Tennis Shoes Adventure Series: Vol. 11: Sorcerers And Seers by Chris Heimerdinger

Well, it's about time we get to read more about the adventures of Jim Hawkins, his sister Jenny and Garth Plimpton, plus all their children and the Book of Mormon and New Testament characters we've come to love. The first time I heard Chris was close to finishing this Volume was last year and the deadline came and went, so we found out it was being released early Sep of this year. Well, the wait was well worth it, but Chris, please not keep us in suspense another five years!!!!

For those not familiar with the Tennis Shoes Adventure Series, the first Volume is entitled Tennis Shoes Among The Nephites. Jim, Garth and Jenny embark on a fascinating and terribly exciting journey into Book of Mormon and New Testament lands, winding up in Frost Cave, Wyoming that takes them on a time travel journey of mass proportions.

In this volume, we find Jim and Jenny side by side with the Mortal Messiah in Gethsemane and Golgatha, while witnessing the wrath and rejection of His followers, ones who cannot comprehend His full earthly mission to save mankind.

Joshua Plimpton, Chief Captain of the Nephites, is on a quest to destroy the vilest of villains to rescue the Golden Plates. He has both the sword of Laban and the Liahona with him. He has times of struggling with his faith, but he manages to realize whose side he is fighting for and his faith becomes strong with the aid of Hamira, one of King Omer's granddaughters. They come in contact with huge Mastadon's as they journey towards Cumorah.

We continue to savor the exploits of Appollus, our fearless andcourageous Roman Centurion, who shows Meagan just how much he loves her when she is seriously injured by a "Gadianton Ghost."

It's surprising for the group when they find how adept Huracan, the black jaguar is, who has been with the group for a long time as well as Rafa, Harry's constant companion and a Perigrine Falcon, who appears to know when things will happen to warn the group ahead of time.

Other characters we're friends with are Gidgiddonihah, who died and was brought back to life to change history, Rebecca, Josh's 10 year old sister, who was also born in Book of Mormon days, Marcos,a former Gadianton Robber, Mahonri Moriancumr, the brother of Jared, Pagag, son of Mahonri Moriancomr and Ryan Champion, former boyfriend of Meagan. And,then we have Steffani, Jim's daughter and the most athletic of the Hawkins children and constant companion to Pagag.

If you love time travel as I do, you'll love this series and if you want to know more about The Book of Mormon and its characters, you'll love this series and book. Also, for those who have listvened to tvhe book on CD, you miss out on the Chapter notes at the end of each chapter. I very highly recommend this next installment, but hope to see it come to a huge climax soon, especially since one main character has ended up back home in Utah where he started out from.

I bought my autogaphed copy from Chris.

Better and better

Those who are avid fans of Chris Heimerdinger will commiserate with me in the agony that has been the last five years. One began to wonder if we would ever find out how the story would go on. And now that the wait is over, I can say, with complete assuredness, that the wait was definitely worth it. Every second. But please, please, Mr. Heimerdinger, don’t make us wait that long ever again.

Though all the Tennis Shoes books are one continuous story, the “beginning” of this particular part of the story actually started in Book 8. And I’m simultaneously sorry and happy to say that it doesn’t end in Book 11. When we left our dear friends, they were separated into three groups, but everyone was relatively safe and well. Of course, it’s not long before they are all in mortal peril once again. This book is a rollercoaster of action and emotion. And along the way, we meet new characters, some of whom we immediately love. I loved this book. As I say to anyone to whom I am recommending these books, “They just get better and better.” And that’s not to diminish the worth of the earlier books. It’s just that there always seems to be something new and unexpected and completely amazing around every corner.

Something that, I feel, truly sets these books apart is the absolute sincerity of the Spirituality and Emotion. You will not find patronizing words or blanket statements in these pages. The spiritual journeys of the characters are so real, you feel as if it could be your own. I cannot count all the moments when the words would blur through the tears in my eyes.

I am continually in awe of the genius, imagination, organization and inspiration that is Chris Heimerdinger. But I don’t pause long to question it. I can only be grateful that he has chosen to share it all with the world.

Great book full of wonderful cliffhangers that left me on the edge of my seat. Only problem I had was the chapters where Jim and Jenny were in control. The way their events were portrayed did not sit well with me. And in a lot of ways was rather boring for the events they were witnessing. Can't wait for the next one and hope it doesn't take as long as this one did to be released.

Your favorite characters fight for life, working against the powers of darkness.

The Tennis Shoes Adventure Series begins when a group of teens go spelunking in Frost Cave, and after falling into an underground river they find themselves in the land of the Nephites. The series progresses to chronicle the adventures of them and their families’ as they explore the times of Christ, and other characters of the scriptures. In Volume 11: Sorcerers and Seers, the adventures of the whole Hawkins and Plimpton families are lost in time. This book is packed with close calls and chilling revelations as the families try to find their way through time and space to be together once more.
This series has been a long time reading project of mine, and I was excited to have this installment come out, especially since I have been waiting five years for it. For having so much hype about it, I felt Sorcerers and Seers was a letdown. For being left on such a big cliffhanger in the last book, I felt that this one should have had some more action. I also feel that some of the more key points should have been described better, like in the other books. It came off as slow, with quick and somewhat confusing action scenes, and there wasn’t as much detail or emotion. Some of the formerly more dynamic characters fell flat.
At the same time, it was satisfying to make some progress forward. The developing relationship between Josh Plimpton and Hamira was interesting, however rushed, and the largest group of lost travelers finally made it to their destination, but not without casualties. I loved the humor added through the confusing “speech” of Rafa, a Peregrine falcon from the times of the Jaredites, who seems to have a knack for spotting danger. I also enjoyed the insightful ideas the author had concerning the operation of the Liahona. The book ended on a major cliffhanger, with two of the more prominent characters suddenly and mysteriously arriving back home. I was left eager to see what would happen next.
Overall, I would recommend Sorcerers and Seers to any lover of the Tennis Shoes series. The new developments and surprises will capture your attention, holding it until the final page is turned. You’ll be amazed at seeing how the destinies of all the characters are intertwined as the series heads for its final climax.
