Excellent Movie

I loved the movie. Yes it did move back and forth in time but the story was excellent. I enjoyed the story of Emma and Jane very much. I found the movie quite enlightening. I definitely recommend it.

Jane and Emma

This was a disappointment. My husband buys movies occasionally to share w the family. I expected different content, maybe with more church history. It didn’t hold our attention and won’t be shared. The character of Jane was included in the Saints book, yet nothing more about adopting her, etc. If there wasn’t much to build a story on, why make a movie?

Amazing Movie

Don't usually write reviews...but saw it had a cumulative score of 3 stars!!! Whaaaaat? LOVED this movie. Appreciated the artistry, the music, the quiet, solid, thought provoking performances, the honesty, just all of it!
5 stars!!!!! I'd give it 10 if I could!

Terrible!

I quit halfway through the movie. It left me with such a bad feeling. The spirit and Mee just screamed no this is not right. I kept wondering if somebody was writing about someone else. This was definitely not Emma. It was definitely not Joseph. Very much a waste of money.

Very Disappointed

I had great expectations of this movie but was highly disappointed by it. I felt that the characterization of Emma was weak and I really did not care for the man who portrayed Joseph. I give this a poor rating.

A beautifully written story that needed to be told! Emma Smith was an amazing lady, tough as nails with a heart of gold. The movie was different that I expected, but I was not disappointed. Gave me a greater appreciation for ALL the early saints, for their trials and acceptance in society. A strong reminder that we as members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints need to treat everyone with love and respect.

So Disappointed

I had been looking forward to watching this movie... but it was very disappointing. It was boring, and often confusing going with all the back and forth. But the worst was Joseph - he literally looked like he was wearing makeup and was rather creepy.

Boring beyond belief! We kept waiting for it to get interesting--never did. What a disappointment with all the hype they gave it. Also most of this movie is pure conjecture. Do not waste your money. Doesn't even deserve one star.

Not a family movie
By , Submitted on 2019-05-09

I was disappointed in this film. I didn’t like how I felt during most of the movie. And, I was regretting giving it to my daughters for Easter to add to our Sunday movie library. It I could have a do-over, I wouldn’t have watched it. I will be giving it to DI. I wish I could return it. I would not recommend this to my friends or children. The courage and faith of both women are admirable, but this night is not necessarily family movie material.

A great movie with great highlights!

Jane and Emma was definitely worth seeing. I especially liked about the last two thirds of the movie. There were intense scenes where you could see the actors and actresses doing more than just “act”, there was real anger, there was real tears and there was real grit! I was hoping the movie could have been longer because it was that good. However, I felt like the first third of the movie could have been improved as it seemed kinda slow because it didn’t capture most of my attention.

What a beautiful movie! Even though it may be speculation, it brings out what some of the struggles and emotions both of these women
probably felt. I never understood a lot of the things that Emma went through! I had read them. But the struggles of the men were
always more to the forefront than that of the women. These were good women! I am so glad that through this movie, I came to understand
their human side a little more. It helps me.

Very disappointed.

I was so looking forward to purchasing and watching this movie , that I ordered it early. I wish I could ask for my 25.00 dollars back. This was a story of ONE NIGHT, that was pure speculation, with flashbacks thrown in (which were confusing) and Emma (who was depicted as crazed). This was dark, slow, bothersome in many respects and actually boring. I actually got more out of it after the movie ended and we saw photos and Jane's testimony and a little insight as to who she was and what she went through. Jane's life, though we don't know much about it, would have been better than the choice to write a movie that we honestly really know nothing about. No documentation of Emma's feelings, or writings, or any of Jane's writings about 'that night', so I feel like it was basically fiction which I didn't enjoy at all. It make me really reluctant to purchase another movie ever again.

Very disappointed....

The worst LDS-geared movie I’ve ever seen. The plot line was flat and lackluster. The actor who played Joseph Smith was so creepy that I thought he was gonna try to assault Jane at some point (shouldn’t they have had a more quality actor playing a prophet of God, not some B-movie actor?) The acting was melancholy and mediocre and lacked depth. The costuming looked like it was done by a young women’s group using McCall’s costume patterns and Walmart fabric. And Joseph Smith died in June 1844.... the middle of summer, so why were the outdoor scenes filmed in what looks like late winter?

Maybe T.C. Christensen’s films set too high of a bar for me. I don’t know.

A Disappointment

Of all the inspiring stories that could be told about these two great women, the film makers chose pure fiction. A line in the trailer is a veiled admission to the film's fabrication: "One night that MIGHT HAVE been." Emma is portrayed as a crazed and bitter woman who refuses to let the Saints even view Joseph's body and will keep them away at gunpoint. Jane is apparently the only person in Nauvoo that she trusts. The acting is overly dramatic. Continuing flashbacks are not well executed, leaving you to wonder what exactly is going on and when. The film is dark and depressing and left me wondering why the film makers chose to produce this strange and distorted story of a time that is so deeply sacred to the Latter-day Saint community.

Powerful and Moving

Professionally acted and masterfully constructed, Jane & Emma is an amazing movie. It made me laugh. ("Brother James? I ain't come for your tithing" when she calls the man she will eventually marry by the more formal title.) And it made me cry. But more than that, my heart was touched. ("I am a child of God, just like you.") This movie is well-written, giving the audience much to think about. I love how it shows sisterhood, mistakes, forgiveness, and faith. The music is moving and hauntingly beautiful. This is one powerful movie I will watch again and again.

Great

This movie was a little bit confusing to me at first. I didn't realize it would be all about one night (plus flash-backs) and I guess I did not know as much about church history as I thought, some parts of Jane's story, etc were all new to me. I was surprised how mean some of the members were not only to African-Americans, but to Emma as well. They really show you how it was and dont try to cover up the ugly this- I appreciate that transparency. My young children were a bit scared with the scenes and the fact the Joseph's body was on the table during a large part of the movie. I liked and hated the movie at the same time the first time it was watched, mostly because I was a little lost and confused on what was going on. There are great parts of the movie and character development. I loved seeing the bond that Emma and Jane develop. I am really glad I gave the movie a second chance because it made so much more sense. I really did enjoy it the second time and do consider it a 5 star movie. The acting and everything was excellent! I would recommend this for teens and up, it can be a bit scary for young children. It is worth watching!

Fantastic, Must-See Film
By , Submitted on 2019-02-04

I saw Jane and Emma and immediately bought tickets to take my college-age children and best friend to see it as well. Such a powerful story told in a unique way. Every Church member needs to see this, know Jane's and Emma's stories, and experience the raw emotion portrayed in this film. I left it with a sense of gratitude for the incredible sacrifices and examples of these women who have faced-down prejudice, hate, and immensely-difficult life circumstances—and lived their lives the best they could in spite of it all. The film shines through the portrayal of relationship and small actions that affect change on an individual level. A wonderful soundtrack and fine production encircle the actors' powerful portrayals in this historical treasure.

A must-see Latter-day Saint film!!

This is a type of film that doesn't come along often. It stretches the boundaries of the typical "norm" and has the potential to open up minds and hearts. It is no coincidence this film was released during the 40th anniversary year of the revelation given in 1978. Watch this movie. Be ready to be changed. And share it with others. You will be glad you did.

Groundbreaking beautiful film!

We loved JANE AND EMMA! A strong film filled with powerful questions of faith, family, and sisterhood. The mighty Jane Manning James was so beautiful depicted by a breathtaking actress. Perfectly cast, well acted, beautifully shot. We will watch and rewatch this film in our home with friends and family until the end of time.

A beautiful and inspiring story you've never heard before

My wife and I absolutely love this movie. What a great story of love and Sisterhood. We know so little about this chapter of our own history, and to be able to see it told in such a beautiful and inspiring way has really been a blessing in our lives. Jane Manning James is an inspiration to us as a pioneer that did whatever her Father in Heaven asked.
