This book is one I’ve wanted to read since it came out. When I got it for Christmas, I was thrilled! I loved listening to Sister Beck when she was General Relief Society President. She always had the best stories and she seemed just like a normal person when she spoke in General Conference.
She writes just like she speaks. Maybe because this book has several of her talks from various places. I loved each and every one of the stories she told about her life and the lives of her ancestors. She is able to relate so many experiences to the Gospel and the way we should be living our lives. And she’s just a really interesting person!
I learned so many valuable lessons from reading this one. I hope that when I need them in my life, I can remember them and use them.
Sister Beck's book is written beautifully. She shares stories of her parents mission to Brazil when their family was young. I have loved the stories of her own thoughts and what she has learned. It is a book that was hard to put down, and I will read it again. It helps us to remember who we are, the covenants we have made, and the great blessings from these covenants. THank you for this lovely book.
She is very talented at teaching the way Jesus taught. The last three chapters are life changing.
I have missed Sister Beck's beautiful General Conference addresses, and from the very first words on the page, Sister Beck's voice leapt off the page! I love her teaching style. She takes deep doctrinal concepts and makes them simple to understand. I feel so empowered to be a covenant keeper and enjoy the rich blessings that come from being a daughter of Abraham. Reading this book has helped me re-prioritize where I spend my time and refocus on the things that matter most.
What a joy this book has been to read. As Sister Beck recounts her different experiences, I've been reminded that I truly am a Daughter of God. We repeat this in primary, we say it all the time to our kids, but perhaps we've often brushed past this truly important heritage because we say it so often. When we take time to ponder on our heritage, and the covenants we have with the Lord, there's nothing but Joy that can fill our hearts. This book has been a great joy to me to read.
I received a copy for review purposes only, and all thoughts are truly my own.
I enjoyed reading the stories of her parents and their family experiences as mission presidents in Brazil. This book is not written in novel style, but is a collection of her family stories, talks and reflections, so it may be hard to read in one sitting. I found it easier to read in sections, but it has so many great principles. I also enjoyed reading all about how the Daughters In My Kingdom came about and the inspiration behind it.
Julie B. Beck is one of the most incredible people I have ever had the privilege of reading a book by. Could her life get any more perfect? She has had so many awesome experiences; I am glad that she decided to share them in this book. She also managed to pull off the cutest beginning of a book ever, as she talks about her parents and what a joy it was to grow up in their home. You can tell how much she loves them by the way she writes. Beck’s stories are the best part of her book, I loved the way she talks about the experiences from her life and how she has watched countless others keep their covenants.
There were several parts of her book that made me stop and think. I loved the premise of her book, which was her parents life motto of “Enjoy It!” No matter what hardship is happening, we can take a moment and because of our covenants, see the bigger picture. What an attitude to have! Some other quotes from her book that I enjoyed were when her father was offering someone a calling and they said they couldn’t accept it because they smoke. His response was, “you used to smoke!” I also learned that her and all nine of her siblings graduated from BYU, which made my heart so happy this rivalry week. Julie B. Beck is an extremely talented writer and a bright woman who aims to empower and inspire all women to be the best that they can be.
Adapted from a series of talks Sister Beck has given over the years, Joy in the Covenant has been a truly sweet read filled with the same spirit she brought while serving as the General Relief Society President. I enjoyed reading about different experiences in her life and the lessons she learned from them. I loved the stories she shared about her parents and the wisdom and council they gave, as well as the snippets at the beginning of each chapter where she explained the circumstances surrounding the talk. If you are looking for ways to increase the joy in your life and to find greater joy in living your covenants, then you'll want to pick up a copy of this book.
What a beautifully written book. I felt inspired as I read of the legacy of Sister Beck’s parents, the lessons she has learned in her life, especially those experienced and learned in her service in the church. I found it fasinating to read about her responsibility and envolvement with “Daughters in My Kingdom”. Definitely a book that will make you have the desire to be a better covenant keeper and find joy in being a member of the church.
Life can be challenging, even when things seem to be good. It's so easy to get caught up in every day life and allow ourselves to be ground down. This book is a nice reminder that we need to make the time and take the time to remember "men are that they might have joy" and look for it in our lives. I like that while the book flows with a common theme, each chapter can stand alone, making it easy to study in short bursts. I always enjoy sister Beck's straightforward style. She doesn't beat around the bush, and she is always encouraging and uplifting, reminding us that we can do it and we can make it.
I was sucked into this book right away!! I just recently moved out of state and away from all of my family and friends. At times it has been very lonely. When I read the story of Sister Beck's mother and the reminder to enjoy life in the stage that you're in, I truly felt the loneliness lift up off of my shoulders. I felt peace. This was the exact reminder I needed in my life. Though I am far away from family, I need to enjoy the stage of life I am in and where I am at. Sister Beck is truly an amazing woman with a strong testimony that inspires me to remember the covenants I've made, the work I've been called to do and the important reminder to enjoy it all: the hard work and the rewards. This is such a positive and uplifting book and I'll definitely be sharing it with friends and family!
This is such a timely book, and I so enjoyed reading her insights and testimony throughout the whole thing. It was hopeful, inspiring, and practical. The format is also great, as each chapter can be read separately.
I absolutely loved reading Sister Julie B. Beck's book Joy in the Covenant! From our ancestral family (Abraham and Sarah) to her own present-day family, Sis. Beck shares insights into how our covenants can give us a greater sense of identity, purpose, and power. I loved Sis. Beck as she served as the Relief Society general president. She was a powerhouse then for me, and this book captures that power again. She has lived a mortal life with ups and downs, but she is a first-hand witness that making and keeping covenants can bring you through it all. As a mother of a tweenager and a toddler, I especially Sis. Beck's insights into the roles of mother and nurturer. She shares powerful examples from scriptural history, Church history, and her own family history of how much influence we, as parents, can have on the upcoming generations. Her section on the coming forth of Daughters in My Kingdom: The History and Work of Relief Society was very fascinating and re-kindled my love for Relief Society and the unique sisterhood we share in that organization. This book powerful shows how making and keeping covenants can strengthen, comfort, and empower us to succeed in all that God asks of us. I highly recommend it!
In her typical style of personally connecting with people, Julie shares some of her life stories through talks she has given. Her insights into the challenges we face reach deep into your soul. I read this book from cover to cover in a matter of days because it was filling a need I didn’t even know I had. My life has been greatly blessed because of Julie’s willingness to open up her heart and share these legendary talks with us.
As I read Sister Beck’s book, some of the most impactful and interesting takeaways for me were surrounding her mom and dad and the way they parented. Her mother gave birth to their seventh baby 10 days after arriving in Brazil to do missionary work! Who is this rockstar woman??
I loved learning about the ripple effect of her parents’ positive outlook. Their family’s motto “Enjoy it” is something I want to adopt in my own family.
Life can be a grind, even when we’re in the midst of doing very meaningful and important work. Training our minds and hearts to enjoy the process is probably one of the best things we can do. If Sister Beck’s mother can find enjoyment as a mother to seven children, without a washer and dryer, ministering to the missionaries in Brazil amidst a Hepatitis outbreak, I feel fairly certain that I should be able to find joy in my life. I found some great takeaways in this book!
What a refreshing format in a book form - I LOVE that each chapter is a talk. I can read and study one chapter and get the entire message in one sitting. I love getting to hear continued thoughts from Sister Beck after she was released as general Relief Society president. While I have loved the women called after her, I have missed Sister Beck's directness. The depth of doctrine, of purpose, and vision has awakened me. I am encouraged and reenergized in the deliberate pursuit of discovering who I am in Gods eyes.
This book is for every bishop, every leader, every member. With the changes the church is experiencing, this book has been perfectly orchestrated to come "for such a time as this".
I read parts of the book and listened to other parts as an audio book. I enjoyed both, but if I had to choose between them I would choose the hard cover for sure. There are so many wonderful words of advice and great teachings that go right in line with what we learned at the last conference. I absolutely loved this book. I would recommend this to everyone, women and men.
In a time of increasing confusion, this book is just what people need. It clearly identifies what matters most in the lives of true disciples. Sister Beck draws from personal experience and family examples to share stories that will both inspire and motivate. Not everything has to be complicated, least of all the gospel of Jesus Christ. This book is a simple yet profound expression of life's real challenges, optimism, enduring faith, and the wisdom that comes from their combination. I would recommend it to anyone who is ready to focus on the basics of faith, family, service and love.
This is a wonderful, spirit-filled book with many of the teachings I've come to rely on hearing from Julie Beck. There are some really inspiring family stories along with other personal stories and insights. So many people have listened and appreciated the words of Sister Beck over the past decade; it's truly a blessing to have more of them! Her down-to-earth wisdom and clear eyed vision have the same ring of truth they always have. It was a pleasure to read from start to finish!
