Product Description

In this book, Elder David A. Bednar offers a compelling look at a pattern the Lord uses to bless His people: He works with us on an individual basis, one by one. Demonstrating that pattern as it occurs throughout the scriptures, in the lives of many Church leaders, and in his own ministry, Elder Bednar invites us to open our hearts to the Lord's love. He also teaches that by ministering as the Savior does, one by one, we can be more powerful instruments in His hands to accomplish His purposes.

From a "guided tour" through scriptural illustration to an array of touching personal accounts, this important new book offers hope and guidance for anyone who has ever wondered, "Do I matter to the Lord?"

Every time I pick up this book I find myself up lifted. It has helped me look at others in a different light. Now I don't think I am in a certain place at a certain time by coincidence but that My Heavenly Father guides us to places he needs us to be to help reach out to others who need us one by one.

This is an inspiring and uplifting book. I loved the use of scriptures, and quotes from current and past leaders in the church about the topic of "One by One". In addition, Elder Bednar uses personal stories that pull you in and make you think about your own situations that have happened in your life. I loved how throughout the book you are remind of the love our Heavenly Father has for us. This book helped my to be mindful of the one that we serve, whether in our home, church, or out in the community. We need to focus on the one that we can impact with the help of the Savior. I loved the invitations at the end of each chapter has they helped me ponder more deeply on what I had read and how I can make a difference.

This book is an eloquent reminder of our individual worth to God and that we are indeed known. Filled with scriptural examples of Jesus' attention to the individual, current teachings of the church and attention concentrated on the individual, and experiences from Elder Bednar where he has testifies of his personal knowledge of the importance of the individual. At a time when the world would have us believe we are unimportant and that God doesn't know us, this book is a wonderful reminder that we matter. . . Each and every one of us. Thanks Elder Bednar, it was time well spent.

Worth of Souls is Great in the Sight of God; Narration of the Book is Good

Content - 5/5
The content helped reinforce and sharpen the perspective that the Lord works with us on an individual basis. I felt prompted to listen to the book and got some answers to questions I had been seeking. I liked the points about thinking about teaching people instead of lessons. The book also emphasizes how the Lord works many different things in the universe toward helping the one. It is truly amazing to ponder how God might accomplish this, but for those who choose to see it as God's hand it is miraculous.

I personally liked the repetition that Elder Bednar uses to drill in the point that the worth of souls is great in the sight of God. That is a message that we all need to remember and understand. I have been fortunate to have felt that God loves me personally from a young age, but I think that we all can use this reminder and many of us need to have it driven into our souls repeatedly - so I think the repetition great in this regard. I also appreciated the demonstrations of how different scriptural accounts of events and stories are about individuals. I imagine Elder Bednar has read and pondered the scriptures with this one question in mind seeking for an answer. I am grateful that he chose to share his insights in a book.

I did not receive an early copy of the book as most of the reviews up to this point seem to be since they were posted here before the release date of the book.

Audiobook Narration - Good overall - 4/5
The book was read by Elder Bednar which was nice. It was a quality recording except for some minor volume-level issues that might not be noticeable if you aren't listening on headphones. It was not to the point of annoying by any stretch. Also the app itself (Deseret Book's Bookshelf App) has some glitches that cause the book to stop and jump back a few minutes now and then. The glitches are mildly irritating especially when it happens while driving. If 5 stars is perfection it was not quite that, but I don't expect Elder Bednar to be everything that he is plus a brilliant narrator conscious of the technicalities of recording an audio book to boot. It was good narration.

Inspiring and personal

I really enjoyed this book. I listened to the audio book and loved how personal of an approach Elder Bendar takes. It feels like it is just you and him in the room and he is teaching personally, like he is just talking to you and no one else. He shares several of his own stories and shows us of many examples throughout the scriptures where the Lord healed, taught and cared for the individual person. The Lord taught thousands and yet he always remembered, cared for and helped the one. He taught us the pattern that we should be doing. We need to teach, love, serve and help people individually. Even if we are teaching or caring for several people we need to see them as lots of "ones." This book also reminds us that we are important to the Lord and he knows us and loves us individually. It is good for anyone who is struggling to find the Lord's hand in their lives or those who wonder if the Lord even knows who they are. The book is set up like his other books with questions to ponder and places to write your own thoughts if you have the hard copy. If you listen to the audio Elder Bednar asks the same questions and you can just write them in a study journal. This is such a wonderful book! It is the best book I have read all year. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone! It is directed toward adults, but young adults could still get a lot out of it. Leaders and those preparing for a mission could benefit greatly from the teachings in this book. It is a book that you can read over and over again and learn something new each time. I highly recommend it!

"I believe that in the work of the Lord there is no such thing as a coincidence. The worth of souls is great in the sight of God." Elder Bednar

One by One - the inspired spiritual pattern from the life of our Savior that illustrates how we are taught and blessed and how we may minister to and bless others.
By , Submitted on 2017-08-29

Elder Bednar shares experiences, both personal and from the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ, that illustrate the inspired pattern of service, ministering, and tender mercies that come, 'one by one'. The clarity from countless scriptures and examples has helped me develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of this important principle and is helping me to be a better husband, father and servant.

Powerful. Full of love.

Elder Bednar always has a way to make doctrine so approachable. You cannot read this book and not feel the love that God has for each one of us. It also puts the business in life and church into perspective and that we should always be focused on "the one" as that is the pattern established in both life and scripture. Listening to him on the audiobook read his words made it even more personal and powerful.

Worth the read

It's a quick read/listen. I got through most of it in one Sunday afternoon. Note-I listened to the audiobook on PLUS.
I like the idea of this book and the fact that it's read by Elder Bednar is a plus. There is a nice spirit about it and it's definitely worth listening to. However, it gets a little repetitive at times. You can only hear the words "One by one" so many times before it starts to lose its meaning. Other than that, I'd highly recommend this book, especially if you're struggling with feeling unimportant.

A Blueprint to be a Disciple
By , Submitted on 2017-08-25

I was given the opportunity to read Elder Bednar's book, One by One, in ebook format. This book is a reminder that throughout our lives others have hearkened to the call to teach us "one by one" through various means and that we are to look and act upon those opportunities to seek out and teach others "one by one." Our Master Teacher, Jesus Christ, has shown us the way through his ministry and it is His example that we strive to follow. This book serves as a blueprint and is full of examples on how to reach out to others as our Savior did. I can hear Elder Bednar's voice as I read the text. I enjoyed the stories and examples he gave, both in the scriptures as well from his own personal experiences. It is yet another testimony that we are truly known and watched over by our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. It is only 133 pages as an ebook, but I found it best to read it slowly to really digest and ponder on the insights presented.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I would not however mark it as one of most favorite texts. The examples provided were thought provoking however at the same time, almost self-glorifying. Granted, the author is an apostle and closer to the Lord than I could ever hope to be, but as I read each story Elder Bednar presented it was obvious how each would end.. I found the references or examples directly from the quoted scripture for me were more powerful and strengthen the idea of "One by One' of the book. I don't really think I would recommend this test to others unless they just really like to read books from Elder Bednar. I did appreciate the chapter topics "Examples of Jesus Christ", "the Book or Mormon", "the Work of the Ministry", and "the Tender Mercies of the Lord", all directed to the topic of One by One. I could see where and how I would apply the concept of "One by One' in my life after reading this text however, there just seemed to be a lot of fluff or filler to help stretch it out to 145 or so pages. I appreciate the opportunity to pre-read the text and submit my review.

This is a beautiful and inspiring book. If ever there was any wonder about how the Lord knows, loves, and takes care of us on an individual basis, this book dispels all doubt. Highly recommend!

'One by One'
By , Submitted on 2017-08-20

This was a truly uplifting and instructional book. I personally loved how Elder Bednar quoted so many current and past brethren who taught on this subject, using these words as listed by the title. Along with several choice quotes, various scriptures, hymns, and many, many personal experiences were shared by Elder Bednar teaching the importance and value of 'the one'. Indeed, the worth of souls (a soul) is great in the eyes of God. The manner in which he taught throughout the book using his personal experiences allowed the spirit to open my heart and memory of experiences that I too have had, of either being ministered to personally on a 'one by one' approach, or how I was blessed to follow the promptings of the spirit and be involved in caring for the needs of others on a 'one by one' basis. As a church we certainly do not believe in coincidences. Then, to top it all off, he finishes the book not providing a closing summary or ending, but stating that this is not the end of the book, as ministering in the Lord's way, 'one by one', must continue, not only in his own life but in our own lives as we write our own stories of ministering in the the Lord's way, 'one by one'. I so appreciate the opportunity to have read this book and will strive to go forward with better application of seeking the spirit, and responding to the spirit, to experience the joy of ministering 'one by one', to all who may be in need around me. Thank you Elder Bednar.

The Savior loves us One by One

A wonderful study guide that's helps us understand that the worth of a soul is great in the sight of the Lord. Elder Bednar clearly shows us that Christ's ministry here ano earth both in Jerusalem and in the America's is filled with examples of how he showed love one by one. We all are valuable, we are all unique and we are each redeemed individually. This book will strengthen your self worth and give you valuable perspective.

Study it!...Life Changing!

I thought I understood how Christ served others, how important I am to Heavenly Father, and that I should do my callings well. But this book opened my eyes and ears to see and hear what I really should be focusing on in life. I loved the scriptural accounts of how Christ served others 'one by one'. It helped me to see His great pattern of service. Then the book takes you through how the church reaches everyone. How councils should focus on the needs of each member of the ward, and how our calling is truly important-- even if to 'one' other person. As I was reading this book, I was visiting in a home and the Spirit testified to me that this dear sister was a 'one'. I knew we needed to act on that feeling and serve and love more deeply. The book doesn't really end; because Elder Bednar filled the last chapter with accounts of Tender Mercies and invites you to continue to watch for them in your own life. This book really changed my life for the better. It was a tender mercy in itself to me.

An excellent read! After noting at the end of each chapter the frequently repeated "one by one", I felt gently reminded that that is how I am to serve - ONE BY ONE! Nothing is done in groups or even pairs but one by one. I loved the reminders, the scriptural references and the stories. The insight shared was eye-opening in some situations and refreshing. I could have used a few more chapters. The book was a little short.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to review this important work that will be part of our library.

Very insightful. I look forward to rereading this.

I was given a complimentary ebook copy of One by One to review.

One by One is a well-written and easy-to-follow discourse on how Jesus Christ, in His interactions with people, ministers to individuals. Reading this, it becomes quite clear how incredibly personal the Atonement of Jesus Christ is … yes, He did atone for all humankind, but also for me (or you) personally.

David A. Bednar uses examples from the standard works (The Holy Bible, The Book, of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price), interspersed with modern revelations from General Conference talks, to clearly illustrate how Jesus Christ ministered to individuals -- to the one or ones -- even as he ministered to collective groups … and how we, as disciples of Christ, can emulate His example in how we interact with those around us.

I found this book to be enlightening and extremely applicable to my current calling as a Sunday School teacher. As I read, I found myself becoming excited to explore opportunities to pray for my students and to discover opportunities to personally let my students know how much they are loved and valued. I also loved learning about Sister Bednar’s habit of praying to be made aware of these opportunities for those people in her life -- and how she acts on those promptings. I would love to be able to enjoy those opportunities to serve those in my life, as well.

As I read this book, I found myself drawing lots of parallels between what I was reading and what I’ve been learning in the Teacher Correlation meetings, where we discuss how to apply the material in the Teaching in the Savior’s Way manual in our interactions with our classes.

I highly recommend this book for anyone called as a teacher or for anyone who is looking for opportunities to and methods for developing stronger and more sincere relationships with those in his or her stewardship (family, friends, acquaintances, those whom you Home or Visit Teach, etc.).

Good read!

As a person, who doesn't usually read doctrinal-type books, I decided to give this book a chance because of the title. It didn't disappoint! I really liked the concept of how the savior ministered one by one and so should we. Too many times we get caught up in callings, meetings, etc. and do forget about the personal relationship-building aspect. This book served as a good reminder. Sometimes the book seemed a bit redundant, but overall it was a good read.

Thought provoking

I enjoyed reading this book. There were many poignant quotes that opened my eyes to how my Heavenly Father sees me. I admit that at times the book seemed redundant. I struggled with the writing pattern. But the message is definitely inspired and I felt the Spirit while I read it testifying to me that the concept of "one by one" is true and that God is in the small details of our lives.

As one who can easily see how the Lord reaches out to bless others in a multitude of ways “one by one,” yet never felt such happening in my own life, Elder Bednar’s book helped to open my eyes to the reality of the tender mercies being poured out upon me.

Elder Bednar builds the case that “in the work of the Lord there is no such thing as a coincidence, because the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.” Reading the scriptural accounts from the New Testament and the Book of Mormon, in addition to the personal experiences of many in our own day, I felt increased faith and hope, and began to see more clearly my own worth in the sight of God.

“This simple pattern of one by one influences everything I do, every day of my life and every place I go" says Elder Bednar. This book helped me desire to more fully understand and incorporate the Savior’s pattern more fully in my own life. I highly recommend this book.

What an insightful book! Elder Bednar does a wonderful job of showing us how the Savior in His ministry didn't
focus on the multitude but always on the one. The personal stories that he shared also show how
in our lives today we need to learn to recognize the one and how to serve that person. It reminded me that
the Savior is very much aware of all of us individually and we are never alone. I am definitely more alert to
Individuals around me and recognize that in Heavenly Fathers work there are no coincidences.
