In a Church that is focused on family, singles can feel somewhat discounted and discouraged. Oftentimes the very resources meant to support people can inadvertently cause pain. In the book A Single Voice, author Kristen Oaks addresses questions such as:
A Single Voice addresses these concerns and offers valuable insights, personal reflections (including the story of the author's courtship and marriage to Elder Oaks), and rich advice for living life to the fullest as a single member.
Kristen has hit all the key questions about being single. Finding hope in trails that I have experienced. She is an amazing lady and I would like to thank her for writing this book! Highly recommend reading it.
I've never read any talks given by Sister Oaks before so I was unsure how this book would go, but oh my goodness, it is fantastic!
Sister Oaks is truly an example of what a strong LDS woman should be. Whether they are single, married, or a widow. She is incredibly down to earth.
How often have we as singles, heard someone say "Just keep being strong! Heavenly Father has someone for you!" and you just want to scream!?!? Exactly! She writes saying yes, she too wanted to scream! It's hard to always keep a positive attitude when you're dealing with a church that revolves around families and you're alone. Yet she does a wonderful job at saying, yes. It does hurt, but we all must move forward; this is how I survived.
Overall, this is a great book. I wish I could see her give a public speech or a talk sometime during GC!
This is one of the best books I have EVER read on the struggles and heartache that single women of the church feel. She hits every emotion that you can go through. SHE GETS IT! SHE WAS THERE! This book should be read by every woman, young and old alike! Completely amazing! I loved every minute and felt empowered when I was finished reading it!
I love the tone of practicality and spirituality. You have done a terrific job! I definitely am going to purchase copies for some of my friends. You tackle some very sensitive Mormon issues head on and do it very well. Congratulations on a well written and researched book.
I have not read this book yet, however I was in Kristen's ward 10 years ago. She was a phenomenal Gospel Doctrine teacher and we were sad to leave. She was always greatly prepared and the lessons were so interesting. She is also a great lady. I would strongly recommend her book. :)
Prior to reading this book I had been feeling depressed, frustrated, sad, and lonely because I remain single in my early 30's. There were times when I felt like the Lord had forgotten me. Often, I searched through the experiences of my life to determine where I had gone wrong because that seemed to be the only explanation for my singleness.
Sister Oaks' insights helped me change my perspective about my life and my experiences. I received a renwal of hope, comfort, and strength to press forward in the trials of my life, whatever they may be. She reminded me that I have the choice to be happy in all situations of my life and that as I rely upon the Lord, I will more fully understand his will for me.
Sister Oaks was truly inspired to write this book. It has helped me so much to look forward with faith and hope in my future, single or married. It's a very positive message, to make a life for oneself right now and live happily. While I and many others can relate to her feelings while being single, I've learned so much from her experiences and lessons SHE has learned along the way. I'm grateful she has shared them in this excellent book. It's very powerful and motivating.
Sister Oaks does an amazing job of sharing her "single years" experiences. I appreciate her uplifting advice that will help me face my single years in a more optimistic manner.
Kristen Oaks' book, A Single Voice, is heart warming, interesting,
timely, and well written.
It cuts to the core of how women ( and men) feel. Kristen Oaks' life
is her message. She has lived what she writes about and is able to
describe how we can all make life full and satisfying, no matter what
our circumstances. This book would be helpful to both the married and
single, as it teaches truths about living life to the fullest, staying
close to the Lord and remembering His promises to us, finding
happiness in what we have. Thank you for such an inspiring book and
A Single Voice is a priceless treasure, no matter what stage of life you are. I was moved to joy and tears--tears of thankfulness for the insights Sister Oaks shares--with love and understanding. This is a book about hope--not to get married, but hope to be the best that I can be --single or married. Good job, Sister Oaks
