In President Packer’s characteristic warmth and authoritative manner, he examines in appropriate detail the doctrines and practices surrounding the holy temples that dot the world. This timely and valuable book will help members at every stage of life as it focuses on a temple’s purpose, beauty, and the blessings it offers.
Part one offers the Lord’s invitation: “Come to the temple.” It sets forth the requirements for attendance—basically, preparation through worthiness—and the attitude and behavior appropriate for those attending that holy place on the first and all subsequent occasions. Part two deals in brief fashion with the ancient temples, then turns to the central human figure in the work of the temple—Elijah the Prophet, who anciently held the keys relative to the sealing power of the priesthood. Malachi’s prophecy and the human tradition about Elijah’s return in the latter days are impressively set forth.
Elijah’s return and all that it means for the happiness and salvation of man-kind are the themes of parts three and four. Following early Restoration scenes, the Kirtland Temple is built at great personal sacrifice. Dedicated, it fulfills a major purpose in the glorious visions of April 3, 1836, the Savior himself introducing three heavenly beings who then convey priesthood keys. One of these is Elijah. Thereafter the revelations progressively develop the doctrine of temple work for both the living and the dead; under divine direction temple ceremonies are introduced, and participants eagerly flock to the Nauvoo Temple; through President Wilford Woodruff the supporting work of lineage linking is clarified by revelation; and the spirit of Elijah is manifest both in and out of the Church as genealogical research and temple work blossom, temples multiply, and those beyond the veil assist those involved in the work here.
Fine illustrations enhance a motivational text filled with valuable concepts for the Latter-day Saint. The endowment with its sacred covenants and its elevating symbolic instruction, the sealing ordinance, and the other temple ceremonies are discussed sensitively and authoritatively. Written direct to the reader, this is an outstanding book on a subject crucial to every child of God.

This book is the perfect book for those who are receiving their endowment or for seasoned temple patrons. The book has taught me so much from why we have temples and the history of temples and the church to family history and the work that is done inside the temple. I wish I had this book and had read it before I received my endowments. This is the best book I have ever read about temples and so far it is the best thing I have found for temple prep other than the classes that the church provides. I read this book right after reading the book "The Lincoln Hypothesis" which talks a great deal about the history of the church and America and the importance of temples. I found the similarities between that book and the chapters about the histories of the church. I would recommend also reading that book before or after this one. I would recommend this book adults of course, but also for all teenagers so they learn about temples by the time they go there. This is a great book that you will want to keep on the bookshelf to read and reread all the time.
This is a timeless, magnificent book that should be required reading for all who are preparing to attend the temple for the first time and the 1,000th time. It is easy to read and the information flows off the pages. Highly Recommended that you add this to your personal library.
I am 19 yrs. old and I am preparing to receive my endowments. My grandma gave this book to me as a Christmas present, and I just think it is wonderful. It is a must read for any age group whether you're reading it as a preparatory book, or some bedtime reading. I have learned so many things that I either didn't know, or didn't understand before, because Elder Packer just has a way of explaining things so anyone can understand. I definitely recommend this book to anyone that has even the slightest interest in the Temple.
Such a comprehensive book about the temple! Such beautiful pictures inside. Beautiful cover and pages.
This book is great for preparing anyone for the temple. It is also a good reminder book for people who haven't been in a long time.
This book should be read by every member who plans on ever attending the temple, or for those who have already gone through the temple. I especially feel that this book helps prepare individuals to receive their endowment and be properly prepared for what information lies within that holy sanctuary. It is a highly recommended book by a great author!
This book was beautifully written. It is great to read during Family Home Evening, it adds to your lessons.
This book has always been a treasure, but the beautiful illustrations included in this edition from fine artists such as Al Rounds make this a keepsake as well. The illustrations are a wonderful addition.
i loved reading this magnficent book. it teaches you so much and brings to ligght somethings you may never have thought about. President Packer has a way of writing that keeps you enthralled, and a desire for more. i recommend this book to all who desire to learn more about the temple either before their first visit, to tose who have already been to the temple.
I read this book prior to going through the temple for the first time about nine years ago. I recommend it to everyone who is preparing to do the same. I gave a copy to a friend several thousand miles away who never gave it back...and was sad to know I'd never have it back. However, my sweet husband gave this beautiful copy as a gift last year for our wedding anniversary. I LOVE the simple way Pres. Packer talks about temples. It's a must for those who love the temple.
This is a beautiful edition of Elder Packer's excellent work on the Temple.
I'm a fairly new convert and I try to learn as much as possible about the scriptures, etc. It is very important that I will be well prepared when the day comes to receive my Endowments. When I first opened this treasure, The Holy Temple, I thought the reading might be difficult reading. It was a marvelous and pleasant surprise that, once one opens this book, it's glorious contents open up an entirely new, sacred and precious 'world'. Elder Packer's writing style walks you through the Temple history, the purposes of Temple work and it's high importance in our lives. He tells us what is expected of us and what we can expect in a loving, gentle way without violating the sacredness of inner Temple life. He guides us through the prayerful preparation so, when we receive our Endowments, we will value and appreciate those Temple Blessings more fully. Once I picked up this excellent book, I found it difficult to put it down in order to take care of more temporal tasks in and outside of the home. I highly recommend this book to all who are preparing to receive their Endowments and to those who desire an excellent reference for teaching and preparing others.
