Product Description

Ordained as an apostle in 1906, David O. McKay served as president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1951 until his death in 1970. Under his leadership, the church experienced unparalleled growth, nearly tripling in total membership and becoming a significant presence throughout the world.

The first book to draw upon the David O. McKay Papers at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah--in addition to some two hundred interviews conducted by the authors--David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism focuses primarily on the years of McKay's presidency. During some of the most turbulent times in American and world history, McKay navigated the church through uncharted waters as it faced the challenges of worldwide growth in an age of communism, the civil rights movement, and ecumenism. Gregory Prince and Robert Wright have compiled a thorough history of the presidency of a much-loved prophet who left a lasting legacy within the LDS Church.

Excellent for giving the workings of the Church at the highest level on difficult problems. Also very informative about how these problems were resolved.

Very well written

This is an excellent work. It shows how Pres. Mckay and others reacted to social issues and problems as they existed in America at the time. In addition it shows what some of the main issues the church faced then. It was very interesting to see the devotion and love the brethren have for the work of building the kingdom. I would recommend the work to anyone.

Most comprehensive account

This book is the most comprehensive account of a modern day prophet I have come across. It is extremely detailed, complete and revealing of the issues at hand. As you read it, you can sense that very little has been glossed over for the sake of publishing. , Highly recommended!

Superb documentation and exposition of David O. McKay's ministry

This is the definitive exposition of David O. McKay's presidency, the only prophet most of us in the 'baby boom' culture of post World War II ever knew growing up. The 'turbulence' of the times inside and outside the Church is thoroughly documented, which may disturb some readers not familiar with the period, paving the way over time for the unprecedented harmony and unity we witness in the leadership and membership of the Church today. This book is a masterpiece!
