I attended with my sister, and my daughters ages 18 and 20. We also were in a group of ladies from my home ward. We had 11 of us total. We drove from the Bay Area, and we had an absolutely MARVELOUS TIME!!
Coming home, we were able to debrief each-other and talk about what we learned and heard. My girls and I have been changed FOREVER by the story of Mariam Kallon!! We have vowed to never complain about our lives, as we compare what she endured, and what she had to do to have the gospel of Jesus Christ in her life!! We are better, stronger and smarter because of our experience at T O F W!!!! WE LOVED IT!!

TOFW has been something i have been attending for several years and have always LOVED it! I have felt spiritually uplifted. I had been looking forward to going as last year i was unable to attend due to being out of the country, so i was excited. Until the week of the event. Our family is going thru our own personal trials as a loved brother is suffering from a terminal brain tumor. for the past year and a half, he has done remarkable well, and has outlived the life expectancy of this type of tumor. However, the week of the event, his good luck had changed and the last MRI showed his tumor was growing. Needless to say, once i remembered that the event was just a day or so away, I no longer wanted to go. I just didn't have the excitement or desire. But my husband knows how much I love these events and encouraged me to go. Reluctantly, I did go. I'm SO glad i went. As difficult as it was to hear some of the messages. Ardeth Kapp was wonderful to listen to and it was at one point that she said she felt inspired to say that there are trials and struggles,(I cant remember the exact words now!), but essentially the words were to the effect that she felt there were those in the audience who needed the messages of Hope in the trials they are going thru. She stated 'we have reason to Hope' That began what to the tears flowing. She talked about how hope is 'reflected in one's life' . Hers was the message i, apparently, came to hear... Listening to Jenny Oaks so beautifully play her violin only continued the tears. I will say that John Bytheway provided a GREAT comedic relief and I would have LOVED to have listened to him the rest of the night and into the next day! The next morning was also very enjoyable as I listened to Emily Watts, things began again and by the first break, i could no longer keep it together and I lost all control of my emotions. After i got control and then heard Mariama Kallon's story, i realized that as difficult as things are and will be in our family right now, they are NOTHING compared to Mariama's experiences. I learned that thru Emily Freeman, I can still see the GOOD Days. that having HOPE isn't about his survival anymore, but remembering to turn to the Lord. Thank you so much for providing wonderful events. I always gain strength from them.

Survivor of war-torn Sierra Leone, humanitarian beneficiary; LDS convert and public speaker; attended LDS Business College
Raised in war-torn Sierra Leone, Mariama Kallon saw many things as a young girl that might fill a person with fear and hatred. Soon after witnessing the violent murders of parents and siblings and spending her youth fleeing from rebels, she was introduced to the gospel of Jesus Christ and found hope in God and peace in a knowledge of eternal families. She was given a humanitarian kit by the Church, which became a treasured symbol of hope that she used to bless the lives of many as they again fled for their lives. After returning to her town, she was called on a mission to the Salt Lake City Temple Square Mission, and wept in gratitude to the Lord as she visited the place where her precious humanitarian kit was made. Today Mariama stands as an example of the divine purposes of humanitarian work and tells her story to numerous audiences, urging them to participate in this work.
