On June 10, 2008, Carol Decker walked through the hospital doors a healthy woman with flu-like symptoms and early labor contractions. Three months later, she returned home a blind, triple-amputee struggling to bond with a daughter she would never see.
Unshattered: Overcoming Tragedy and Choosing a Beautiful Life recounts Carol's fight for survival against sepsis and its life-shattering complications. From excruciating skin grafts to learning how to function in daily life without lower legs, a left hand, and her sight, Carol takes us on a personal and raw, yet inspiring journey. She travels through the darkness of trauma, anxiety, and depression to arrive, literally, at the peak of a mountain with a heart full of gratitude and love. More than a story of triumph over tragedy, the book offers inspiring life-lessons and insights which can help readers to do more than endure unimaginable pain and darkness in their own lives. This book can give them the perspective and strength to pick up the pieces of their own tragedies and choose a life of healing, purpose, and joy—a beautiful life.

Thank you Carol Decker for sharing your journey with all of us who have read your book, "Unshattered". I truly am amazed at what you have done with your life and the challenges you have had to endure. I loved reading how you changed your attitude and your perspective about your life as a mother and wife changed also. I love your closing sentence: "I choose a beautiful life." Your book is wonderful. Thank you again for working so so so hard to change yourself into a better person. You have inspired me.
Wow, I am so impressed with everything Carol has overcame. It is not as simple as dealing with the loss of limbs and vision, she also had to do surgery after surgery, skin-grafts, and learning to do everything again with the pain and loss of limbs and vision. She also had to mourn the fact the she would never be the person she was before, the mom she was before and that everything had changed. She would need to be a new person and lead a new life. I enjoyed going on the journey with her and seeing how she used faith and courage to keep going and not give up. I really enjoyed this book a lot. I was a little surprised, although she was not always active, that she barely mentioned religion at all in the book and didnt really say anything about how the Lord helped her through her trials. She did mention that her childhood faith helped her, but I feel like the author and Carol didnt try to go too much into religion to help it sell better to many audiences, but I really wish she had acknowledged the Lord's hand a bit more and focus less on her own strength and the help from family and doctors. Although that help is all necessary and great, I feel like they were afraid to get too religious, I really would have liked to have a bit more of her experience of having the Lord help her through and how her relationship and faith had changed because of it. It is an excellent read, it is inspirational and uplifting. It is a book that changes you and makes you want to take more advantage of the life you have and do more and be better. I would recommend this book to everyone! This is such a great book about such a strong woman who overcame so much.
Occasionally I love to pick up books about real people who have endured intense hardships and persevered, overcome. It's always amazing to me how resilient the human spirit can be. Reading books like this one restores my faith in humanity. There really are so many good people out there, working hard to help other people and extending kindness in times of trouble. Mostly it helps me put life back into perspective and remember the things that are most important. I never want to take the good things and blessings in my life for granted.
Obviously, Carol Decker is a miracle. She survived something few people do. I am in awe of her persistence and how she has transformed something horrible into something beautiful. Now she shares what she has learned with others and many lives are blessed by her courage and determination. I am glad I picked this book up. I feel better for reading it and that's one of the great things about books. They fill so many different roles in life. Sometimes I read to escape and be entertained, sometimes I read to learn something new. Sometimes I read to be inspired by the triumphs of other people and I always read with the hopes of being a better person when I'm done. Mission accomplished here.

Inspiring book. Everyone experiences things that can cause them to fear and hold back. Little setbacks become stop signs. How grateful I am to recognize that I can choose to go forward despite my fears and setbacks. Carol has reminded me of that. It is a lesson I hope I never forget.
Thank you for sharing your difficult journey! My head is still trying to cope with the five years that I digested in 24 hours. Your amazing, your children will learn more than most through you. May God continue to bless you!

As I started reading Unshattered: Overcoming Tragedy and Choosing a Beautiful Life, I was amazed at the amount of things this young mother went through. She thought that she was just going to have her second baby and that life would continue to be wonderful. And then she had complications. Due to sepsis, she lost both feet, one hand and a finger, in addition to her sight. Holy cow! Reading about what she has gone through makes me so grateful for the life that I am able to live.
I enjoyed reading this book. The book is written in a way that it's really easy to read. I read the whole book in just one day. I didn't want to stop reading about Carol Decker and her sweet family.
I was inspired by so many aspects of this book. By the way the author chooses to push herself. The way she works hard to reach goals that seem as though they would be impossible to ever reach. And the way she has been able to move on, not getting angry at those around her for what happened to her.
I love this inspiring book! Make sure to take time to read Carol Decker's story. And take time to realize that your life too is beautiful and you can choose to see it that way.
An amazing story. My heart ached for Carol. I doubt I could ever have overcome the tragic events she faced in her medical extremis. The details of her suffering are the stuff of nightmares. At first, she was almost an unwilling participant in her own recovery, being dragged kicking and screaming metaphorically, to get on with the monumental rehabilitation she faced. Her family and medical rehab team wasn’t going to let her give up. She had to overcome her own mindset and heart before she could make the amazing progress she did. What an inspiration. Blessings to her and her family.
I could not put the book down and read this book cover to cover in one day. What an incredible journey of an equally incredible person. I can not even imagine such hardships. This will inspire me every day to live my best life.
I loved this book! I’m going through hard times and it just what I needed to press forward in faith.
