thought that one of the BYU scholars shared in this week's round table discussions... He talked about how the Bible begins with the fall. God said to Adam, "Because thou hast... eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life." Adam and Eve were cast out and were no longer able to walk with God.

Then, at the end of the Bible we have Revelation (yes, I know they're not in the order of when they were written - but there's probably a reason for the order, don't you think?). In 22:3-4 it says:

And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

I am so grateful for the Plan of Holiness... so grateful for the New Testament and other scripture that we have available to us.

Next Sunday is Joseph Smith's birthday. Today we had the lesson on him in RS. I've thought all day about how much modern revelation has helped with the BOOK of Revelation. AND, how it is because of the restoration that the Holy Ghost is again on the earth so that we have our own PERSONAL revelation...

Thank you sister for joining me in my journey. I look forward to next year's study of the Book of Mormon. Remember you can download your study guide now!!

This is a reminder that ALL BYU's scripture links for this year are now broken. However, if you go to http://byubnew.byu.edu/scriptures/ you can click whichever subject you want and find the episode you want. A pain, but it works. :)

bumping up for my copy/paste project. MAN, this is going to take some time. I've only worked through three lessons so far.

The new blog is:

http://scripturewhit.blogspot.com/

I have started in the New Testament. It makes me kinda sad... because we actually discussed the scriptures together for awhile. It's been awhile. I think the good thing about having to move the stuff over to a new site is it has renewed my desire to finish this project. I made it about 2.5 years before fizzling... time to catch up and keep going!!

Maybe we'll even start discussing again. :)
