The End Begins: Sudden Darkness
"Brothers and sisters, may I have your attention," President Green said into the megaphone. I held my breath. What would he say next? At that moment, I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd said the moon was scheduled to turn to blood next Tuesday night. "As you know, alarming events are unfolding. People are scared and confused. Life as we have known it will never be the same, it seems."
The news has been filled with stories of tragedy and turmoil. But world events like the recent bombings in London seem far removed from eighteen-year-old Amelie Hatch's quiet life in Zillah, Washington. She's content with the predictable pattern of her life—school, friends, work. But when Amelie's father leaves on a mysterious Church assignment, concerns escalate as the family is left with few answers.
Then, in the span of moments, Amelie's world erupts in chaos. Terrorists have attacked the US power grid. There is no electricity. Vehicles have ceased working. The nuclear facility at nearby Hanford is compromised, and radiation may be flooding the area. Without the guidance of their father, Amelie's family faces a monumental task at the request of the leaders of the Church: members of their stake have been asked to walk to zUtah, where they will find safety in Zion.
Fleeing her home and the life she knows, Amelie sets off on the arduous journey toward the refuge of Utah. There is danger around every corner as the group faces gunfire, kidnapping, and new terrorist threats. And as she finds herself drawn to two very different men, Amelie recognizes a more personal peril—she's in danger of losing her heart.

Margot Hovley’s debut novel, Sudden Darkness, is a gripping story of a young girl, Amélie, caught in a world of terror and uncertainty. Since radiation is leaking from a nearby nuclear plant, Amélie, her immediate family, and her church family must walk to Utah from their home in Zillah, Washington. Not only is there physical danger lurking at every turn in the road, but personal struggle awaits— Amélie may lose her heart.
This well crafted, fast-paced novel will delight young and old alike, as they follow this tender story of personal determination to overcome physical challenges, heart-felt dilemmas, and societal trauma. The reader will relish the conflict and savor victory in the midst of defeat for a young girl and her stake in their modern day pioneer trek. Five stars, Margot! Great read!

Amélie doesn't have much to complain about. Senior year of high school is looking good. She's got a pretty good life, bum leg notwithstanding. Supported by a great family and a small but fiercly devoted circle of friends. When terrorists drop an EMP killing all things electric and church leadership tells her she must leave everything she knows behind and walk over 600 miles to Salt Lake City, she will question what she thought to be real: real friendship, real love, real survival.
A tightly written, beautifully described tale with a voice that rings true. Highly recommended.

The End Begins: Sudden Darkness is Margot Holvey's debut novel. Amélie is an 18 year old girl who goes from being a senior in High School to a modern day pioneer. When the government is attacked and the country plummets into chaos, Amélie and her family leave their home in Zillah, WA to start a trek to Salt Lake City with the other members of their LDS Stake. As a large group with resources that were in high demand Amélie, her family, and the others walking to Salt Lake City are a target for looters and liars who will do anything to get their resources; including kidnapping. Resources aren't the only thing at stake though - Amélie's heart is also at risk. Readers will enjoy the journey Holvey takes them on from Zillah, WA to Salt Lake City, UT. There is love, obstacles, and determination all along the way. Holvey does an excellent job of keeping you reading and wanting to know what is going to happen next. And of course, the cliffhanger at the end with wanting to know what Amélie and Zack were asked to do and what will happen next will have you asking yourself when another book is going to come out.
