Colonial Massachusetts, 1775

Abigail Stowell is a rarity for her time. The comely young woman is educated, outspoken, and attuned to the charged political climate around her. She is a staunch Patriot. In short, she is a rebel. So when Gideon Whitlock, and avowed Tory, rides into her village, Abby is not only put off by his politics and arrogance but is also annoyed by her undeniable attraction to him.

When she observes a clandestine meeting between her Patriot father and Gideon, Abby soon realizes that in a world divided by loyalties, not everything is as it seems. Soon she is drawn deeper into political intrigue than she ever dreamed possible. And just as feelings begin to heat up between Abby and Gideon, the shot heard round the world ignites the beginning of war between the colonists and the British redcoats. There is no time for hesitation, and Abby finds herself thrust into a world of intrigue, treachery, and terror. Lives hang in the balance, and Abby will stop at nothing to support the Patriot movement—but will her allegiance to the cause mean losing the man she loves?

Whenever I read a good book set in Colonial times it makes me feel patriotic and humbled by the men and women who lived during such a turbulent and important era, participating in the formation of our country and fighting for liberty. Petticoat Spy has a strong heroine who is passionate for the cause, and learning to balance speaking out for her convictions with maintaining a ladylike demeanor and schooling her mind to bring honor to her family name. Although Abby has an impetuous nature, she is intelligent and grows throughout the story from her experiences. I liked Gideon from the start and how he admires Abby even when she is at odds with him. There is a suspenseful tension as the danger increases, yet the author weaves in a sweet romance between the two patriots, however inopportune the circumstances. I really loved the historical details that enhanced the setting and gave me a feeling of being there with the characters. Highly recommend to fans of historical fiction and those who enjoyed the books of Amber Lynn Perry and Ann Rinaldi!

Great Historical Fiction!

I've been reading a lot of regency novels lately and this book was a refreshing change in scenery. I love books set during important times in history and this one takes place just before the Revolutionary War in America. The Patriot movement is increasing and strengthening and Abigail Stowell finds herself right in the middle of it.

Abby is a strong and determined girl. She has a keen mind and desperately wants to be a part of the cause she so strongly believes in. This leads her to a few impossibly difficult situations but with the help of good friends she manages to get through.

The story flowed so well. It gave me a chance to know all the characters, their strengths and weaknesses but kept events happening and momentum building so that I never grew bored or disinterested. With every turn of the page I felt my anxiety increasing because I just knew something bad was going to happen but I didn't know when and I didn't know how Abigail and Gideon could possibly get out of the mess they were in. I desperately wanted to know and to get to the end for my own resolution. It is always so good to be compelled to read on and not want to put a book down. :)

If you love historical fiction, you don't want to miss out on this book!

Content: Some mild violence, drugging, abuse. A few instances of kissing. Clean.

A riveting read!

PETTICOAT SPY may look like an unsuspecting sweet romance with some minor spying, but the story is so much more. Full of danger, deception, and a fight for the characters' very lives makes for a riveting tale. Then also add in a little whimsy with a wise woman who receives warnings and some predictions, a quaint town, a loving family, a world in turmoil on the brink of war, and a dashing gentleman to charm the heroine's heart. Historical romance and suspense readers are sure to enjoy!

I fell in love with these characters almost immediately. Abigail or "Abby" was such a spitfire. I loved her passion, but also her intellect and wit. I also couldn't help but love the sparks that flew between Gideon and her. The author did a wonderful job of conveying plenty of tension and chemistry. I also appreciated that Abby grew more into herself, that she learned from some prior mistakes. There were a slue of other characters that came alive in this story as well, including a very cunning villain.

The story kept a fairly constant underlying feel of suspense that gradually grew until I literally was holding my breath waiting to see if these characters would make it out alive in the end. The plot may not have been completely realistic all the time, but was definitely plausible. There weren't any places where I felt things were too easy or where characters didn't react consistently. The romance also didn't overtake the story. There were other aspects at play and all the pieces worked well together. It was definitely an engaging story from beginning to end.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Yes. This was actually more than I was expecting and a great combination of romance, humor, and suspense.

Content: Some violence.

This is a great book! I loved it from the very beginning.

I really loved Abigail, I loved the way she was willing to step up in a time that women were pretty much expected to sit in the corner quietly and work on their sewing. She had opinions, strong ones, and she was willing to express them and even get into trouble for them when she acted on them. I also loved that she was willing to apologize when she needed to. And I loved the way she went out of her way to care for her invalid "aunt," and put herself into danger at the same time, because she believed that it was the right thing to do.

Abby's is the only point of view you see in the book, and she has a great outlook on things. It would have been really fun to see what Gideon's thoughts were, especially when she believed that he was a Tory and against everything she believed in herself. I did love the lengths that he went to to protect Abby in any way he could from the danger that was all around her.

I loved the plot of this one, it's full of danger, intrigue and I loved the romance aspect as well. This is a really well-done, fun book!

Very Entertaining

I really enjoyed Petticoat Spy by Carol Warburton. The Colonial Period isn't one that I've read many novels from, but it was very interesting watching the events unfold as the Patriots built their cause to fight for their freedom from England.

Warburton wrote some excellent characters. Abby is my favorite type of character (one who doesn't fit the mold). Although extremely dangerous, her courage to join the cause and to hide in plain site (who would expect a woman of being a spy?) was admirable. A few times I worried that she was taking too many chances that might cause more harm than good, but it all worked out in the end. Her dedication to Caroline was also heartwarming as she saw a need (much greater than she expected before she arrived) and she put a lot of focus into helping her.

I also really enjoyed Gideon and the other characters, like Prudence Blood. This was a very entertaining story, and one that I can see myself reading again.

If you enjoy historical fiction, give Petticoat Spy a try.

Great Historical Fiction

4.5 stars

This book is easy to get lost into. I fell in love with the characters and the plot was intriguing!

The book begins just before the US Revolutionary War. The main character is Abigail Stowell. She is the daughter of a revolutionist. I loved reading the historic events through the eyes of someone who was experiencing them. I realize she is a fictional character, but it had an authentic feel to it.

Abigail is willingly brought into a world of becoming a spy and passing information to someone who is considered to be a Tory, but really working for the Patriots. She has passion for reform and wants to be of help. She is a strong women during a time when women were not supposed to be strong. I loved her enthusiasm, intellect, and courage.

The love interest is dangerous. They develop feeling for each other when it is not safe or prudent. War is on the horizon and the time for romance is fleeting. I liked the sparks between them.

In short, if you enjoy historical fiction with action and romance, you may want to pick up this book. It is written well and runs at a great pace.

This Revolutionary War era fictional tale tells the story of Abigail, who wants more than anything to help the patriots like her father with the war effort. When she meets Gideon Whitlock, she is revolted by the arrogant Tory. But things aren’t always as they seem, and as she moves to Boston to help her dear friend, Aunt Caroline, she discovers dangerous truths that will put her life, and those she loves, at risk. This was an awesome book! I loved Abby’s courage and need for adventure. She does daring things that are both stupid and bravely honorable. The villain is well-done—extremely icky and vile—and the side characters add dimension that make it a thoroughly enjoyable ride. The way the author wove the history into the story was pieced together so flawlessly that I felt as if I was there and participating…and it was both thrilling and frightening. I love learning about history through well-written and researched novels like this. Two thumbs up and a huge grin for this story.
