Why did you decide to create your own eReader application?
Because Deseret Book understands our customer's values, we felt it was necessary to release an application that would enhance gospel study in ways other eReaders could not match. Specifically, we have added one of the strongest search features available, allowing you to search within a book or across your entire eBook library. Bookshelf eBooks also feature embedded scripture verses so that the full context can be viewed with a single tap. We hope that the Deseret Bookshelf app provides quality eBooks that build faith, strengthen homes and families, ennoble personal virtues, and offer practical advice.
What devices support the Deseret Bookshelf App?
There are several different ways you can read eBooks from Deseret Book:
The free Deseret Bookshelf app can be found in the App Store by searching 'Deseret Bookshelf' on your Apple device (iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone)
Or use the web-based version of Bookshelf that can be read on any device with an Internet connection and a web-browser (tablets, desktops, laptops, Kindle Fire, Nook, phones, etc). To access and read your eBook, please visit: read.deseretbook.com The Bookshelf web-reader works best using the following browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, or up to date versions of Internet Explorer.
When I'm logging in, how do I know if I have a DeseretBook.com account?
This would be the same email address and password you may have used to order from Deseret Book online. If you have not registered previously, you may use the 'Create Account' prompts from within the app. Should an error message appear stating that an account has already been created, tap the Forgot Password? option to have your password reset.
What are all these eBooks that showed up in my account that I did not order?
Our Deseret Bookshelf app comes with 8 free eBook classics: Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jesus the Christ, Discourses of Brigham Young, History of Joseph Smith by His Mother, Lectures on Faith, Gospel Doctrine, the Miracle of Forgiveness, and the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt and the entire Standard Works. If you don't want those books taking up space on your device, then you can press and hold down on the book cover and then select “Archive” which will remove it from the device’s memory.
I have purchased an eBook, how do I download it into the application?
eBooks are ready to download into your library immediately after purchase, but may require you to log out and log back into the app. To do this, select the gear/settings icon and tap the logout prompt. You will then be taken to the login page. Verify that you are logging into the application with the same email address that you used for the purchase. After logging in, your eBook purchase should begin to download into your library.
An eBook has been downloaded, but there are missing or duplicate pages. How can I correct this? OR how may I remove a title from appearing in my library of current titles?
Archiving an eBook will remove the current version of the eBook so that you may re-download the newest version into your library, which often fixes the errors. Please note that on app versions prior to Bookshelf 2.0 archiving an eBook also removes any personalized content (bookmarks, highlights, notes).
To archive an eBook return to your Deseret Bookshelf main library (where you can see all the eBook covers), hold your finger on the eBook you would like to correct. A pop-up window will appear with several options. Selecting the archive (or the arrow pointing down into the Filing cabinet icon) will remove the eBook from your library.
To unarchive an eBook, or download the eBook again, find the eBook in the section of the main library called eBooks in the Cloud and tap the cover and it will re-download. In app versions prior to Bookshelf 2.0 you will need to tap the 'Showing Current'prompt from the bottom middle of the screen. This will take you to all your archived books. Tap the eBook cover and it will automatically start to re-download the eBook back into your current library.
If content errors still appear, then please email email@example.com, and our eBooks team will get look into getting the error fixed.
While reading an eBook, how do I change my reading preferences like font, size, brightness, and reading mode?
While reading an eBook, tap the middle of any page to bring up additional options and icons. In Bookshelf 2.0 the Settings (gear icon) is in the upper right-hand corner. In 1.x versions the icon is in the lower right-hand corner. Version 2.0 and onward has the additional options of controlling the line spacing and background page color including Night reading mode. Also note that the current Android version only has the scroll/chapter reading mode and not a pages mode.
How do I make a highlight or a note within an eBook?
Press and hold your finger on one of the words you would like to highlight or make a note about. The text bars will then appear on your device. You may then adjust the line dividers to select the portion of text you wish to highlight or make a note about. You then choose from 10 different highlighting or underlining colors. Later you can tap on the highlights/notes icon in the left-hand study pane to quickly read through all your highlights or notes across your entire library
Billing & Account Questions
How do I apply Platinum Reward Points or Gift cards to an eBook purchase?
If you wish to use Platinum Reward Points or Gift Cards towards eBook purchases you will need to open a web browser and navigate on your device or computer to the full deseretbook.com website. You can then tap on eBooks in the top menu and do your shopping there. When you tap the Buy Now button you will be taken to the Digital Checkout page where you can enter your gift card number and then tap the green triangle button next to it to apply them.
If you are a platinum member, then there should be a second box showing your platinum points balance. If that is not showing up you will need to navigate to go to the Platinum Portal and enter your Platinum rewards number from a receipts or catalog and that will link your Platinum to your email account. If you need further assistance, then call customer service at 1-888-846-7302.
Can I use an online coupon or promo code for eBook purchases?
Coupons or other promotional discounts are not valid for digital download purchases at this time. However Bookshelf sends promotional emails highlighting special 48-hour sales. These emails frequently offer exclusive pricing on best-selling bundled sets, newly released eBooks, or available free titles. We do expect digital coupons to be released as a feature in mid-2014.
How can I change my account's billing address, credit card, email address, or password?
Account changes may be made directly from deseretbook.com by logging into your account and selecting the requested action from the left-hand side.
How can I gift a Bookshelf eBook to someone?
We currently do not have a native way within Bookshelf to gift eBooks. We hope to have this by mid-2014. But, we do have some workarounds that may help you. You can purchase a Deseret Book Gift Card for the person and then tell them you wanted to get them a certain eBook. And they can use the gift card to pay for the eBook online.
Another option is that if you would like to buy a print book/eBook combo then you can keep the print version and gift the eBook for just $4.99 more. Unfortunately we only this option programmed for 40+ of our titles so far, but we are hoping to expand the selection in 2014.
A last option is if your friend already uses Amazon's Kindle App, you can buy most of our eBooks through the Kindle Store and you are able to gift those very easily.
Why do I need to enter credit card information to get a free e-book?
Credit and debit cards are required to be on file to purchase eBooks from the major online stores. One option is to buy and use a VISA gift card as the credit card you enter. The idea is to make it very convenient for you to come back and make purchases on your device even if your wallet is not handy. The good thing is that we offer over 200 free eBooks so once you are in, you get a lot of benefit! We also have hundreds of books under $3.99.
How do I find all your free and low-priced eBooks?
Pressing on the shopping cart icon in the app will take you to Bookshelf.deseretbook.com where you can go the search box and leave it blank and hit the search button and it will find all 2,700 of our eBooks. You can then go to the left hand side and put a checkmark in 'Free' or '.99-$4.99' and you should see the books.
You can also shop for eBooks on deseretbook.com by going to the top menu and clicking on eBooks. Then on above the search results click to sort it by 'Lowest Price' and you will see all the eBooks starting with those that are free.
How many people can share a Bookshelf account?
As long as you are in the same household (somebody that you could claim as a dependent on your tax return) then you can share and log in with the same Bookshelf account on any as many devices as you own.
Can my spouse and I have our bookshelf accounts merged together?
If you are family living under the same roof (and could claim each other as dependents), we can combine your two accounts into one. If only one of you has any additional eBooks purchased beyond the 9 standard free eBooks, then there is no need to merge the accounts. The 9 free standard titles are: Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jesus the Christ, Discourses of Brigham Young, History of Joseph Smith by His Mother, Lectures on Faith, Gospel Doctrine, the Miracle of Forgiveness, and the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt and the entire Standard Works. If you have additional purchased eBooks, then let us know the two accounts and which one you want to be the master one. We will not be able to merge your personalizations: highlights, notes, bookmarks, etc, but I can get your eBook libraries the same.
My spouse purchased an eBook under her email account. How can I get it to show up also under my Bookshelf account also?
eBooks purchased can only be used by one email address. So you can keep separate libraries, or if you would like we can merge your two libraries together but going forward you will need to just use a shared email address for logging in and purchasing for the Deseret Bookshelf app. You can use the same email account on as many devices as you have in your household, but again, it needs to be the same. If you would like your accounts merged, then email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and be sure to include both email addresses.
How do I change the account that my Bookshelf app is associated with?
The Bookshelf app can log into any Bookshelf account that you have the credentials to. Simply tap Settings (Gear icon) and then log out and then log in with another other account.
If you are interested in changing your email address to something else, then that takes a few more steps. If you have not downloaded any eBooks beyond the 9 free, then there is no need to change the email address, you can just use the Create Account option on the log on screen to create a new account with a new email address.
If you have past paid purchases that you want to bring over and create a new account, then you can log into DeseretBook.com by clicking on My Account at the top right and signing into your old email account. Then click on Email and Password on the left. You can then set your new email account and password. And it should carry over your purchase history.
If you already have two existing Bookshelf accounts that you would like merged together then send us an email at email@example.com and include both email addresses and we can get them combined for you.
How do I get the Deseret Bookshelf application on my Apple device?
The free Deseret Bookshelf application is available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch through the App Store. Begin by opening the App Store and use the search box by entering the keywords: Deseret Bookshelf. Our app will appear and you may tap the 'free' icon to begin the download process. You will then be prompted to enter in your Apple ID and password, and the application will begin installing.
My purchase doesn’t seem to be downloading to my apple device
These are the order of operations for fixing almost all problems with the Bookshelf app on apple devices.
1. Make sure that the email address that you purchased the eBooks under is the same email address that you are using for Bookshelf, or they will not sync up. To check which email account you logged in under you can go to Settings – Logout and then enter the same email address and log back in. This will fix a lot of difficulties in books and the app.
2. If an eBook is coming up without a cover or without all the chapters, then archiving an eBook will remove the current version of the eBook so that you may re-download the newest version into your library, which often fixes the errors. Press and hold your finger on the eBook in question and a pop-up window will appear with several options. Selecting archive (or the arrow pointing down into the Filing cabinet icon) will remove the eBook from your library. To unarchive an eBook, or download the eBook again, find the eBook in the section of the main library called eBooks in the Cloud and tap the cover and it will re-download. In app versions prior to Bookshelf 2.0 you will need to tap the 'Showing Current' prompt from the bottom middle of the screen. This will take you to all your archived books. Tap the eBook cover and it will automatically start to re-download the eBook back into your current library.
3. If it is still not working, then you can a special force quit and restart of the app. You do that by opening the app and then pressing the top power button for 5 seconds until the Power-down screen appears. You then let go and then press and hold the home button for 10 seconds (the power-down screen goes away after a few seconds and the the app comes up for a second and then it force closes). You then reopen the app (iOS 6) or it will often automatically reopen itself if your device is running iOS7.
4. Another thing to try is force restarting your phone. You can do that by holding down both the top power button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until after the screen goes black and the silver apple pops up again, then let go.
5. If that doesn't work, then you can either email customer service at firstname.lastname@example.org or you will need to uninstall the app and then reinstall by finding it in the Apple App store. This is kind of the last resort since if you are not on Bookshelf version 2.0 or higher (which requires iOS 7) you will lose all your personalizations in the app that are not synced: highlight, notes, and bookmarks. But this will fix the super hard and strange problems that some devices get in.
How do I get the Deseret Bookshelf Application on my Android device?
Deseret Bookshelf is available as a free download through the Google Play Store. To install, navigate to the Google Play application on your Android device. From the upper-right hand corner, enter the following keywords into search bar: Deseret Bookshelf. Tap on the 'Free'icon to begin installation. You will then be prompted to login with your Google Play account. The application will then begin installing.
I can’t get the highlights to stay when I make them on my Android device
We are aware that certain Android devices are having trouble getting highlights to stay when they are made or when they overlap two different pages/screens. We are looking for a new Android developer to help rebuild our app this year and get this bug fixed. Until that time, we apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
The Bookshelf app doesn't appear to be usable at all on my Android device
To be honest, there are so many thousands of types of Android devices and several different operating systems that not all app functions work on all devices. Another option is if your device has an internet connection you can buy and read eBooks at read.deseretbook.com. You can log into that website for free and try reading some of our sample eBooks on there. It works best with the following browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, or up to date versions of Internet Explorer.
