What kind of life preparation does the Lord give the men He will one day call to be prophet? And what are the lessons to be learned from such a life?
"Each prophet's mortal schooling is singular," writes author Sheri Dew. "In studying a prophet's life, we see how the Lord molds, prepares, and tutors a man so that at the appointed hour, he is able, worthy, and ready to be His mouthpiece and to lead His people."
Insights from a Prophet's Life offers a candid view of President Russell M. Nelson, the seventeenth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from childhood to the current day. More than a biography, this landmark volume invites readers to experience President Nelson's life through dozens of brief vignettes and hundreds of photographs. Each episode highlights an important lesson; taken together, they weave a captivating story of a man prepared in a unique way to lead the Church in our day.
"The attempt of this book," the author writes, "is not only to highlight signal events in President Nelson's life . . . but, in particular, to examine major episodes from the life of the living prophet and extract the insights embedded in them. Some of these episodes in President Nelson's life took place in a matter of minutes or hours; others spanned several years. I selected each episode either because he learned something or because we can learn something from him, or both. . . . Impressions, thoughts, learnings, and insights will vary with each person. Personal revelation is just that—personal. That you will learn from President Russell M. Nelson's life, though, is a given. It is certain."

I love this book. I wish more biographies were written this way. I was touch, inspired, uplifted, taught. I am a better person for listening to this book. I am so happy it is an audio book! What an inspiring read. What an amazing man, father, disciple, husband, friend, comforter, Prophet. As you read, you will feel the Spirit and it will testify to you of the truthfulness of this gospel, why we are here and how our Father in Heaven wants us to act. Thank you for this book!
This is an excellent and enlightening book. I enjoyed reading it very much.
I don't always read biographies because it is an overly detailed account of year after year of the persons life.
Sheri has taken a fantastic approach of focusing only on critical moments from President Nelson's life. I got more out of this book for my own life than other biographies.
This was so good and insightful! It has strengthened my testimony and given me new knowledge.
I just finished reading a fantastic book. Insights from a Prophet's Life allowed me to see that President Nelson has been trained and groomed from his early days to listen and learn from others and from the spirit. He is remarkable and inspiring. I love Sheri Dew's writing style. It was a easy read and loved all the photos and his personal experiences.. He loves people, he loves the Lord, and he loves his family. Hip Hip Hooray to Sheri Dew for getting this book out quickly.
Just when you think you couldn't love him more....
What a blessing to the world he is. I am inspired to be better.
The read of this audiobook fills one's spirit with joy and hope that living with a dominant eye to the Lord can manifest the power of revelation into our everyday lives. The engagement of that revelation into the world, is the source of innovation endorsed in Heaven for the betterment of all. Thank you to all those who made this Insight available on audio for aging eyes to enjoy.
We are serving as senior missionaries on the other side of the world. The accounts of President Nelson's life could easily stand as a appendix to Preach My Gospel. Just this week, we tried to follow President Nelson's example by asking a less active young couple, "What can we do to help you?" just as he has done so many times. Immediately doors were opened. A powerfully written book of a power life.
Further, we endorse the suggestion that someone (preferably Sheri Dew) write the biographies of some of the wives of the prophets.
I absolutely love this book!!! Very inspiring and entertaining! I love hearing about the prophets life and all the stories shared in this book!
This is amazing! I soaked up every word. I can feel the Prophets love for the world.
These words inside of this book were so impowering, from President Nelson.
President Nelson is walking in the example of Jesus Christ. He shares with each of you who is willing to read his words.
That we each may have people not happy with us. We need to step forward and still Stand as a Witness of Jesus Christ at any time of the day.
We are each a Child of God and Jesus Christ is our elder brother. His example may seem hard to follow. Through the example of our Prophet Russell M. Nelson we can keep trying.
Read these words you will find joy in them all and will have a greater understanding of our life here on earth in these Latter-days.
This book is so well written, I devoured it! Everyone should read/and or listen to it at least once, if not more! So inspirational and uplifting!
A great book, written along the lines of Pres. Oaks's "Life's Lessons Learned." I found myself weeping for joy as I read. One ommission: Dew didn't discuss Pres. Nelson's reading of all the references to Christ (2,249 scriptures) in the topical guide. This was a crucial cornerstone in his prophetic preparation--solidky grounding him and his doctrine on the rock of our Redeemer. See the Ezra Taft Benson manual, ch. 8, "The Power of the Word," for the best rallying speech for scripture study.
I LOVE that this is an audio book! I can't wait to listen to it every chance I get, since I'm listening to it again, it's that good! I especially love it for one reason - because it's so relatable!!! I knew I loved Pres. Nelson before this book since I've met him in person AND have listened to all of his conference talks for the past 40 years but I really love this whole book! He influences my daily life a LOT because he is such a great inspiration to me. I love all of the apostles and prophets! My dad died 27 years ago and especially since that time I feel like all of the apostles and prophets during the past 27 years have taken the place of my father. I listen and learn and have been lead 100% in the right direction all of my life as I follow them. Who else can you say has lead you 100% correctly - and you have NO regrets in 63 years for following their counsel, advice and example!? Thank you VERY much Sheri Dew!!!
I read President Nelson's biography Russell M. Nelson: Father, Surgeon, Apostle by Spencer J. Condie some years ago. Although I enjoyed it, it was a lot of information- almost too much-and the writing style was not my favorite. I am so happy that an updated biography was made and who better than Sheri Dew to write it! I loved this book! It does have some of the same stories I had read in the other book, but they were wonderful and worth hearing again. What I love about this book is that it is not just a biography. It is chapter after chapter of stories and teaching and little lessons you can apply to your own life. It shows you how the prophet changed and developed in his life. It makes me want to act and be more like the prophet and in doing that, I will become more like my Savior. Another very cool thing about this book is that the pictures come in color. I really loved this book and would recommend that everyone reads it to learn more about the prophet's life and character. This really is a must read book!
Our family has the tradition of hanging a picture of the President of the Church in our home. Several months ago, our landlord was in to do a repair and pointing to President Nelson's picture asked "Who is that distinguished gentleman?"
As I read INSIGHTS last evening, I too thought "distinguished" but also was in awe of how President Nelson has been tutored and prepared for each season of his life...especially for his calling as Prophet of the Lord. I didn't think I could love the Prophet anymore than I did, but in reading, a greater love and respect is growing...LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
The details presented on the prophet's life and accounting of his brilliance, integrity and expanded perspective of the world, life and family are inspiring. The accounting of the support provided by his first wife por trays a superwoman! What an amazing contribution is now being made by his second wife..I feel the decision made by Sheri Dew to withhold on her insights and to allow us our own is motivating. Just what we need at this time in the forward movement of the Church.
This is the best church book I have listened to in years. It is very well written and the narrator is good. Most importantly you will get many insights not only into the life of our living Prophet but also into the gospel itself. I think everyone should read this!
The first half was well done, but I sensed that President Nelson was resistant to and uninvolved with this project. About the time Wendy enters the picture the book comes alive with detail and information. Really, really loved the second half (and suspect I have Sister Nelson herself to thank for that, thanks, Sister Nelson! Also, it makes me think, a series of biographies on the prophets’ wives would be awesome, could you get to that Deseret Book?).
A great, worthwhile read, despite the weaknesses of the first half.
I loved learning about the prophet’s life and his amazing journey spiritually and in everyday life! I think my favorite thing was realizing that though he had every excuse to say he was too busy to serve in callings, that he prioritized his life to serve the Lord. The book was so wonderful that as it ended I thought, man I wish it was longer and told me more!
