“As a Sunday school teacher, The Hidden Christ helped me discover significant layers of meaning regarding the Savior in the Old Testament. It 'enlarged my soul and enlightened my understanding.'” — Becky, customer"What if I don't like the Old Testament?"
Author James L. Ferrell admits that he used to ask himself that question. However, there came a time in his life when he discovered what he had been missing, and at that point he "absolutely fell head over heels in love with the book. But I had to discover something before I fell in love," he writes. "I had to discover that the most powerful messages—about the gospel and about life—lie hidden just below the surface of the stories in the book. When I learned to ask questions that penetrated the surface, the Old Testament opened up to reveal a wonderland of inspiring truth and practical insight."
The Hidden Christ is the author's journey of discovery within the Old Testament, a journey that led him to find Christ in every story, every personality, every occurrence presented in that foundational work of scripture. Types, shadows, and parallelism abound, too many to be discounted or disputed. This thoughtful book explores many of those similitudes in depth, offering a perspective that illuminates Old Testament passages in surprising new ways.
Truly, "all things bear record" of Christ (Moses 6:63), and the Old Testament is no exception. It is the original testament of our Savior and Redeemer. The Hidden Christ offers a powerful pattern for your own exploration of an appreciation for this important book of scripture.
Paired with inspirational images in a beautifully designed gift book, her unflinchingly honest insights bring clarity to some of the most important issues we face today.
For those who have ears to hear and eyes to see this is an excellent catalyst for beginning an in-depth re-reading of the Old Testament. Can't wait until the gospel doctrine class cycles around to it again.
I was hoping for more back up references on this authors ideas. Some of the insights were great, however I felt a lot were the authors own ideas..
This book is so profound. It is written as a book on the Old Testament, but it's really an amazing vision of the overall Gospel--from the pillars of the Creation, Fall, and Atonement, to the purpose of the commandments and the temple, to the structure of the various dispensations of the gospel--even the spiritual history of the earth itself. And through it all the reader learns to see Christ in the scriptural stories and patterns in ways that are incredibly illuminating. It is an easy and engaging read while at the same time being very stimulating. A top recommendation.
I can't say enough good things about this book. The insights into the gospel are incredible. It has opened me to a whole new world of scripture study and learning. Five stars isn't nearly enough!
I am seeing the Savior in the Old Testament like never before. I love all the references in the footnotes. I am learning so much! I bought copies for family and will buy another copy -- one to lend so my own copy stays safe!
I enjoyed this a great deal and learned much. I wondered if a few areas were a bit of a stretch but overall I thought it was excellent and well worth reading and looking for the hidden messages.
If nothing else it helps to give a different perspective of what can be a difficult book (the Old Testament).
As one who, like the author, has been afraid of the Old Testament, this book has cured me of my fear. Reading this book was like coming out of a tunnel and into the light. I feel like I've been given eyes to see. I never knew I had missed so much. Thank you to the author for this wonderful gift!
I have cried multiple times while reading this book as the beautiful truths that are revealed have come cascading into my soul. This is not just an insightful study of the Old Testament but also a sweeping look at the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a book that has forever deepened my understanding of the gospel and that will change the way I read and ponder the scriptures. An amazing book.
Clearly the book is the author's own ideas and assumptions from his own scripture study and not necessarily church doctrine. I thought it would be great to have as a companion study for teaching Old Testament this year. My class would think I was off my rocker if I went this deep with them on the doctrine that I don't think he can necessarily support with scripture or modern day revelation. Also, not written in a very scholarly voice,
Having taught the Old Testament in Seminary, I thought I understood it fairly well. Obviously I hadn’t even scratched the surface. The Hidden Christ teaches masterfully that the scriptures are not just a random set of stories mingled with doctrine and that there is so much for us to find as we do more than let our eyes pass across the words. Thank you for this wake up call as to the effectiveness of my own scripture study.
The Hidden Christ opened my eyes like never before to the types of Christ all over the Old Testament. The parallels are unmistakable and astonishing. This book has made studying the Old Testament a completely fresh and exciting experience.
