Understanding Temple Symbols Through Scripture, History, and Art
by Jack M. Lyon
Would you like to gain more from your temple attendance? More knowledge and power? More help for your daily life? Understanding Temple Symbols helps us think about the temple in new and different ways—discovering unexplored avenues of learning, opening doors we hadn't noticed before, and deepening our understanding of the symbolism used in the Lord's House.
Our temple experience is rooted in symbols, and to understand those symbols is to receive more fully the endowment of knowledge the Lord desires to give us. Author Jack M. Lyon provides guidance as we learn to recognize how temple symbols answer such questions as the following:
- What is the meaning of covenants and offerings?
- How did God create the world, and what can we learn from his methods?
- What is the tree of life?
- What was the forbidden fruit?
- What is our condition in the lone and dreary world?
- Who are the Lord's messengers, and how can we know them?
- How does the temple teach and testify of the Savior and what he has done for us?
Whether you have just begun attending the temple or are well seasoned in temple worship, Understanding Temple Symbols offers intriguing new insights about the House of the Lord, making connections between the temple and the scriptures for all who seek further light and knowledge.

My one complaint with this book was that the eBook images were not high resolution. I received an email from support that the eBook team has updated the images to a higher resolution. The images do look much better now. Very impressed with customer service. And of course the book itself is fantastic, as you'll gather from the other reviews.

I cannot say enough good things about this book! I am a convert of nearly 41 years. Living in the East, going to the Temple on a weekly basis is not currently possible. But over the years, I have tried my best to understand the symbolism presented in the Temple as I attended. I have learned some things on my own, but this book opened up a whole new world to me. I could not put it down. The ordinances of the Temple flowed through my mind as I read each chapter and gleaned new insights that I had never been able to gain until now. If you find yourself struggling with symbolism, this book will do more to clarify these truths than you might imagine. It is a book that I will read again and again. And although e-books have their place, I truly believe having the hardback with its artwork in this case is well worth the price difference.

I agree with other reviewers on content–this book is wonderful. However, the images in the ebook version are NOT high resolution. May not seem like a big deal at first, but I'll tell you, studying and enjoying the images is a lot harder when they are blurry and pixelated. Spend the money and get the hardcover over the ebook.

I just finished this beautiful book. I was immediately impressed with the images and illustrations in it. Some I recognized and others were new and amazing! The text is quite easy to read; I never felt like I was "plowing through" jargon. But the content was not superficial in the least. The tone is that of a teacher who loves his subject. The research is revealing and supportive to each section; everything is backed by the scriptures, General Authorities, and other, sometimes ancient, sources. It was an enjoyable read from beginning to end. I think I will start it again!

I originally bought a different book to help be better understand the Temple. I was not learning what I hoped for. Hesitant to spend more money, I downloaded this ebook. I am only on page 33 and I have learned so much already. I'm now going to buy the hardcover for me and two of my friends who will be attending the Temple soon. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone that is seriously seeking to increase not only their understanding about the Temple but a greater understanding of the progression of our journey here in this life.

This beautiful and impressive book will deepen your understanding and increase your love for the temple. In clear, thoughtful, and respectful language, author Jack M. Lyon gives helpful keys to unlocking the symbols found in the Lord's house. In the process, he shows how the teachings of the temple encompass the entire plan of salvation--and motivate us to the best of gospel living. Highly recommended!

A very easy read, filled with, as the title suggests, an abundance of scripture, historical references and art works. The author consistently stops short of over-explanation, thus maintaining space for personal insight and revelation—many authors would have written a volume three times the size, with no additional content (or value). My first temple visit after reading this book was the most inspiring and uplifting experience I have had in the House of the Lord for many years. I'm looking forward to reading this again.

I loved reading this book. Not only did it answer some questions I have wondered about but it gave me the background information I needed to help me come to my own conclusions to some issues I have wondered about. The information in this book has also helped me understand the scriptures better when I am doing my own private scripture study. I have always marched to a different drummer and now I have of better understanding of why that may be. I think it is the kind of book that needs to be read more than once in order to absorb all of the information and insight within it's covers. I would recommend it to everyone but especially to someone wanting to increase their knowledge base. Read and enjoy....

What a beautiful book! I love just looking at the incredible art on nearly every page. Not just a list of symbols and their meanings, instead it is like a smorgasbord of stunning full-color photos of religious art throughout history combined with inspiring and insightful quotes from scriptures and prophets, both ancient and modern. These work together to illuminate each other and to guide the reader to a deeper understanding of and appreciation for symbolism in general. The accompanying text by Jack Lyon is very readable and thought provoking without being stuffy or dogmatic. Highly recommended!

This book by Jack Lyon has a nice way of tying scripture, art, poetry, history, and literature together to expand our understanding of temple symbols and meaning. It caused me to reflect on many doctrines, such as the creation, sacrifice, atonement, covenants, etc…, and it leaves me wanting to do more personal research and to look for spiritual symbols in many of the great works and masterpieces.

This is one of the most magnificent and spiritually moving books on temple worship that I have read (and I have read many!) The artwork is beautiful and breathtaking, the history pertinent and instructive and the scriptures powerful and motivating. This is a book to which I will be drawn again and again. Just opening it brings the spirit of the temple into my soul and draws me closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. It has made my temple worship more deeply and personally felt. Thank you, Jack Lyon! I've already ordered more for Christmas! There could be no more perfect gift for those that love the temple!

This book is simply amazing. So easy to read and understand and the artwork is beyond beautiful. I've learned things that I didn't know before and other things that weren't clear to me have been made more understandable. Jack Lyon has a gift of explaining things that have to do with the temple in a simple, yet meaningful way. I have plans to give this to all my family members and friends that have been through the temple. I know they'll be happy to have it.

This is a visually beautiful book full of hints and pointers toward light and knowledge. You will see more in the temple worship, the scriptures, and even much of the world’s art and literature, and take more delight in them, after spending time in these pages.

Understanding Temple Symbols is a delightful mix of history and the doctrine, doctrine as taught by the Lords prophets. I enjoyed the doctrinal insights that gave me pause to think, they were like missing puzzle pieces, that once found help complete the Gospel picture. Not a book to be read quickly, but a fine meal to be savored.
