Tennis Shoes Adventure Series, Vol. 2: Gadiantons and the Silver Sword
They came from the past to retrieve something stolen, something evil. . .and only Jim Hawkins stands in their way.
Chris Heimerdinger, LDS master of high adventure, reunites the compelling characters from his best-selling novel, Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites, in an explosive saga that transports you from the familiar settings of Utah and the American West to the deep and shadowy jungles of southern Mexico.
Jim Hawkins, still unable to remember his former adventures among the Nephites, is nevertheless haunted by fleeting images he can't seem to connect with any particular source. Vivid memories are returned to him bit by bit when strange and ancient visitors suddenly interrupt his life — one desperate for his help, others desparate for revenge.
Join Jim Hawkins, Jennifer Hawkins, and Garth Plimpton as they embark upon the most thrilling and hazardous quest of their lives: one that teaches them the true meaning of valiance in these latter days and where every step of the way they are pursued by the darkest of villains. . .

Just last week I finished reading the second book in the Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites series called Gadiantons and the Silver Sword by Chris Heimerdinger. This time Jim Hawkins is a little older. He is attending BYU, and sadly his memories of his first adventure are now gone. But that doesn’t stop the evil Gadianton Robbers from coming to the latter days to seek revenge on him.
After running into Muleki, a Jershonite who has come to help, the gang is reunited with Garth, his old comrade, and his loveable sister, Jenny, along with Renea, Jim’s new sweetheart. Together they will have to fight against the evil power of the cursed silver sword of Coriantumr before it ends up in the wrong hands. The only way to get rid of the curse is to bury it in the coffer of the old prophet Ether with all the other swords.
Heimerdinger does a great job at creating a plot that makes the Book of Mormon come to life and connects the modern world with the ancient one. In his well-written plot that pulls you in, many times I found myself not wanting to stop between chapters. He also includes the Gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a way that relates to the reader. One of my favorite quotes can be found on page 159:
“You know,” I began, “when I was a little kid, I thought everything was entirely black and white. I remember being so hurt, so disappointed, when I realized everything was grey. As I’ve grown older, it seems I’ve been just as disappointed, and struggled just as hard against the awareness that everything is really as black and white as I always thought it was.” “You’re right,” Garth agreed. “There are only two forces at work in this world –black and white. Only people are grey.”
I like this conversation between Jim and Garth because there is truth in his idea. I have seen in my own life this struggle; when the everyday choices we make are so easily justified to grey it is hard to see them as just black and white.

It is so fun reading about the characters. They provide great humor to the story, and it's great to see the different things that they learn as the story develops. Very good.
