This is another suspense from Poulson who does such a nice job with his law enforcement stories. This one revolves around a detective agency called Short Investigations because of the lack of height in the owner (less than 5-feet-tall). Rhett Ketchum is called home from his rodeo tour when the dead body of a former girlfriend is found in his barn and he's reported as the murderer. Taking the advice of his attorney, he hires Short Investigations to help prove his innocence. With a rival working as a deputy determined to see him arrested for the crime, Rhett is understandably nervous. What he doesn't expect is to be caught between his attraction to Patches Fisher, one of the 'short' investigators, and Detective Kori Davis. But when attempts are made on their lives, it becomes clear that romance has to take a back seat until the the perpetrator is caught. As always, Poulson's law enforcement details are spot on and interesting. The twists and turns that the case takes makes for entertaining mystery. The inclusion of an old cold case involving the investigators from Short Investigations makes for an interesting side story.

This was a good suspense novel. There wasn't anything that was too intense, but it kept me on my toes, trying to figure out who did it. It was easy to like both Rhett, Max, and Patches, and there wasn't too much romance involved. Sometimes I get annoyed with the romancey side of things in the middle of a suspense novel, but things were just right in this one. There were some predicatable twists and some not so predicatable. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good suspense with some romance in it.

Great Murder Mystery!

I've been reading Clair Poulson books for a long time now so I know exactly what I'm going to get when I pick up one of his books. I'm sure my reviews all sound about the same but that says something about his consistency.

One thing I know going into Clair Poulson books is that the characters aren't going to overwhelm me with personality. I won't fall in love with them. Any type of romantic starts to a relationship are going to be hard for me to feel. These books are more plot driven than character driven. But I always know this going in so it's all good.

This was a great murder mystery. Actually, it started out with one mystery and ended with three! There were so many things swirling around in this story which had me interested from beginning to end. The list of suspects grew and I was right there, suspecting them all! This is the consistent part I was talking about before. Clair Poulson knows how to write up a good, interesting mystery. I actually think this one might be one of my favorites.

Content: some violence, death (described in some detail), peril.

Great suspense book filled with amazing characters!

If you’re searching for a great suspense novel, look no further than Clair Poulson’s books! I love the way he writes. His books are full of suspense. You’re going to be sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time you’re reading. I love his characters, and he even throws a speck of romance in if you like that!

I liked the way this one was written. The Prologue is a scene that doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the book. Until you read for a little while, then it makes sense.

This book is written from the perspectives of Rhett and Patches. I loved the way the author does that. In this one, neither of these two main characters knows who the person is, and that way the reader doesn’t either. It’s up to the reader to figure it out and the characters beat me this time. I had no idea who had done it all. I always feel like the author has done the best job if I don’t know who the killer was!

Rhett is the man accused of doing the killing in this one. The reader does know it wasn’t him. You can tell just by how he is that he would never kill anyone, let alone the murdered. I liked his character. He is a rodeo cowboy, and he’s always going out of his way to help everyone around him. His mom, Patches and Kori are just a few of the people he helps in this one.

Patches is also a fun character. She and her father run a PI firm called Short Investigations. I loved how smart she was! She’s the kind of person who can figure out any problem. She’s also kind. I loved the way she was able to defend herself when she needed to, and there were several times that she needed to.

Short Investigations is one of my favorites of this author! I never can pick favorites, they’re all great! Pick this one up when you get a chance!
