Fantastic writing! I love how we hear the view of the different characters. The pettiness and arguments between certain characters become a bit annoying, it drags on just like the journey does. But it gives a hint of betrayal to come.
There is only a touch of dark and light magic which I guess the author will elaborate on in later novels. I look forward to listening to the next book.
Just finished the second book and I find myself reflecting on the characters and their moral choices. I couldn’t put either book down. The plot is well constructed and moves quickly. The characters are all flawed, yet lovable. Great story. Now just waiting for third and final volumn. ..
Enjoyed this book! Well written and engaging story.,
If you are looking for a great adventure series, THIS IS IT! A Tale of Light and Shadow will not disappoint! It's an exciting story that draws you in from the beginning and will keep you reading! I could not put this book down! Love the story, love the characters, this series is sure to be enjoyed by teens and young adults everywhere.
This book has a little bit of everything: Romance, Adventure, Action, Mystery, Magic... I can tell that it is well thought out. Jacob Gowans does a wonderful job at laying the foundations while keeping the story moving. There are plots within plots. It is intriguing how it all works and flows together.
I was pulled into the world of Atolas from the beginning. Henry and Isabelle have a strong love for each other. Unfortunately, her father will do anything to tear them apart, including selling her to be a concubine to an Emperor. They pass through many trials that test the strength of their bond and prove who are their friends.
The book ends on a cliffhanger. I am so grateful that I have the second Secrets of Neverak already in my possession. This is a book that you need to find out if there will be a happy ever after. I liked the characters, particularly Isabelle, Maggie, and Henry. Ruther, James. and Brandol all have secrets that make them a little less lovable, but it will be great to find out what it is to drive them to their thoughts and actions.
This is a great book with a little bit of kissing and violence.
I was hooked on this book from the beginning! Henry and Isabelle are in love but there are forces in play to keep them apart, starting with Isabelle's father. When the Emperor turns his attention to Isabelle, protecting her becomes Henry's focus, so they take off to find safety in another land. Henry and Isabelle are joined by some great characters: Henry's sister, Maggie, Isabelle's brother, James, Henry's childhood friend, Ruther, and Henry's apprentice, Brandol (Henry is a carpenter). I loved their interactions with each other and learning more about the history between some of the characters.
There's love, friendship, betrayal, heartache, adventure and more! The fantasy portion is pretty light so if you don't generally enjoy fantasy, this is a book you'll want to try. It's mainly a story of friendship and love and has lots of character interactions. Once the adventure portion starts, it doesn't let up until the very end, at which point I was glad that I had the second book available to start reading right away! There's so much more that I could say but this is a book you need to read to experience it yourself!
I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.
A Tale of Light and Shadow allows the reader to become familiar with its characters, their background, and plight before jumping into a crazy and dangerous journey. With distinct characters, an engaging plot, a fantasy world where not all or who are as they seem, it was a story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I liked these characters. They each had different roles and played them well. I liked Maggie, James, and Henry the most, but also, somewhat begrudgingly, Ruther. They each had their own merits and some of them grew on me as the story progressed. I also had this hope that they would all do as they should and make it to their intended destination without being captured or losing their lives.
I have to also give notice to some other characters who were so very well drawn. The Emperor Krallick from neighboring Neverak was a cunning, manipulative, and strong adversary. Then there was the King of Blithmore who was somewhat deceiving in appearing less than he was, but a good king. General Attikus was another strong character and one that I feel will play an important role as the series progresses. He will have to decide what he is willing to do for a corrupt monarch.
Then there is the mystery of magic that I know some of the characters possess, but hide. There are a few trinkets that also play some sort of role that I'm unsure of. They are just hinted to in the story as the characters flee for their lives versus a very determined opposition. The pace is steadily intense from about a third of the book on and ends leading nicely into the second book.
The only drawbacks I had were that the characters acted younger and less confident in some parts than I thought they would and that some things didn't quite make sense to me realistically. I also didn't like a couple of the characters at some points. These were relatively of small concern though, as the story picked up and developed in places. By the end I was entranced with the story and happy that I had the second book just waiting for me to pick up.
I would recommend A Tale of Light and Shadow to fantasy readers, both YA, NA, and adult. It is the beginning to a promising series and one that will only get deeper and more dangerous as it carries on.
Source: I would like to thank Shadow Mountain for my complimentary copy, which did not affect my review in any way.
Intriguing beginning! I SO LOVED IT!
A storyteller comes in and has an audience waiting for him to spin a fantastic tale.
The next chapter starts as if you are in the audience listening to his tale of a young man and a young woman who are in love and are trying to figure out how to convince the father to give his blessing for marriage.
The father is conniving and has a different plan--
In the process the girl gets poisoned, they go on the run and a small band of friends end up traveling together.
The storyteller is with this group of friends and all the while he keeps thinking-- this will make great material for my stories-- whether it is an adventure or a mishap.
A fun book!
Adventures, deceptions, anecdotes, romance, and friendships await :)
Be sure to grab a copy for yourself!
I enjoyed reading A Tale of Light and Shadow. I was expecting more of the fantasy angle to the story. It hints at it. The dark prophecy I might have missed it if it was mentioned besides the back cover. Their is more to the story than this first book. It is easy to follow and want more of these characters in the future.
They are all on a run to escape with their lives most of the book. The journey that they are not very prepared for. I was disappointed when the book ended. I wanted more of it. I hope the next book comes soon.
I got lost in the story. I liked Jacob Gowan's writing style.
I was given a copy of A Tale of Light and Shadow to read so I could give a honest review of it and join it's blog tour.
This book had me hooked from the very beginning. I loved how it began with a simple scribe coming to hear a story teller and write down what he says. When the story teller begins his tale I was entranced. It was as if I had been transported to the world of Atolas and personally knew Isabelle and Henry. I loved every minute of reading this book, it's full of action, adventure, love, friendship and betrayal. I loved the characters, they're very well written. I was truly sad when this amazing book ended. I can't wait to read the next story about Isabelle and Henry, I hope it comes soon!
