This book is very well written and teaches us to go from a simple faith through understanding the doubts that we all have to a stronger faith. Highly recommend this to anyone.
This insightful and inspiring book has given me great insights into my own faith through the clear three stage model the authors present. I have read and reread and underlined. It is not wrong to have questions; we just need to know how to navigate the journey of learning in a patient, faithful manner. I found the chapter on "internet soft spots" especially helpful. We want quick answers but we need to understand the source and context of those answers. The insights in "Faith is Not Blind" are for teenagers, young adults, parents, grandparents and anyone who wishes to understand their own faith better. I found myself thinking about where I am in the three stage model. The many personal examples make the principles and ideas given especially relatable. A favorite quote from the book "We value what we discover more than we value what we are told. And unless we discover God's influence for ourselves, perhaps we won't know it is there, even if an angel tells us it is." It is comforting and invigorating to be reminded we can develop our faith in a world that dramatically devalues and openly attacks religious observance in any form. I highly recommend this book!
Yep! Yep! And Yep! I listened to the Audio Book on the Deseret Book's app (pretty much love that--all these fantastic audio books and more at my fingertips)! I LOVED the beautiful, understandable and radiant truth to Simplicity, Complexity and then onto the more mature Simplicity on the other side of Complexity. People have flaws. True. Sloppiness and Awkwardness happen and will continue to occur. However, we cannot deny the beauty, love and direction that comes from connection and communication with God. God's grace is sufficient! I am grateful for this book and the additional insight I gained from listening to it! Yea for Simplicity on the other side of Complexity. It is an amazing reason to celebrate!
I’m a fan of this Author and was glad to find this on a recent trip to the book store. One other reviewer mentioned it but the concept he develops in this very good book on faith is the process of understanding simple, then complex and eventually seeing the simple in the complex as it relates to the gospel. He writes clearly, in very understandable terms and brings to life faith in the age in which we now live. I highly recommend this book.
This book was riveting from start to finish. It provided a clear and beautiful model for the faith journey. I wish every member of the church could read it. Like Lehi's dream, it creates a template and allows us to see where we are in the process of gaining a relationship with God and his son Jesus Christ. It was a special treat to hear it read by the authors. Thank you both for this timely book.
I have been praying, reading and serching for the words and scriptures and vocalublary I need to express my "Chosing to Beleive" to people I love that are in the "Faith Crisis" stage of maturity and this wonderful book Faith Is Not Blind has given me the most powerful quotes, scriptures, insights that thrilled my heart and I feel I can share with others. I highly recomment the audio book! listening while driving to and from work each day became so exciting and made the time fly. I now have bought the hardcover, because I need to go back and take notes..... Thank you Brother and Sister Hafen... I knew you from the Val Verda 2nd ward and the Stone Creek ward in Bountiful. You will bless GENREATIONS with this wonderful book!
This was a book, that I totally enjoyed, I picked it up, and read it till I was finished, so it was morning when I finished it. It gives nice references to read as well, and since I like to work on them as a text book level, I have enough room for notes on the sides. Being someone who has severe depression, and an agoraphobic, its nice to be able to study the scriptures, and find the lesson's there in them... I have found that its easier to cope with some of my anxieties, through reading this. I hope this can help someone else.
This book helped me view my own heart, and begin to make some needed changes. I am excited to work on my faith amid the storm of complexity; the goal is now to enter the harbor of simplicity on the other side of complexity.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best books that I've read to help me better understand and gain answers to challenging questions that emerge during my faith journey. The three-stage framework is simple to understand and apply but it is sufficiently flexible and robust to account for the complexities that inevitably arise when one goes beyond a surface understanding of issues. After reading this book, I feel I am better equipped to not only ask better questions but to explore answers in a more reasoned as well as faith-based manner. Perhaps most importantly, I feel that I'm better able to understand and cope with the road bumps that inevitably come along as one seeks to think deeply about issues that don’t have immediate, clear-cut answers. The most powerful attribute of this book is that it provides the reader with very practical suggestions to keep moving forward in a constructive way. This is an invaluable resource for anyone desiring to strengthen one's faith without turning away when confronted with challenging issues and questions. This book is extremely well written with excellent concrete examples throughout. In a word...it is a real masterpiece!
This book is a MUST READ for every member of the Church! Not even kidding. Bruce and Marie Hafen address faith crisis issues head-on in this book in the most clear, articulate, unique, and effective way I have ever seen. Instead of tackling individual faith-shaking issues one by one, they describe broader paradigms and ways of dealing with complexity and tension in faith areas that, in my opinion, are vital for the development of mature and productive faith today. Couldn't recommend it more highly!!!
I’ve listened to the audio book twice. Ive felt “lost” for a while as my child-like faith came crashing into some harsh realities and have had to figure out what is real and what is/was delusional in my personal “faith history”. The Hafen’s address three stages of faith that I can really relate to. They give me hope that all this complexity will return to simplicity with effort to rebuild. This hope is incredibly helpful to me right now.
There are so many things in the world that challenge our faith. This book does a fantastic job of explaining why that is a good thing and even necessary for our spiritual maturity. It has given me a much better perspective on how to approach topics and issues I don't fully understand.
I was thrilled to receive this book as a gift - and read it in just a couple of days. Not only is it timely - it is important! The principles taught by Elder and Sister Hafen encourage readers as they move from 'simplicity of faith, through complexity and into simplicity beyond complexity' - as they grow in faith. After reading this book, I purchased several as gifts for friends and family. I especially wanted to share this book with friends/family who have callings in the Church that put them in a position to offer counsel and guidance to others who may be struggling with a crisis of faith.
Thank you Elder and Sister Hafen for sharing your wisdom and insight!
Even reading this book just once, it's stayed with me. In moments of intense and overwhelming uncertainty or doubt, it means more than words can say to feel that you're not alone. It means so much to feel that there IS light and understanding to come, even if it's a little farther down the tunnel you're in. This book made me feel that. It is faith deepening. Thank you! - Elizabeth, age 20, Provo UT
I throughly enjoyed this book and could not put it down. It gives you much to think about whether you are struggling with faith or not. Rather than testing your faith, this book helps you to understand faith as a powerful asset; that it can be gained and regained throughout your life. Read it!
Fabulous stories of life experiences! Great advice and wisdom!
Help for individuals and healing for a nation! I read it, reread it, can't put it down!
The book’s core message has had a profound influence on my life. It has changed my perspective on the way I want to live the gospel. With a newly discovered depth of faith, I have become more receptive to spiritual promptings and realize that I can use all experiences (good and bad) to deepen my discipleship.
I was lucky enough to read an early copy of Faith is Not Blind. As someone born somewhere between Gen X and Gen Y I found the book to be very helpful - written by someone with great experience, yet relevant for people my age. Uncertainty is part of the process. It’s not unusual to have doubt and if we view it the right way, doubt and searching can make us stronger.
I loved this book. I found it equally inspiring and practical in the way it frames the natural progression of faith that at times brings most of us to wonder. As a millennial, I found the tone approachable, relatable, and validating – not the least bit patronizing or condescending. As a bishop, I find the principles of the book immensely helpful in counseling with members of all ages as they pursue and progress along their own journey of testimony-building.
I really enjoyed many parts of this book. I especially loved the beginning. It was very captivating, however, I am only giving this book three stars because I had a really hard time getting interested in reading it after the first few chapters. The book just got a little bit dry. It did pick up again towards the end, but it is not a book I would read again. I think many people would enjoy it and learn a lot from it, I just got a bit bored with it and found it hard to go back and read. This would be a nice book to listen to as an audio book, if that format were available.
