Product Description

“Our purpose in life is to be tested, to develop faith, to make and keep sacred covenants, and, later, to leave,” writes President Russell M. Nelson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Our ultimate and highest destiny is to return to our heavenly home. When that times comes, it can be as momentous as the time of birth. Birth is the gateway to mortal life; death is the gateway to immortality and eternal life.”

In The Gateway We Call Death, President Nelson, a surgeon by profession and now a special witness of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, approaches the subject of death from both a medical and a theological point of view to discuss such topics as these:

  • The purpose of life and of death

  • The purpose of mourning

  • When death comes without warning

  • Factors of choice, such as suicide, euthanasia, and use of mechanical means to extend life

  • Life after death

“As I have come to comprehend more about life in all of its phases,” President Nelson writes, “I no longer feel that death is always that foe to be feared. Instead, I view it as a potential friend to be understood.”

The Gateway We Call Death provides reassurance and comfort for all who seek such understanding.

Great book for anyone who has lost a loved one
By , Submitted on 2017-08-29

This book is great whether you have lost a loved one or if you just want to learn gospel truths from an apostle. The book addresses not only deaths occurring naturally, like when a person is elderly, but he also talks about suicide, the death of a child and other unexpected deaths. He also addresses spiritual death and how it is different than physical death. He gives great insight as a cardiothoracic surgeon who has seen and dealt with death much during his career. This book helps take away the sting of death, the pain that is brought with the loss of the loved one as we learn and come to understand more fully the Lord's plan for us. I would recommend this book to everyone who has lost a spouse, a child or a friend. It helps you work through the struggle and pain that is left for those who remain after a loved one passes.

"I have come to view death as the gateway to immortality and eternal life...I no longer feel that death is that foe to be feared, instead, I see it as a potential friend that is to be understood."

"Death is a fellow traveler with whom one day each of us will walk. Only the time and the place of that rondevu is not known."

A Blessing of Peace and Comfort
By , Submitted on 2015-02-25

Today, even though we lost our 15 month old five years ago this book still speaks peace to my soul. I know it is true and it is real because Elder Nelson is an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is not a novel or hearsay or from someone who says they had a death experience who wrote a book about it. Those things leave us unsettled, and can cause even more suffering from the unsure and the unknown.
Elder Nelson speaks truth, the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ that provide a sure foundation. Jesus Christ is the author of The Great Plan of Salvation and Happiness. Even though our hearts hurt we can be comforted by the Holy Ghost. When we read the truths of the gospel the Holy Ghost can give us specific comfort that we can read again and again. These truths provide an anchor to our soul holding steadfast with a perfect brightness of Hope. We miss him because he is away from us for now. It would be a terrible thing not to miss him. We find great comfort knowing we will be more than able to be see him or be with him. We will raise him in the Millennium. It's such a Great Blessing to look forward to.
