This new edition is the first since the Journal was published in the nineteenth century. All previous versions were printings, not editions, and the only modern versions have been copies of copies, with a corresponding degradation of what was rather poor typesetting to begin with. In this new edition, the text has been completely reset for the first time.
To ensure accuracy, this edition has been proofread against the original. Some of the more distracting archaic spellings and punctuation have been modernized for easier reading, but all of the original wording has been preserved. In addition, this new version is printed in large, clear type on 7-by-10-inch pages (the original was 5.25 by 8.125). For ease of reference, it also includes the original page numbers, like this [p37], in the running text.
This is the finest and most readable version of the Journal of Discourses ever published. *Does NOT include the standard index.
I love the Journal of Discourses. I use my fathers set all the time. My wife bought me this Millenium edition. It is not easy to search by topic as there is NO index. Very frustrating actually for the price paid. If you just want to read from beginning to end no problem, but I like to study by subject. It is not possible with this edition. For this reason I gave it 2 stars. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.
The Journal of Discourses deservedly ranks as one of the standard works of the Church, and every rightminded Saint will certainly welcome with joy every number (issue) as it comes forth. - President George Q. Cannon, Journal of Discourses, Preface, Volume 8.
This does not contain official teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and is not faith promoting.
