Essential reading, made easier

Talmage's writing are classic doctrine that can benefit every member, but a little intense for the average person. This tome of Jesus the Christ has been too overwhelming for me to start. This book starts off explaining Talmage's history and contributions. His educational background, and the vast amount of work he produced in a lifetime is amazing (along with all the jobs he held, including General Authority work).

After that introduction, the book is divided into various subjects, in a logical order, with subheadings of 1-2 page sections. This makes it so doable! I just read a section or two at a time, highlight my favorite parts, and put it away until the next day. There is a gentle Spirit of truth that comes across in his writings. He is accurate, descriptive and detailed. And because of the way it's written, you could use it as a reference (whether or not you read the whole thing first.) Reading Talmage's words has blessed and enriched my life. Thank you for putting this together!

I've always wanted to read Talmage!

I've always wanted to read Talmage but it's been too overwhelming! Until now! Instead of Talmage's full books this handy reference guide is made up of excerpts from his writings arranged topically. With an introduction giving the reader some info behind the writings of Talmage and a great Life Sketch section that gives you some interesting historical data behind the man himself this new book has a common sense approach to reading Talmage.

Sections/chapters are:
1. The Plan of Salvation
2. The Godhead
3. Jesus the Christ
4. The Atonement of Jesus Christ
5. Mortal Probation
6. Satan is an enemy to God and Man
7. The Dispensation of the Fulness of Times
8. Church Government
9. Principles and Ordinances of the Gospel
10. Missionary Work
11. Scriptures
12. Responsibility of the Covenant People

Each chapter has pulled references from the Articles of Faith, Conference Reports, The Great Apostasy, The House of the Lord, Jesus the Christ, The Parables of James E. Talmage, The Story and Philosphy of Mormonism, and The Vitality of Mormonism.

Each reference gives a subject heading to help the beginner like me have a better idea of what subject in that section I am reading about. Voila!

The actual writings of Talmage have not been diluted in any way...the book has just been rearranged to allow for easier study!

Wonderful reference!

James E. Talmage was a well-known LDS gospel scholar and apostle. His books such as Jesus the Christ, Articles of Faith, and The Great Apostasy are some of the definitive works on LDS doctrine. They do not of course take the place of the scriptures but provide a lot of insight into LDS beliefs. But Talmage's works can be a bit intimidating thus this book presents selections from Talmage's books and general conference talks to provide an introduction to his work.

The selections are divided up by category: Plan of Salvation, The Godhead, Jesus the Christ, The Atonement and more. Stephens has done a nice job choosing selections that explain various LDS doctrines in an understandable way. A great reference for those who want a deeper understanding of gospel doctrines. A wonderful book full of insights and explanations about important doctrines. Highly recommended.

Talmage = the GOOD STUFF!!!

Jesus The Christ
Articles of Faith
The House of the Lord
The Great Apostasy
The Story and Philosophy of "Mormonism"

These are just a few. And the first two listed here accompany every missionary into the mission field. These books are excellent.

So when I discovered that A Beginner's Guide to TALMAGE includes important excerpts of his writings from these books and speeches that he gave I was elated to get my hands on it. James E. Talmage has a way of expounding and teaching doctrine in a way that most are able to understand and yet it stretches their capacity to understand.

In this new book, Dr. Calvin R. Stephens arranges the teachings and writings of Talmage into sections that make searching his teachings so useful and helpful. For instance, just the first section, PLAN OF SALVATION, is broken down into Pre-Earth life, Creation, The Fall, Marriage, Atonement, Perfection, Salvation Offered to the Dead, Resurrection, Judgement, Kingdoms of Glory, & Kingdom Presented to the Father. And that is just the first section.

I think that this is an extremely useful reference tool. My brain and spirit are bursting with excitement over the gems I've discovered so far in this book.

One of my favorite quotes in the book so far is this one on the Godhead...

"God Is Omnipresent. There is no part of creation, however remote, into which God cannot penetrate; through the medium of the Spirit the Godhead is in direct communication with all things at all times."

I think this is a great book for every LDS library.
