The Atonement of Jesus Christ is—and should be—at the very center of all we teach. Everything else is peripheral. Everything else is either connected to this central, saving truth or it has no power to bless or change us. It is vital that we understand that through this singular act by our loving Lord, we can be reawakened, redeemed, reclaimed, and restored when we fall short or wander off the gospel path. At the same time, we must recognize that although the Lord’s Atonement is at the heart of God’s plan, we cannot and should not attribute everything good that happens in our lives to that Atonement. Both the first and third members of the Godhead have a myriad of ways in which They too bless the children of our Father in Heaven.
In The Atoning One, acclaimed author and experienced educator Robert L. Millet describes the mystery and majesty of who Jesus Christ is; His singular saving role in the plan of salvation; how the Father and the Holy Ghost are inextricably linked with Christ in the redemption of humankind; and how members of the Church can come to comprehend and rely upon divine grace. As Brother Millet teaches, we rejoice in the fact that Latter-day Saints are now more Christ-centered and Atonement-centered than ever before, but we must ensure that how we talk about and approach our Savior’s offering is done with care. This book provides insightful guidance for deepening your understanding and appreciation of the Savior’s ultimate gift.

Robert's understanding and insight into the scriptures pulls all of the Standard Works and talks from many of the Prophets into one amazing book that will help many people understand what has been, and what will be done for them; this book needs to be read by members and non-members alike and maybe people will start show more love and kindness towards each other.
I loved this book. I learned so much about my Savior. I originally checked it out of the library but upon starting it I knew I would want to read it again and again. I highly recommend this book. It is a must have for your personal library.
I found the book to be informative and inspirational. As I read and pondered better definition and insight were obtained to better understand the atonement. I am happy to recommend this book to others.
After reading several books by Bro. Millet I found this book a most complete in detail and inspiration. I have listened to it on CD, and read through the chapters again in the book. I have found more insight and detail in this book than any other written by Bro. Millet. Don't get me wrong the other books have greatly increased my understanding and knowledge on the gospel, however "The Atoning One" provided a more complete understanding of the Savior and his mission and how we fit into that mission. I have been blessed by the reading of and my testimony of the Savior has grown immensely. If you want a complete understanding of grace and how important it is for us to accept it and then go about doing good which shows our love of God and our fellowmen then read this it will expand you in ways no other book I have read has done, except the scriptures.
Robert L. Millet has done much to help all of our Father's children better understand the significance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, it's strength, blessing, and eternal significance in all of our lives. What a marvelous gift from our Father in Heaven, to have devised a plan, with the support and willingness of the Savior, to enable all to return to their presence. His discussion of the Fall of Adam, and how we differ from the christian world as a whole, brings to us an understanding that provides great insight into this doctrinal aspect of the gospel that further helps us understand and grasp the love of God. There is such a major difference between a transgression and sin, a difference so important to all. Unique quotes and teachings not well known are also shared through this marvelous book. Thank you Brother Millet for your efforts to share this book with us!
If you want to better understand the doctrines of the Creation, the Fall and the Atonement of Jesus Christ then you will want to read this book. Robert Millet says, “We know that the Creation, the Fall, and the Savior’s Atonement represent one grand doctrinal package.” And, “The doctrine of the Church has not changed, but we as a people are placing greater emphasis on these plain and precious, even liberating truths.”
I love how this book explains these doctrines in an easy to read and understand manner.
The author has also added clarity to the hard to grasp dogma of Jesus Christ as the Father and the Son.
My Temple worship has also been enhanced by reading this book and applying its teachings.
Written in an easy to read, conversational style, this engaging book discusses the most significant doctrine of the church -- the atoning sacrifice of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Stories and personal experiences clarify , expand and explain all aspects of the Savior's sacrifice to make them more easily understandable. Brother Millet's life long study of the Savior has helped him gain precious insights and perspectives which he shares eagerly with the reader. I especially enjoyed his discussions on the interconnected nature of the Creation, the Fall and the Atonement.
This book was much easier to read and understand than I had anticipated. I received answers to some questions I had and gained a deeper understanding and love for my Savior and His atoning sacrifice.
I made a goal to center my life more fully on Christ this year. This book was perfect for helping me with that goal, and I'm so grateful for the things I learned. I loved that the scriptures were such an integral part of the writing. All the truths shared were introduced and followed up with scriptures that testified of Christ and his mission. My relationship with the Savior was enhanced and my love for Him was deepened through reading this book.
Yet again, Robert Millet has written of the Life of the Savior in such a way which one can feel like you are in a face to face discussion with the author. The depth of the material, scripture references and sources allows the reader to go along on this journey to better understand the Atonement and the impact of the Savior's love for us, individually. I found myself, as I have with Robert Millet's previous work, stopping and pondering and reflecting before I moved on to the next section. Definitely a book to have on your shelves and a perfect read as the Easter season approaches.
This beautifully written book is readable, relatable, and encouraging. The author's writing style is engaging and easy to follow The truths he shares have helped me gain a better understanding of how "deeply personal the Atonement" is for each individual. Having reading it, I feel a greater sense of love and gratitude for the Savior and I feel more hope for my own peace and happiness.
It was interesting to me as I read the book that the author focused on the doctrine of the atonement of Jesus Christ from the New Testament perspective and then rounded out and clarified with scriptures from the Book of Mormon or Doctrine and Covenants and words of latter day prophets. It is as as if we are just looking at the doctrine from the opposite side of more common approaches.
He compare and contrast of what Latter-day Saints view and what other Christian religions view gave a unique view that I personally feel will help anyone who was born and raised in the Church be able to understand and better communicate doctrine with people outside our faith.
The format is simple to read, and allows good direction for individuals to turn to the scriptures to improve their own testimony of Jesus Christ.
The author has spent his life in pursuit of an understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and Grace. I loved the personal stories he shared as well as the research and beliefs of theologians of other religions. It was interesting to learn how other religions view the Atonement. The author answered many questions for me such as, "Why did the Savior pray to His father both before and after his resurrection and atonement." He encouraged me to try to be obedient but in "a new way, a less worried way." The words that he recorded while in Israel, preparing to take a group to tour the Church of the Nativity were beautiful and will stay with me a long time.
Very well written. The content was refreshing with new insights and ideas from different perspectives. I loved the sacredness and care that were used when writing of Jeses Christ and the Atonement. Deeper appreciation, clear understanding, and the magnitude of Heavenly Father's love for each of us individually was realized again.
