Bruce R. McConkie has been the ultimate scriptorian in my lifetime, I feel. As a CES teacher, his emphasis on going to the source (the scriptures) to know and teach doctrine has shaped my study and my teaching. His son, the author of this biography, is someone else I watch, listen to, and whose books I read because he is the acorn didn't fall far from the tree. So, to read this book on Bruce R. McConkie, by Joseph Fielding McConkie, was such a treat! The glimpse into the private life and the essence of this great man was like manna to my soul! I know this will be one of the few books that I will re-read and that my family will grow tired of hearing about!
I've always appreciated the contributions of Bruce R. McConkie, the writer, but this biography helped me to know and appreciate him as a man, as well as a giant of gospel scholarship and spiritual living. I appreciated the outstanding writing and the insight into various incidents touching his life that I was able to gain. I enjoyed this book immensely and recommend it very highly.
This may be the finest biography we have of a church leader. Joseph McConkie skillfully weaves a story of his father that manages to be objective, yet affectionate. He stresses his father's spirituality and strength while letting the human side shine through. This is the story of a most remarkable man written by a remarkable son. I recommend this to every faithful member of the church.
A spectacular book. Again and again Joseph McConkie demonstraites that he is not only one of the most doctrinally sound scholars in the church but also that he is a truely great writer. If his name is on the dust jacket you simply can't go wrong.
This book is excellent! I have always admired Bruce R. McConkie all my life and the knowlege this man had, was just incredible! This book told of what a special man he truly was and how he gave his all for the Lords work. , He practiced what he preached. He had a message to tell the world and he did that all his life. I would recommend this book to anyone. I didn't want to put the book down. And as I read it, I felt so good inside. , The last part of his life, he kept going. I cried at the end because of how important it was to him to give his last conference talk and tell the world about his testimony. , His son Joseph did a remarkable job in telling about his father and I'm grateful to the family for sharing that with all of us.
This is one book that I could not put down. I read it with every available moment that I had. What a wonderful inspiration was Bruce R. McConkie. Joseph has written one of the best biographies that I have ever read. I now long to read every sermon that Elder McConkie has ever delivered.
