Product Description

The story of Christopher Columbus has become so enshrouded in myth over the centuries, and so distorted by political correctness in recent decades, that the facts of his life remain largely a mystery to all but a handful of scholars.

And yet, author Clark B. Hinckley reminds us, the Book of Mormon prophet Nephi suggests that Columbus stands out as "a man among the Gentiles." In fact, Lehi and Nephi describe only two specific individuals in their prophecy of the latter-day restoration of the gospel: Christopher Columbus and Joseph Smith.

Columbus himself wrote that he was inspired by the Holy Ghost to undertake his great voyage of discovery; a claim some historians struggle to accept. But this candid and revealing look at the life of Christopher Columbus shows us a man with a great dream.

Through research into original Spanish texts and accounts written in Columbus's own hand, the author retraces the journeys of this dedicated explorer to uncover what may be the most remarkable aspect of Columbus's life: the degree to which he understood his prophetic mission and his place in history.

A great book!

This book was great! In today’s world, Columbus is painted as an almost villain for what happened in the new world.

This book shed a light on him that most modern biographies of him over look. I loved hearing how religious he was in life. How he credited all he did to God.

A great book, backed by research and the author does a great job at linking to the resources he used.

Everyone should read it.

I believe the book Christopher Columbus is the best history that I've ever
read. It is so well written, so completely documented, and so truthful.
Everyone should read it. We should never apologize for the miracle
Columbus was a part of, nor for his acknowledgement of the Spirit in his life.
A million thanks to Bro. Hinckley for his timely and thought-provoking

This book is FASCINATING!

As "author Clark B. Hinckley reminds us, the Book of Mormon prophet Nephi suggests that Columbus stands out as "a man among the Gentiles." In fact, Lehi and Nephi describe only two specific individuals in their prophecy of the latter-day restoration of the gospel: Christopher Columbus and Joseph Smith."

So if Joseph Smith's name is had for good and evil, does it surprise you that Christopher Columbus has been brought into question?

This book clearly shows through his own journals that Christopher Columbus felt inspired by the Holy Ghost.

He felt prompted to sail the seas and bring the truth to the new world.

You will read of:

* His struggles in getting the sailing approved

* His preparations

* His first crossing and then his subsequent crossings

* His shipwreck

* His health issues

* And more

I learned more than I ever had through this book.
I was very intrigued by the name Christopher and how it came to be and what it truly means.

We owe a lot to Christopher Columbus.

Expertly written!
Precisely presented!

This book was fantastic! I didn't know much about Columbus when I started except for what I was taught in school when I was young. IWhen I read the summary for this book, I felt drawn to it so when it came, I settled in to read.

I like that the author didn't whitewash anything. He shares the good and the bad. Columbus made mistakes (don't we all?) and put his trust in the wrong people at times. He was betrayed several times and the mistreatment of Indians didn't come at his hands, but at others who ignored his counsel. He was a man of God and wanted to share Christianity with the Indians, not harm them.

If you're looking for the spiritual side of Christopher Columbus's journeys, this is a great book that you will enjoy reading! It is heavy at times, but I was taken in with the way the author described what was happening so I found it easier to read than I originally thought I would. When I finished, I felt that I had a greater understanding and love for him than I did when I first started and look forward to reading it again!

Inspiring, a captivating read!

Brother Hinckley has done a masterful job in bringing to life one of the most influencial men of accomplishment in the history of the earth. I have always appreciated Christopher Columbus for what he had done, however I was never aware of the tremendous adversity and the undaunting spirit of a man that would never give up. He was inspired and focused upon his mission to discover new trade routes to the Far East that would bring attention, money and Christianity to Spain and the Lord in building his kingdom here upon the earth. He would not be denied because he was certain of his mission and felt heavens direction and guidance throughout his life. My life has been enriched because of what I have learned and felt in this great read. I would recommend it to any who would appreciate seeing the hand of the Lord in the life of this great explorer. It was truely inspiring!!!

Great history, great biography and great testimony
By , Submitted on 2015-02-25

This book is first of all an excellent brief history of Columbus. You finish feeling like you've been tutored by an objective and expert source on all of the key elements of Columbus's life. It reveals both the heart of Christopher Columbus and the honest shortcomings that have left him vulnerable to criticism. On both counts you discover a man who you recognize, admire, sympathize with and want to stand up and cheer for. The book touches on and concludes with how Columbus fits into the larger gospel narrative from a uniquely LDS perspective. It is great history, great biography and a great testimony of Columbus's special calling in the unfolding of God's plan.
