Today as I was looking for my spiritual or motivational thought to add to this week's study, I found this talk (see above link) by Howard W. Hunter. It is on Commitment to God, and it gives several examples from the scriptures, mostly Old Testament, of individuals who said, as did Nephi, "I will go and do" whatever the Lord asked of them. President Hunter remarks that it is this kind of unwavering commitment to God that shows the kind of faith that the Lord loves. At the conclusion of this talk, President Hunter says: "There is good reason to make our decision now to serve the Lord. On this Sunday morning, when the complications and temptations of life are somewhat removed, and when we have the time and more of an inclination to take an eternal perspective, we can more clearly evaluate what will bring us the greatest happiness in life. We should decide now, in the light of the morning, how we will act when the darkness of night and when the storms of temptation arrive.
I pray that we will have the strength to decide now to do what we ought to do."
I think the difference between Nephi and his brothers Laman and Lemuel, was that Nephi had decided that he would serve the Lord "no matter what." Laman and Lemuel, on the other hand, would have periods of humility (which usually had to be beaten into them) but when things were not going well for them, they were quick to murmur. They had not made the commitment to "go and do;" they just wanted to "stay and complain." We have to make the same choices in our lives--we can choose to serve the Lord (cheerfully, without murmuring) or to stay behind murmuring (grumbling under our breath at how picked on we are).

Either the Book of Mormon is true, or it is false; either it came from God, or it was spawned in the infernal realms. It declares plainly that all men must accept it as pure scripture or they will lose their souls. It is not and cannot be simply another treatise on religion; it either came from heaven or hell. And it is time for all those who seek salvation to find out for themselves whether it is of the Lord or of Lucifer. (Bruce R. McConkie, C.R., October 1983, p. 1060

There is another great principle alluded to in 1 Nephi 2. I call it the “Recognition of the Real Problem” principle. So many times we go before the Lord asking for help solving a problem when we have not yet identified what the problem really is. For example, the Israelites wanted Moses to get rid of the poisonous serpents. (Numbers 21:7) But the serpents were not the problem. The problem was that the Israelites had not been willing to keep the promise they made at Mt. Sinai (see Exodus 24:3,7). The serpents were a reminder. Certain Jews wanted to make Christ a king, probably because he had the ability to solve any and all social problems. “When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.” (John 6:15) Jesus knew that the problems of the Jews were not social; they were spiritual, and he refused the throne.
Here in 1 Nephi 2, the Lord explains the relationship between the Nephites and the Lamanites. I wonder how many prayers were offered by Book of Mormon people pleading with the Lord to solve the problem of the Lamanites. But the Lamanites were never the problem. The scriptures teach it in this way:
And inasmuch as thou shalt keep my commandments, thou shalt be made a ruler and a teacher over thy brethren. For behold, in that day that they [the Lamanites] shall rebel against me, I will curse them even with a sore curse, and they shall have no power over thy seed except they [thy seed] shall rebel against me also. And if it so be that they [thy seed] rebel against me, they [the Lamanites] shall be a scourge unto thy seed, to stir them up in the ways of remembrance. (1 Nephi 2:22-24)
Hugh Nibley explained it this way:
No matter how wicked and ferocious and depraved the Lamanites might be (and they were that!), no matter by how much they outnumbered the Nephites, darkly closing in on all sides, no matter how insidiously they spied and intrigued and infiltrated and hatched their diabolical plots and breathed their bloody threats and pushed their formidable preparations for all out war, they were not the Nephite problem. They were merely kept there to remind the Nephites of their real problem, which was to walk uprightly before the Lord. (Since Cumorah, p. 376)
Our real problem IS walking uprightly before the Lord. So true that if we ARE, we have nothing to fear.

"If the Lord is to help us gain strength during our struggles, we must do the things He has counseled us to do. This involves turning to Him and applying certain principles of the gospel."
I prayed about this paragraph all week and I feel that this fits this weeks lesson because Lehi had to have deep faith to do as God had commanded and left all material thing behind and not knowing what the future held for him and his family, but he did what Heavenly Father asked of him. We all wish that we could do that. When things come our way that we struggle with, sometimes we get so frustrated that we can not hear what Heavenly Father is saying to us. He gives us struggles to learn and grow, but he is right beside us during them. I really believe that no matter what happend his will be done.

Someone said that above. Someone that had a handle starting with jpk
I am wondering what to do. I feel like I have turned to Him but He is telling me I am on my own for a little while. What to do here?
Is it okay to comment on the copy and paste things? I have been lurking for awhile and I notice some people copy and paste the links but they don't say how they feel or what they think about it or how it affects what they do moment to moment.

He must be trusting you!
"I notice some people copy and paste the links but they don't say how they feel or what they think about it or how it affects what they do moment to moment." - I think that sometimes there is time to post the thought that got us thinking and not enough time to post the thinking part. I'm just glad people are participating! :)

Or at least, I haven't the time often to do both. Paste my assignment AND type comments. And sometimes, I like to not share what I'm thinking until the thought has fully materialized. Perhaps then few of my thoughts fully ever do...

My favorite scripture as I was growing up was a common one – 1 Nephi 3:7. I remember the first time I ever read it during my own personal scripture study. I had such a strong emotional response as I felt Prophet Nephi’s courage and faith.
As I got older and my understanding of the gospel increased, I realized that I had held a misconception about Nephi’s words since childhood. For some reason, I had interpreted Nephi’s words to mean: God will never give us anything that we can’t handle. This is, of course, only partially true. God will never give us anything that we can’t handle with his help. As Nephi said so beautifully, “The Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them” (1 Nephi 3:7; emphasis added). Somehow, in years of reading and loving that scripture I had left out the most important part.
My oldest child came to this earth very independent. He rolled onto his side the day he was born and was running through the house by age ten months. He spent his childhood saying, “I can do it my own self.” So many times I feel like that spiritually. It has taken me awhile to understand that my relationship with God is that of a child, or dependant. One example of my independent nature was a reaction I had during a conference talk given by President Eyring. I was listening to his talk and when he said, “There will be times when you will feel overwhelmed. One of the ways you will be attacked is with the feeling that you are inadequate.” I thought in my mind that his next words would be something like, “But you are not inadequate.” The next words out of his mouth, however, were, “Well, you are inadequate…” What?! I was startled by this. Then he continued… “…You are inadequate… with only your own powers. But you have access to more than your natural capacities, and you do not work alone” (Rise to Your Call, October Conference, 2002; emphasis added).
Nephi understood that he did not work alone and he never hesitated to access the power from God. Nephi was obedient, courageous and faithful. One of his first recorded tests of faith came when he and his brothers returned to Jerusalem for the brass plates. He was robbed. His life was threatened. His own brothers beat him. But still he went and did as the Lord had commanded him. And then his test to get the plates became even more difficult. He was commanded by the Spirit to kill Laban. Nephi says he, “shrunk and would that [he] might not slay him.” But when commanded a second time he “did obey the voice of the Spirit.” Nephi’s mother, Sariah recognized that it was the power of God by which her sons were spared. She said, “I… know of a surety that the Lord hath protected my sons, and delivered them out of the hands of Laban, and given them power whereby they could accomplish the thing which the Lord hath commanded them.”

So thanks Whit, for helping me see I am not entirely off my rocker...or if I am, you are too!
I don't "get" my life right now. In fact I am completely befuzzled by it. But like so many here have reminded me, I just need to move forward with what I do know and trust God to take care of the rest.
